Last Thursday, Rhonda White and Gary Strunk were honored with Birthday greetings during the month of May. Moe Johnson also had a birthday during May, but he was unable to be at the meeting. Congratulations Rhonda & Gary, and Moe.
Work Day was a bit disappointing last Tuesday, May 10th, and we only had three show up, Gary Strunk, Randy Cook & Del Brown. They cut quite a few tree branches and hauled them to one side of the Park inside road. They worked till about 11:15am, it was pretty hot, but perhaps next month we will have a few more, The park is really looking pretty good considering what it went through almost a year ago. Can you believe that! Thanks Gary for your wonderful leadership as Manager of the Park.
Builder's Club Receives Support Check
Randy Cook & Del Brown presented an annual support check last Thursday, May 19th, to Chad Burns, teacher at Miller Middle School and faculty sponsor of their Kiwanis Builder's Club. Last year the Builder's Club with almost 25 Middle School students under the leadership of Chad and other faculty members, started a rather large garden project, including a rain barrel creation as their contribution to our Kiwanis organization. We are in a new year now and Chad is again formulating projects at the school, to include continuing with the garden project. We are very proud of the work that Chad has done and will continue to do throughout this new year. Thanks Chad for your loyal support and those in Miller who are supporting you.

Program for this coming Thursday, December 15.
Our program this coming Thursday will be brought by Gary Nelson, and will consist of several individuals from CTMC Home Health & Hospice. There are many new approaches that our hospital would like to share with us, and this will be a great time for them to do it. We have a tremendous hospital that we can all be proud of. Please let's have a great turnout for a wonderful power point presentation by the hospital.
Hey Club Members!!!! Remember these pictures from last year? Yep! This was the Terrific Kids Award Ceremony on May 20. Well.........It's that time again and we need your assistance.
The Terrific Kids from DeZavala School will be recognizing their new "T-Kids" on May 12, 2017 at 2:00pm.. It will be held as usual in the cafeteria area, and we can use anywhere from 10-12 club members to help hand our 'donated goodies' given by our city to some mighty special kids. This is where our working with kids really starts - in the elementary schools. The kids are so appreciative for pencils, pens, notebooks, coin purses, stickers, etc. This is so important! So let's gather at DeZavala at about 1:45pm, sign in at the office, and join your compadres in the cafeteria.
KIWANIS CLUB HANDS OUT SCHOLARSHIP TO SMHS SENIORS
President Moe Johnson handed out five $1,000 scholarship to five worthy seniors. As in the past, we will invite them to come to one of our meetings and speak to our club regarding their future plans and aspirations. They will be coming this coming Thursday, May 19th. The names of those who were awarded these scholarships are: Madison Gish, Hannah McComb, Sarah Mock, Nayan Patel and Joshua Scully

1.......The median age in America by the end of the 18th century was 16 years of age (today, it is around 34 years of age), 19 of every 20 citizens lived on the land, and 70% of the land was worked by its owners (30% by tenants).
2........The national government spent $4.3 million during the first session of Congress from 1789-1791. During the last year that George Washington was President of the United States (1796-1797) the entire cost of running the federal government was $5, 727,000.
3...........James Madison of Virginia was responsible for proposing the resolution to create the various Cabinet positions within the Executive Branch of our government and twelve amendments to the Constitution of which ten became the Bill of Rights.
4...........Although the United States Treasury Department stopped distributing currency denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 in 1969, for all intents and purposes the production of each stopped after World War II. , these notes are still legal tender and may be found on rare occasions in circulation. James Madison, the 'Father of the Constitution is on the $5,000 bill.

America The Beautiful.... Ketchikan, Alaska
The southernmost city in Alaska is Ketchikan, a scenic destination known for being the first stop for many cruise ships that head north along the coast. Located at the foot of Deer Mountain, Ketchikan is home to a wide range of attractions. Visitors may want to stop in at the Totem Herit5age Center, the Tongass Historical Museum or the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center. The most scenic downtown stretch is historic Creek Street, which is only a short distance away from the cruise ship docks. Once a rowdy red-light district, these days Creek Street is home to a quieter class of establishment but still retains its delightful historic charm. Ketchikan is a hub for outdoor adventures, and there is no shortage of guided day tours to do things like salmon fishing, hiking through the Tongass National Forest or ziplining through the tree canopy.
"Go West Young Man, Go West"
"Horace Greeley is usually attributed with originating the remark, 'Go west, young man, go west.' , however, Greeley did not first use this expression. His role was simply to reprint in an 1851 edition of his New York Tribune an article by John L. Soule in which Soule wrote, 'Go west, young man, and grow up with the country.'
The expression caught on with the public and, because it first appeared in Greeley's newspaper, it became popularly associated with him. Despite repeated attempts by Greeley to disclaim credit for the remark, most people still believe he originated it."
