Being a sports fan and having season tickets to Bobcat baseball I went to the Texas State vs. Texas Longhorn baseball game.  The game had a record of 3,425 fans attend.  I came away with two observations from the game.  1) Out of the 3,425 baseball fans only 4 fans wore cowboy hats. That amounts to only .001% of baseball fans wear cowboy hats.  2) Many of the youth baseball teams attend the games to experience watching a higher level of baseball.  After watching these young ball players at the game I concluded that these kids came away with 2 learning experiences.  The first is that if they go outside the grandstand they have a chance to get a foul ball baseball.  And second, they learn that going to the baseball game is where they get lots of outrageously expensive food to eat.  So much for watching baseball and learning about the game.

PROGRAM: APRIL 13th:  Moe invited Coach David Bailiff from the Texas State football staff to talk to the club.  Coach Bailiff told us about his journey through the coaching ranks and a little about his playing days at Southwest Texas State.  From New Braunfels H. S. to an assistant at SWTSU, and on to New Mexico, TCU, Texas State, Rice, and Texas A & M Commerce , and back to Texas State.  He is glad to be back to San Marcos and Texas State.   With a new pro-athletics President, a Coaches Athletic Director, and a coach that has been in national play off games it seemed like a perfect time to return.  He mentioned that he was amazed at how San Marcos and the University has grown and changed since he was here.  He knew many of our members and greeted them warmly.  It was a good welcome home Coach Bailiff program.

PROGRAM: APRIL 20th:  Beverly has invited Chase Chapman, Chief Program Director of Flyline Academy, to talk to our club.  Chase is a professional fly fisherman and is starting his Academy to teach others how to fly fish.  Casting with a fly rod is a skill all in its own.  After teaching some of the foster children after they are grown he will give them a job teaching others or hire them to work for him.  It should be a very interesting program and a good one to bring a potential member to the meeting.

PROGRAM: APRIL 27th:  Rhonda will go over final details and tasks needed for the April 29th Clay Shoot fund raiser.  Rhonda has done a wonderful job of putting this event together and getting sponsors and teams to be part of the event.  The Clay Shoot has the potential to be on the same fund raising level as our Pancake Supper we had in the past.  Club members need to step up and be there about 7:30 a.m. to get ready for the opening at 8:30 a.m.  Let Rhonda know if she can count on you.

APRIL 29th:  MAJOR FUND RAISER FOR SAN MARCOS KIWANIS CLUB;  2ND ANNUAL CLAY SHOOT AT MOYESWAY SHOOTING RANGE IN KINGSBURY.

PROGRAM: MAY 4th: Jeanne has invited Iris Tate from the Hays County Food Bank to tell us about the need to help community people with providing food.  The need for help with getting enough food for underprivilaged families is a growing concern because of the growth of this area.  The Food Bank serves an average of 100 - 200 people every day and served 290 people one day last week.  This is a very important program for many citizens in the county and is often not promoted enough.  Many of the volunteers are from those that have to do community service for a minor crime they have committed.  Anyone can volunteer and they can always use more volunteers to meet the growing need in the county.  This will be another good program to invite a potential member to attend our meeting.

PROGRAM: MAY 11th: NO MEETING BECAUSE OF TEXAS STATE GRADUATION.   If members would like to have an informal round table meet at another location now is the time to mention a place to meet and see if there is an interest.

PROGRAM: MAY 18th: Glen will have a representative from the Public Library inform us of recent up dates at the library and the start of the Summer Reading Program that our club helps sponsor.  This is a good chance for our members to volunteer to help with the registration day activities.  Chester, LuAnne and Moe volunteered last year.  Maybe sponsor a challenge game during the event for the children that sign up.

At our April 13th meeting we had Drew ??, the recruiting coordinator for Texas State football, and Renee Rainey as guests.  Both are good potential members to follow up on.

KIWANIS CLUB EVENTS:

APRIL 26TH:  Board Meeting at Rhonda's office at Med Park office at 5:00 p.m..  Any member may attend and contribute an item for the board to consider.  Only board members may vote on items.  These board meetings can be used as a make up for perfect attendance.

The Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring their annual 'Chamber Cook Out' on May 19th from 11:00 - 2:00.  Doug, Jeanne, and Moe went last year and it is a great opportunity to interact and recruit possible members for our club.  And the food is good while you visit and promote Kiwanis.  Wear a Kiwanis shirt or vest if you plan to attend.  You need to register ahead of time for this Cook Out.

A SECOND REMINDER: Let Rhonda know if you will be available for the April 29th Clay Shoot fund raiser.

THE REGULAR REMINDER: Keep clicking 'like' and sharing Kelli's posts on facebook.  This lets people know about our Kiwanis Club but a follow up invite is needed to get a potential member to attend a meeting and see what a great club we have.  Then get with the recalling your past memories of events with our Kiwanis Club to give to Jennifer for an update of our San Marcos Kiwanis Club history.  Any small or large event is welcome to add to the booklet.

NOTES AND QUOTES:

Looking over past newsletters I notice that my mind wanders off occasionally and sometimes it walks off completely.

A disturbing trend is how your cell phone has already replaced your watch, camera, calendar, and alarm clock.  Don't let it replace your family.

Old is when your friends compliment you on your new alligator shoes or boots and you are barefoot.

THE WORKING MIND OF YOUNG CHILDREN:

Sam:  "Have you ever yelled at your Dad?"
Timmy:  "Once when I was 12.
Sam: "What happened?"
Timmy: "No idea.  I was 16 when I woke up."

A 3 year old boy is sitting on the toilet.  His mother thinks he has been in there too long. So she goes in to see what's up.  Every 15 seconds or so he grips the  toilet seat with his left hand and hits himself on top of his head with his right hand.  His mother says, "Billy, are you all right?? You've been in there a long time."  Billy says, "I'm fine, Mommy.  I just haven't gone potty yet."  Mother asks him, "Billy, why are you hitting yourself on the head?"  Billy says, " It works with ketchup."

Yesterday morning after his soccer game my 6 year old asked me how come the other team gets to change the color of their jerseys every week while we always wear purple.  When I explained that, in fact, we were playing against different teams each week, his mind was blown.

My 4 year old pretended she was a hired cleaning lady yesterday.  As she helped me clean she asked if I had any kids.  After telling her about my 2, I asked her if she had any of her own.  Turns out she has 5 kids and has been married to a man named Carlin for 30 years.  You think you know someone.

BACK TO WANDERING MIND:

A question: How long does it take the average person to run a marathon?  Answer: An average person does not run marathons. (Boston Marathon on Monday)

SENIOR CITIZEN ADJUSTMENTS TO THE NEW GENERATION:

Old people in todays world:  I was visiting my daughter when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper. "This is the 21st century," she said, "We don't waste money on newspapers.  Here, use my iPad."  I can tell you this . .  that fly never knew what hit him.

The trouble with retirement is that you never get a day off.

I finally did it.  I bought a new pair of shoes with memory foam insoles.  No more forgetting why I walked into the kitchen.

My face in the mirror isn't wrinkled or drawn, my house isn't dirty and the cobwebs are gone.  My garden looks lovely and so does my lawn.  I think I might never put my glasses on again.

BACK AGAIN:

I was talking to a woman friend of mine and she tells me, "When my husband tells me 'NO', I just ask him again, because clearly he misunderstood me."

The secret of living well and longer is: eat half, walk double, laugh triple, and love without measure.

The word 'swims' upside down is still 'swims'.
