Our Club Welcomes a new member.
Sorry, this is a couple of weeks late, but our club received into membership, Lucky Bovo. He was inducted into the club on February 16th, 2017, by Membership Chair, Steve Furney and Past President, Moe Johnson.
Lucky has just gotten out of the military where he served as a helicopter pilot. He is now enrolled out at the San Marcos Airport, working on getting certified as a fixed wing aircraft pilot and will be flying with a Commercial Airline when that happens.
From the first day that Lucky visited our club, he was excited as to how he could put his talents to work in our club. He was already a big help at our latest Pancake and Silent Auction. He worked both morning and evening shift. We welcome Lucky and look forward to his being involved in many of our club's activities. We are 'lucky' to have Lucky as a member.
A Great Amount of Thanks:
When we put on a major fundraiser like our Pancake Day and Silent Auction, there are so many extra people that help with it. One such group that did not get mentioned as being of great assistance was our local chapter of the Salvation Army. We are a team when it comes to helping each other. Our club helps them by ringing bells at Christmas time, and they came over and helped us with our event. We are very grateful for their assistance. Thank you very much. One of our members, Gary Strunk does volunteer work over at the Salvation Army and he invited them to help us, and they helped quite a bit.
Our Program last week, March 2, 2017
Our program last week was brought by Kelli Whigham and she brought Luanne Caraway, the Hays County Tax Collectors. Of course this subject is of great interest to all of us, and many questions were asked, and Luanne fielded them brilliantly. Any of us who own property, or a vehicle, sooner or later is going to have to pay property taxes, or registration cost. Luanne broke each of these questions based on her excellent knowledge of the tax system.
She is an excellent County official and we are very grateful to have her. Thank you Kelli for bringing her and thank you Luanne for bringing us some very valuable information along the subject of taxes.

Randall Grizzle will be bringing Charles Johnson this coming Thursday to give a program on Zika Fever.
Zika Fever (also known as Zika virus disease and simply Zika) is an infectious disease caused by the Zika virus. Most cases have no symptons, but when present they are usually mild and can resemble 'dengue fever' Symptons may include fever, red eyes, joint pain, headache and a maculopapular rash.
Zika fever is mainly spread via the bite of mosquitoes of the 'Aedes' type/ It can also be sexually transmitted and potentially spread by blood transfusions.
The virus that causes the disease was first isolated in Africa in 1947. The first documented outbreak among people occurred in 2007 in the Federated States of Micronesia. As of January 2016, the disease was occurring in twenty regions of the Americas. It is also known to occur in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. Due to an outbreak which started in Brazil in 2015, the World Health Organization declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in February 2016.
Charles will have more information, so we don't want to miss it this Thursday. All guests are welcome to our club meeting, 12:00 noon at Grin's Restaurant.
Moe's Final 'Better Half -Marathon was a sad, but successful race!
Any event that has been going on for 30 some years, and suddenly one is faced with the heartbreaking realization that maybe it is time to give it up, it becomes a moving moment. Well that is sort of the way that Moe Johnson's Better Half Marathon went last Sunday morning. Moe has been putting on this race that long , but now feels that it ls time to turn loose of it and turn it over to someone else.
The weather before the race started, was wet, but by the time the race started , it was just misting. There were 300 plus runners, and 13 Kiwanis workers, together with Medical Explorers. Those Kiwanians that worked the whole race were: Lon Shell, Francis Mendez, Gary Nelson, Randy Cook, Frederick Case,Kelli Whigham, Steve Whigham, Beverly Crumley, Rhonda White, Pam Cook, Charles Johnson and Rob Martin.. Those who helped stuff packets on Friday was Randy Cook, Pam Cook, and Kelli Whigham.
Because this was Moe's last race, he was presented with a very special plaque at the end of the race, and it was a very moving moment not just for Moe, but for the race participants, Kiwanians and other volunteers that have been participating in this race throughout the years. Moe will be missed and he will miss this significant event.
"RAMP BUILDING UPDATES"
On Saturday, February 25th, volunteers from the Construction Student Association at Texas State built a ramp for Laura Martinez. You can see what a great ramp it was.
For the team to survey the site, build modules and cut the lumber at the warehouse, transport the material from the warehouse to the home, prepare the site for building, and then built the ramp took approximately 47 hours. Texas Ramp Project uses a formula created by Independentsector.org to estimate the value of the labor donated by our volunteers. If we had to pay fair wages to have this ramp built, it would cost approximately $1,160.00, which does not include the cost of the material, transportation, or other cost involved.
Texas Ramp Project has a warehouse in San Marcos, which allows us to purchase lumber and other material in bulk. We are able to build the modules and cut the lumber to the specific need for each ramp. This saves us time on the build site and allows us to use any left-overs on another ramp. The Burdine Johnson Foundation granted the funds to build this ramp. We estimate the cost of material for this 30 foot ramp to be approximately $960.00. We are very thankful for th8e generosity of the Burdine Johnson Foundation and their concern for the people in Hays County.
The photo to the right is from a ramp that was built by our Kiwanis Club for Angela Fernandez on Saturday February 18, 2017. The same information above could be said for this ramp too. Those members of Kiwanis and other volunteers were Gary Nelson, Gary Strunk, Lucky Bovo and William Stich. Thanks guys, and I am sure that the recipients of these ramps are very appreciative.

March 3, 1913- - A woman's suffrage march in Washington D.C.. was attacked by angry onlookers while police stood by. The march occurred the day before Woodrow Wilson's inauguration. Many of the 5,000 women participating were spat upon and struck in the face as a near riot ensued. Secretary of War Henry Stimson then ordered soldiers from Fort Myer to restore order.
March 4, 1830 - - Former President John Quincy Adams returned to Congress as a representative from Massachusetts. He was the first ex-president ever to return to the House and served eight consecutive terms.
March 5, 1946 - - The Iron Curtain speech was delivered by Winston Churchill at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. Churchill used the term to describe the boundary in Europe between free countries of the West and nations of Eastern Europe under Soviet Russia's control.

Grand Prismatic Spring........The Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park is the largest hot spring in the United States, and the third largest in the world. after 'Frying Pan Lake in New Zealand and Boiling Lake in Dominica.
Grand Prismatic Spring was noted by geologists working in the Ha7yden Geological Survey of 1871, and named by them for its striking coloration. It's colors match the rainbow dispersion of white light by an optical prism, red, orange, yellow, green, and blue.
The first records of the spring are from early European explorers and surveyors. In 1839, a group of fur trappers from the American Fur Company crossed the Midway Geyser Basin and made note of a 'boiling lake', most likely the Grand Prismatic Spring, with a diameter of 300 feet. In 1870 the Washburn -Langford-Deanne Expedition visited the spring, noting a 50 foot geyser nearby later named Excelsior.
The spring is approximately 370 feet in diameter and is 160 feet deep. The spring discharges an estimated 560 US gallons of 160 Degree F. water per minute.
