PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEJohn Button/Kiwanis International President
(taken from Special 100th Anniversary issue of KIWANIS)
January 21....1915....the day the world changed. On that day, the State of Michigan granted the charter to the Detroit No. 1 Kiwanis Club and the world changed forever. Troubles changed forever. Troubles surfaced soon after the chartering as struggles developed between the first members over the clubs focus; improved business practices and profits or community service. Many arguments and fisfights later, those favoring community service prevailed. And the rest is history.
We celebrate our 100th year history beginning with our float in the Rose Parade on New Year's Day. Then it's on to
Detroit for that club's centennial celebration weekend, January 23-24. From there, the Centennial Tour begins, as Debbie and I travel to 12 Kiwanis centers around the globe to celebrate thousands of Kiwanians just like you. All of this will culminate in Indianapolis, Indiana, June 25-28 at our 100th Annual Kiwanis International Convention. We are going to paint the city in Kiwanis colors, and have a Kiwanis party like never before.
What better way to celebrate our centennial than to give a gift of ouir own to the world. And we will. We'll deliver the end of maternal-neonatal tetanus to the world. What a proud moment for every Kiwanians around the globe. I will be humbled and honored to present this gift. Let's dig deeper and raise a few more dollar4s to put The Eliminate project over the top. Let's make history again! As we commemorate 100 years of Kiwanis fun, fellowship and service, we're also ushering in our next century. We have every reason to celebrate our past 100 years of impact, but we must also remain focused on our future. That future depends on the success of The Formula. The success of The Formula depends on you. A formula is a prescription for the future. It is so simple. LOVE KIWANIS. Love the fu, fellowship and service. Share Kiwanis. Share what you love about Kiwanis with others. Live Kiwanis. Make Kiwanis part of every day. And the loving of Kiwanis will follow. It's a circle. When Kiwanians around the world complete the circle, the next century will be ours for the taking...Let's party!

  Our Board of Directors met following last week's meeting for the express purpose of discussing what it means to be a Model Club with regards to eliminating Maternal Neonatal Tetanus from the earth. Figures were discussed, such as how much we have already paid into the Eliminate project through individual donations, fundraising amounts, Happy Dollars, Big Bucks (when given back by the one whose name was drawn, Pro's and Con's were discussed, but when the time came to vote as a Board, we were totally in agreement that this project was a very worthwhile project, but that the club membership needs to have the opportunity to decide whether we, as a club would become a Model Club over the next five years. John Polk has agreed to bring a program on January 22nd, with video, and details, and the club will be given a chance to vote on whether we want to undertake to be a Model Club. Please everyone plan to be at the meeting on January 22nd. |

Don't forget that next Monday, January 19th is Martin Luther Day and we put up flags on that day. This will be our first day to display our flags. Let's all show up at Ted's place at 7am. This is a very important role which our club is involved in. And consider where the money goes, to the Children's Summer Reading Program.

What a very informative program Glen brought to our club last week. A husband & wife team, Richard Parrish, County Extension Agent, Agriculture/Natural Resources and his wife, Laura Petty, County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences. They brought information pertaining to agriculture and natural resources, family and consumer activities, 4-H youth development, and community development. Richard talked all about horticulture, insects, livestock, natural resources, oak wilt and also about a little 'critter' called pecan weevil. Laura discussed the need for Master Wellness volunteers, Nutrition and Health, Child Care Provider Training, "The Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes classes and in general Extension Education. Very interesting in all areas. Thank you Glen,Richard and Laura.

 Rob Martin is out of the hospital and is resting comfortably at home. He will need a period of rehabilitation to get his strength back, but he would enjoy phone calls or maybe even a drop in visit. Knowing Rob, it won't be long before he is back at his old grind. We love you Rob, and keep plugging along. Take your time, and get completely well.

You will notice that Moe has assigned individuals for each week's programs during the month of February, March & April. It is upon the shoulders of the person whose name is down for a specific day during the next three months to provide a program for the day you have been assigned to. Your bulletin editor would appreciate notice as to who you are bringing as a program at least two weeks prior to the scheduled date. The reason for this is so that the program details can be put in the bulletin to let the club know ahead of time. Please do that. Please provide name, profession and subject material to Del Brown whose email is dbrown12@austin.rr.com.

Last Thursday,Pancake Day tickets to sell were handed out by Randy Cook. Let's do a great job of
selling them. This is a big fundraiser, and it usually does not change from year to year. Letters and forms to distribute for silent auction items were also handed out. Again, let me reiterate the importance of this event. We need everyone to be involved, because there is something for everyone to do. Rememb
er we have two serving periods, and it would be nice if we had a new crew for morning and a new crew for afternoon. Remember the date....February 26th, from 11:30am - 1:00pm....5:00pm - 7:00pm. We will need help in setting up, serving, cooking, roamers, ticket takers, movers, clean uppers. More about that later.

Well here's some more trivia about our club. Keep in mind these are actual things that happened back in the 30's, 40's & 50's.
Some you will recognize, some will not, but it's fascinating to go back in time.
...Dad Abney argued for turning the courthouse around so the front could face properly.......the debate raged as to whether to construct a ferry or a neew bridge o
ver the San Marcos River....the Baptist preacher at a meeting at Rio Vista waded into the river fully clothed to "save" a young girl from drowning, not knowing the whole affair of the upset canoe was rigged.....It was part of the induction of new members to admonish them not to wear the Kiwanis pin anywhere that Jack Wood would not be seen.....the founder of Kiwanis, Allen S. Browne, was in San Marcos, and signed the membership certificate for Rodgers Storey....at the first Pancake Supper, milk was donated, but we had to pay the exorbitant price of 40c a quart for cream
.....Kiwanis inherited the Ku Klux Klan piano.
