"Call for Big Bucks!
Well, last Thursday Garry White's name was drawn out, but he wasn't wearing his Kiwanis pin, so sorry Garry!
"Wow!Wow!Wow!Wow!Wow!
I don't know how the rest of the club felt about Garry White giving not just a synopsis of the Thai Cave Rescue back in June, but he gave us some pretty scary stuff regarding cave diving. I have been in caves before, but never dove in any. It was scary to say the least, and Gary gave us a very thorough bubble by bubble description of what dangers are involved in that sport. Of course the event he was telling us about could have come out a whole lot worse, but for the seriousness of the whole matter.
Garry has had some pretty spectacular trips himself, but cave diving was not one of them, but he filled us in on all the particulars, dangers and results if you didn't know what you were doing. Thank you Garry. Your program was fantastic.
Kiwanis of the Month of August
Here President Doug is presenting Charles Johnson with a Certificate awarding him special recognition as Kiwanian of the Month of August 2018.
As the certificate reads, Charles has been very active in the club, to include practically spending full time working the with the Medical Explorers. He served as club treasurer for a year, as well as being involved in just about every project our club puts on. A well deserved recognition for a well deserving man.
Program for this coming Week
Our program for this coming Thursday is being brought by Andrew Gary. He is bringing Dianne Wassenich who will fill us in what the Green Belt Alliance is all about.
In essence, the Green Belt Alliance's mission is to create and conserve an interconnected system of parks & natural areas for our community and for future generations. As you can see this takes a lot of hard work and a strong vision for the future. Be sure and don't miss this unique program.....This Thursday, September 6th. Bring a friend.
Rhonda White gets special Recognition!
At the beginning of last week's club meeting, President Doug presented Rhonda White with a special Certificate of Appreciation for the wonderful work she did in chairing a recent fundraiser for our club - namely arranging for Butter Braid Pastries to provide delicious pastries and cookies for members of our club to sell to customers. It was very successful and as you can see by the photos, both Rhonda and Doug were very pleased. This fundraiser was a small effort, but couldn't have been accomplished if Rhonda and others had arranged it and gone out and convinced customers that this was the best tasting pastries and cookies ever! Thank you Rhonda!
Putting Up Flags on Labor Day
Well, it didn't rain, the weather was great and we had 14 Kiwanians out to put up flags on Labor Day. We also had Denise Caffey from the San Marcos Record to take some pictures for the paper. Randy got the honors. Those others who put up flags for this day were: Glen Rydl, Francis Mendez, Del Brown, Frederick Case, Gary Nelson (covered two routes), Randal Grizzle, Lon Shell, Moe Johnson, Doug & Jeanne Balkman,James Collier, Charles Walts, Charles Johnson and Ted Breihan. Great job guys & gal.
A Day we Shall Always Remember.....Patriot Day
Another Flag Day will be Patriot Day, indeed a day no one will ever forget. September 11, Flags will be put up, so those who are putting flags up meet at Ted's Place at 7am, on September 11, and raise the Red, White & Blue in honor of those who gave their lives in this cruel and awful incident. Let us remember all of our patriots around the world that are fighting those who would want to destroy the United States.
San Marcos Kiwanis Board Meeting.
The Board of Directors met last Thursday evening at 5pm in Room 305 of the Professional Building of CTMC. The following voting members were present: Doug Balkman, Kelli Whigham, Glen Rydl, Randy Cook, Cynthia Bentley, Francis Mendez, Gary Nelson, & Del Brown( non voting)
Some of the items discussed were: Installation Banquet Food Menu; A Donation Request was approved; Investment Fund Recommended was discussed and further discussion will follow.
Other miscellaneous items were brought up for information: New Badges, Veteran's Day Parade Entry Form, and the Membership Committee Notes were discussed.
There will not be a Board Meeting for the month of September.
Week of August 31st to September 6th
August 31, 1997 - - Britain's Princess Diana died at age 36 from massive internal injuries suffered in a high-speed car crash, reportedly after being pursued by photographers. The crash occurred shortly after midnight in Paris inside a tunnel along the Seine River at the Pont de l'Alma bridge, less than a half mile north of the Eiffel Tower. Also killed in the crash were Diana's companion, Dodi Fayed, 42, and chauffeur Henri Paul. A fourth person in the car, bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, was seriously injured!
September 1, 1983 - - Korean Air Lines Flight 007 was shot down by a Russian fighter jet while on route from New York to Seoul, killing all 269 persons on board. The Boeing 747 reportedly strayed 100 miles off course over secret Soviet Russian military installations on the Kamchatka Peninsula and Sakhalin Island. It crashed in the Sea of Japan.
September 2, 31 B.C. - - Roman legions under Augustus Caesar defeated Mark Anthony's naval force at Actium.
September 3, 1833 - - The New York Sun newspaper first appeared, marking the beginning of the 'penny press' inexpensive newspapers sold on sidewalks by newspaper boys. The paper focused on human interest stories and sensationalism and by 1836 was the largest seller in America with a circulation of 30,000.
September 4, 1781 - - Los Angeles was founded by the Spanish Governor of California, Felipe de Neve, near the site of the Native American village of Yang-na. The original name was El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles (The Town of the Queen of the Angels)
September 5, 1975 - - The first of two September assassination attempts on President Gerald Ford occurred as a woman pointed a gun at the President in Sacramento, California. Two weeks later, a second attempt occurred as another woman fired a shot at Ford in San Francisco. Ford was not harmed in either incident.
September 6, 1991 - - Leningrad was renamed Saint Petersburg by Russian legislators following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Russia's second largest city had been known as Leningrad for 67 years in honor of Vladmir Lenin, founder of the Soviet Union.

The Installation Banquet is only about 3 weeks away. This is our grandest banquet and will be held on September 27 at 6pm at the Price Center. More details will follow as to price, menu, etc. This is the grandest of all of our banquets, and members & spouses should make every effort to be there. Price & menu will be in next week's bulletin. As far as cost is concerned, plan to get your check to Randy at least a week before the banquet.
Our special speaker will be Jimmie Scott, President Emeritus of San Marcos Academy. Special awards will be given out, such as Perfect Attendance Certificates, and of course Kiwanian of the Year. New Officers will be installed. Let's plan to have a great time, and look forward to another great year with our club.

"Writing in code has been around for centuries. And, many rulers and military leaders did it. In fact, Charles I of England's papers were so coded that they didn't get understood until 1850. People couldn't understand any coded document soon figured out that the meaning wasn't in the lines that were readable, but the message was written in invisible ink between the lines showing. Soon, society just adapted the phrase 'reading between the lines' to mean that any document had hidden information that wasn't obvious when reading what was seen on the paper and to analyze it better."

"A couple had two little boys, ages 8 and 10, who were excessively mischievous. They were always getting in trouble and their parents knew that, if any mischief occurred in their town, their sons were probably involved.
The boys' mother heard that a clergyman in town had been successful in disciplining children, so she asked if he would speak with her boys. The clergyman agreed, but asked to see them individually. So the mother sent her 8-year-old first, in the morning, with the older boy to see the clergyman in the afternoon.
The clergyman with a booming voice, sat the younger boy down and asked him sternly, 'Where is God?'
The boy's mouth dropped open, but he made no response, sitting there with his mouth hanging open, wide-eyed. So the clergyman repeated the question in an even sterner voice, 'Where is God!!?' Again the boy made no attempt to answer. So the clergyman raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy's face and bellowed, 'WHERE IS GOD!?'
The boy screamed and bolted from the room, ran directly home and dove into his closet, slamming the door behind him. When his older brother found him in the closet, he asked, 'What happened?' The younger brother, gasping for breath, replied, 'We are in BIG trouble this time, dude. God is missing - and they think WE did it!'"
