What a program we had last week!!
You know when you meet week after week at the same place to hold our Kiwanis club meeting and eat lunch, you just don't think too much about the place you are calling home for long, long time ago.
Well what do you know, Del Brown's name was drawn for Big Bucks. He didn't keep it, but turned it back in....$4.00.
Kiwanian for the Month of November 2018
Pres. Kelli Whigham chose Jeanne Balkman to be Kiwanian for the month of November. Jeanne was very instigational in doing some rather unique recognition posters to put on this year's Veteran's Day Parade Float. She took a picture of each of the veterans that are members of our club and made posters of each one and attached them to the side of the float. Besides that Jeanne has been a very energetic member in working with many other projects. She is a hard worker and a great tribute to our club. Congratulations Jeanne. San Marcos Kiwanis Board Meeting.
Our November Board meeting met at 5:00pm on November 29th in Room 305, third floor of the CTMC Professional Building.
Those present were Kelli Whigham, president; Doug Balkman, past president; Rhonda White, president elect; Glen Rydl, secretary, Randy Cook, treasurer; Lon shell, Board mbr; Andrew Gary, board mbr;Charles Walts, board mbr; and Del Brown (non voting), bulletin editor.
It was a good meeting, and quite productive. The Secretary's minutes were approved, as well as the Finance bulletin.
There was general discussion around several subjects including approval of new member application for Ronda Young, (Pam Cook is her sponsor)
Because December's meeting falls on Dec, 27, it was agreed not to have a board meeting in December, but wait until January 24, 2019. It was approved. The meeting was adjourned at 6:00pm.
The Program for this coming Thursday will be presented by Beverly Crumley. Let's have a good turnout.

"Christmas Interclub Celebration"
Our club invites other clubs in our Division to join our club in a Christmas Interclub celebration. It will be held on December 13th at the newly renovated Casa Maria Restaurant at 706 S. Guadalupe St, San Marcos, TX. It will be held at 12:00 noon, but come early. Spouses are invited. The restaurant has lunch specials for $6.99 or you can order from the menu for under $15.00. Y'all come, ya hear!

November 30, 1782 - - A provisional peace treaty was signed between Great Britain and the United States heralding the end of America's War of Independence. Th8e final treaty was signed in Paris on September 3, 1783. It declared the U.S. 'to be free, sovereign and independent states...' and that the British Crown '...relinquishes all claims to the government, propriety and territorial rights of the same, and every part thereof.'"
December 1, 1941 - -The American Civil Air Patrol (CAP), a U.S. Air Force auxiliary, was founded as Director of Civilian Defense, former New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, signed the formal order. The CAP currently provides aerospace education, a CAP cadet program, and emergency services such as locating missing aircraft.
December 2, 1823 - - President James Monroe introduced his "Monroe Doctrine" during his annual message to the Congress, prohibiting any further colonization of the American continents by European powers, stating, 'we should consider any attempt on their part to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous to our peace and safety....
December 3, 1967 - - The first successful heart transplant was performed by Dr. Christian Barnard at Cape Town, South Africa, on Louis Washkansky, who lived for 18 days.
December 4, 1991 - -The Last American hostage held in Lebanon was released. Journalist Terry Anderson of the Associated Press had been kidnapped on March 16, 1985 and held for 2,454 days by Islamic (Holy War)Jihad (Holy War) captors. He was one of 15 Americans held hostage for periods ranging from two months to more than six years. Three of the hostages; William Buckley, Peter Kilburn and Lieutenant Colonel William Higgins, were killed during their captivity. The others were released one or two at a time.
December 5, 1791 - - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died a pauper at age 35 in Vienna, Austria. He had become seriously ill and rapidly declined, leading to speculation that he had been poisoned, although this was later proven false. During his brief life he created over 600 musical compositions and is widely considered on of the finest composers who ever lived.
December 6, 1917 - - Two ships collided at Halifax, Nova Scotia, resulting in an explosion that killed more than 1,500 persons and injured 8,000. The Norwegian ship Imo collided with the French munitions ship Mont Blanc which was loaded with supplies for the war in Europe, including 5,000 tons of TNT. A tidal wave caused by the explosion destroyed much of the city.

"TO TALK A BLUE STREAK!"
"To talk rapidly and, usually, interminably. We seem to have made this up from two or more other American expressions, all referring to lightning. As long ago as 1830, for instance, mail coaches, though drawn by horses, moved with such rapidity as to leave a 'blue streak' behind them. And if one 'made a streak for home,' or any other designation, he was in such a hurry to get there that, figuratively, he ran like lightning. Or it could be that we have partly taken a German expression, das Blaue vom Himmel schwatzen, to charter the blue from the skies. The British equivalent is 'to talk off a donkey's hind legs,' which with us is 'to talk one's arm off,' in modern slang.

What About the Nevada State Flag History
"Nevada's official flag was adopted On March 26, 1929, but was revised on June 8th, 1991. The flag has a deep blue background. It pictures a yellow, flowing ribbon that reads, "BATTLE BORN." A five-pointed silver star and the words NECADA are under the ribbon. These are surrounded by green sagebrush with yellow flowers. Sagebrush is Nevada's state flower. The silver star represents the rich mineral wealth of Nevada, especially the famous Comstock lode (discovered in 1859), which is one of the largest silver and gold mines ever found. The words, "Battle Born" on Nevada's flag allude to fact that Nevada became a state during the Civil War.

"A Parting Anecdote"
"One of the Lincoln stories has it that, during his 1846 campaign for Congress, he attended a preaching service of Peter Cartwright. The Evangelist called on all who wished to go to Heaven to stand up. All rose but Lincoln. The Evangelist called for all to rise who did not want to go to Hell. 'I am grieved', said Cartwright, 'to see Abe Lincoln sitting back there unmoved by these appeals. If he doesn't want to go to Heaven and doesn't want to escape Hell, will he tell us where he does want to go?'
Lincoln got up slowly and said, 'I'm going to Congress.'"
