Our Board met last Thursday, January 23, 2010, 5:00pm, with the following present: Rhonda White, Kelli Whigham, Moe Johnson, Doug Balkman, Andrew Gary, Charles Walts, (Del Brown, non voting). Discussion points will be shared with the club.

John is at home now, but under the care of hospice. He is in bed, but would enjoy a phone call. Ted is remarkable, and both he and his wife Francis are truly a team. Keep them both in prayer
Our Program for this coming Thursday, January 30, 2020
Frederick Case will be presenting the program for this coming Thursday. It will deal with a discretionary grant program called 'Gear Up'. This discretionary grant program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR-UP provides six-year or seven years grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP grantees serve an entire cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow through high school. GEAR UP funds are also used to provide college scholarships to low-income students.

History Facts from January 24 to January 30
January 24, 1848 - - The California gold rush began with the accidental discovery of the precious metal near Coloma during construction of a Sutter's sawmill. An announcement by President Polk later in the year caused a national sensation and resulted in a flood of 'Forty-Niners' seeking wealth.
January 25, 1533 - - King Henry VIII married his second wife, Anne Boleyn, in defiance of Pope Clement who had refused to annul his first marriage. The King later broke all ties with Rome and became Supreme Head of the Church of England.
January 26, 1788 - - The British established a settlement at Sydney Harbor in Australia as 11 ships with 778 convicts arrived, setting up a penal colony to relieve overcrowded prisons in England.
January 27, 1943 - - The U.S. 8th Air Force conducted the first all-American bombing raid on Germany as 55 bombers targeted Wilhelmshaven, losing three planes while claiming to have shot down 22 German fighters. the success of this first mission encouraged U.S. military planners to begin regular daylight bombing raids, which eventually resulted in high casualty rates for the American crewmen involved.
January 28, 1547 - - King Henry VIII of England died and was succeeded by his son, Edward VI. Henry had ruled since 1509 and had broken all ties with the Roman Catholic Church over the issue of divorce. He married a total of six times. Edward VI was the son of his third wife, Jane Seymour. Edward became king at age 10, but died of tuberculosis at age 16. He was followed by his half-sister, Mary.
January 29, 1891 - - Hawaii proclaimed Liluokalani as its queen. Renowned for her song Aloha Oe, she had a reign of only four years until she was forced to abdicate in 1895 under pressure from powerful businessmen.
January 30,1835 - - President Andrew Jackson survived the first assassination attempt on a U.S. President. While leaving the House of Representatives Chamber, an insane would-be assassin fired two pistols shots at him, however both pistols misfired and the president was unharmed.
Warren G. Harding
Warren Harding was the 29th U.S. President and served from 1921 - 1923 before dying of an apparent heart attack. Harding's presidency was overshadowed by the criminal activities of some of his cabinet members and and other government officials, although he himself was not involved in any wrongdoing. An Ohio native and Republican, Harding was a successful newspaper publisher who served in the Ohio legislature and the U.S. Senate. In 1920, he won the general election in a landslide, promising a 'return to normalcy' after the hardships of World War I. As president, he favored pro-business policies and limited immigration. He died suddenly in San Francisco in 1923, and was succeeded by Vice President Calvin Coolidge. After Harding's death, the Teapot Dome Scandal and other instances of corruption came to light damaging his reputation.

"This town was named after the man who donated the land for the townsite. Cattleman 'Two Dot' Wilson, who branded his cattle with two dots, gets credit for this name.
"Outsidecity hall, a boy selling newspapers bellowed, 'EXTRA! EXTRA! Read all about it! Two men swindled!' A man walked up to the boy, bought a paper, and sat down to read it. 'Hey, kid,' he protested a few moments later, 'there's nothing in here about two men being cheated.'

"Why Is It called a 'kangaroo court?
"A kangaroo court is a mock court set up outside of established legal procedures. Institutions of this sort exist in most large prisons, where inmates fine and punish each other for various 'infractions,' The most plausible theory claims that the phrase originated in Australia, which at one time was a penal colony of the British Empire. The irregular proceedings of such unauthorized courts there were compared to the erratic leaps of the kangaroo."

"Uncle Sam!"
"There is no better personification of the United States government than Uncle Sam. Supposedly the figure originated during the war of 1812. One Samuel Wilson, a merchant in the slaughtering business in Troy, New York, shipped large quantities of meat and other commodities to American forces stationed in various places in the North. Soldiers from Troy recognized the origin of the shipments by the packaging and jokingly spoke of the meat as 'Uncle Sam's beef.' This expression was quickly adopted by their fellow soldiers and applied to all property of the United States government. Now it is a synonym for the U.S. Government itself."
"Although Robert E. Lee is best remembered as a commander of the Confederate army during the Civil War, it is not usually known that he was also a distinguished United States Career military officer who was not a strong supporter of the Southern cause. In fact, Lee believed that the institution of slavery was a moral curse, and had freed his own family's slaves prior to the start of the war. He also opposed the attempts by Southern states to secede from the Union.
Lee had strong loyalties to both the North and South as hostilities neared. His career included thirty-five years of service to the United States, several of which were as the commander of the West Point Military Academy. However, his family, children, and home were in his beloved Virginia.
Lee's stature and devotion as an American military figure led President Lincoln to offer him command of the Union army when the war began. However, Jefferson Davis had made a similar offer to Lee for command of the Virginia and the South and eventually became general in chief of all Confederate forces.
Having being turn down by one of the nation's most respected military leaders, President Lincoln ordered that the Lee family home be turned into a federal cemetery so that Lee would never wish to return there. The cemetery that now surrounds Lee's Curtis family estate is Arlington National Cemetery."("Myth Information by J.Allen Varasdi)
