Kenneth Moss
Kenneth used to be a member of our San Marcos Balcones Club of San Marcos. Ken passed away on July 5th, 2017 here in San Marcos. He was 84 years of age. Let us as fellow Kiwanians remember Ken and his service in Kiwanis.
We've been missing McBride Wilson for the last 2-3 weeks, and upon investigating, found that he has had several bouts of surgery, but is recovering nicely. When someone as faithful as McBride misses, we know it was a good reason. We all want to wish you top-notch recovery so we can see your smiling presence back with us.
Thanks to Randy Cook for bringing Gary Gilbert, president of Sunset Lanes Bowling area last week. I am a bowler, and I was astounded at so many unique things that Gary brought up about this wonderful sport. I am so proud that at my age, I am still able to throw the ball like I do, sometimes good, sometimes bad, but it is terrific exercise. I learned a lot just by listening to Gary. Randy is a good bowler, and his additional comments about his bowling, along with Gary's sharing of pictures, and comments might persuade others to get involved with this great sport. It is healthy, it is professional in that there are always pointers in this sport that can only improve our bowling. I am glad Randy brought Gary - it was a different type of program, but one that all of us got into the asking of questions and listening to both Gary who knows what he is talking about, and seeing our club get enthused and 'cranked' up by envisioning applying some of the tips that Gary gave us to improve our bowling. I know that I can use all the help I can get. Thanks to both of you!
Our Program for this coming Thursday, July 20th 2017
Moe Johnson will be bringing the program this coming Thursday, and it will be a double-smash program. He is bringing Ricci Woodard and Cat Osterman from the Texas State Bobcat Club Softball Club.
Ricci is the head coach of the Bobcat Club and in 17 years at the helm of the Texas State softball program, head coach Ricci Woodward has guided the program to a 598-380-1 record, 10 conference championships and seven NCAA Regional Championship appearances. Coach Woodward has developed 75 all-conference sections, 22 all-region honorees, four NFCA All American and three CoSIDA Academic All-Americas. In addition she has earned four coach of the year awards. The 2017 season saw Coach Woodward lead the Bobcats to a 42-17 overall record, a runner up finish in both the Sun Belt regular season standings and the conference championship and an at-large berth to the NCAA College Station Regional.
Also, our program welcomes Cat Osterman, whose profession is Professional Softball player.
She threw her first pitch in 5th grade and requested pitching lessons for her 11th birthday. She was named Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year in 2001 during her senior year in high school. She holds the career NCAA record for strikeouts with 2,265 and strikeouts per seven innings at 14.34, besting the previous record-holder by almost 4 strikeouts.
She is four time All American and three time USA Softball Collegiate National Player of the Year. She is the first softball player to ever grace the cover of Sports Illustrated twice.
She also helped lead the U.S.. to a gold medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. And she also became the pitching coach at DePaul University in 2007.

There will be a Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, July 27th at 5:30pm at Brookdale San Marcos North.

Finally, they agreed to meet at the ocean View Restaurant because the drinks were cheap, the restaurant offered free snacks, the band was good, there was no cover charge, and there were lots of cute guys.
At their reunion 10 years later, the group of 35-year old girlfriends discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally they agreed to meet at the Ocean View Restaurant because the atmosphere was good, it was right near the gym and, if they went late enough, there wouldn't be too many whiny little kids.
At their reunion 10 years later, the group of 45-year-old girlfriends discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally they agreed to meet at the Ocean View Restaurant because the martinis were big and the waiters were younger.
Ten years later, the group of 55-year-old girlfriends discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally they agreed to meet at the Ocean View Restaurant because the prices were reasonable, the wine list was good, the restaurant had windows that opened (in case of hot flashes), and fish is good for cholesterol.
Ten years later, the group of 65-year-old girlfriends discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally, they agreed to meet at the Ocean View Restaurant because the lighting was good and the restaurant had an early bird special.
10 years later, the group of 75-years- old girlfriends discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally, they agreed to meet at the Ocean View Restaurant because the food was not too spicy and the restaurant was handicapped-accessible.
Ten years later, the group of 85-years-old girlfriends discussed where to meet for dinner. Finally, they agreed to meet at the Ocean View Restaurant because they had never been there before!!!!"
July 14, 1791 - - In England, the Birmingham riot occurred on the second anniversary of the Bastille. Mob rule lasted for three days, targeting controversial scientist and theologian J. Priestly's home and laboratory as well as the homes of his friends. Priestly, who had express support for the American and French revolutions, fled to London with his family and later on to America.
July 15, 1918 - - During the Battle of the Marne in World War I, German General Erich Dudendorff launched Germany's fifth and last, offensive to break through the Chateau-Thierry salient. However, the Germans were stopped by American, British and Italian divisions. On July 18, General Foch, Commander-in-Chief of the Allied troops, launched a massive counter-offensive. The Germans began a retreat lasting four months until they requested an armistice on November 11, 1918. It was named 'Armistice Day' when the Germans and the Allies of WW I signed the armistice at Compiegne, France.
July 16, 1969 - - The Apollo 11 Lunar landing mission began with a liftoff from Kennedy Space Center at 9:37 a.m.
July 17, 1996 - - TWA Flight 800 departed Kennedy International Airport in New York bound for Paris, but exploded in mid-air 12 minutes after takeoff, apparently the result of a mechanical failure. The Boeing 747 jet crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Long Island about 8:31 pm. All 212 passengers and 17 crew members on board were killed.
July 19-20, 1848 - - A women's rights convention was held at Seneca Falls, New York. Topics discussed included voting rights, property rights and divorce. The convention marked the beginning of an organized women's rights movement in the U.S.
July 20, 1954 - - An agreement was signed in Geneva, Switzerland, ending hostilities between French forces in Vietnam and the People's Army of Vietnam.

"Hocking Hills State Park and Ash Cave - Ohio"
Hocking Hills State Park is a non-contiguous state park in the Hocking Hills region of Hocking County Ohio. It is contiguous with the Hocking State Forest. Within the park are several spectacular rock formations, including Old Man's Cave, a narrow, deep gorge featuring waterfalls; Rock House, a cliffed area with a rock shelter; Cantwell Cliff, a broad gorge at the head of a hollow with a unique stone stairway; and Ash Cave (photo), a large rock shelter with a small waterfall, and Cedar Falls, a larger waterfall south of Old Man's Cave.
Hocking County was named after the Hockhocking River. Hockhocking, in the Delaware tongue, signifies a bottle. In Shawnee, Wea-tha-Kagh-Qua-sepe, meant bottle river. The Hockhocking River had a waterfall of nearly 20 feet located about 6 or 7 miles northwest of Lancaster, Ohio. Above the falls, the creek was very narrow and straight, forming the "bottle neck".
More than 330 million years ago, the Hocking Hills State Park are was relatively level and was covered by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. When the Appalacian Mountains arose, form and feature were cast upon the area and created Hockingt Hills State Park.
