Francis Mendez brought a very informative speaker from his department at Texas State - Dr. Jesus Jimenez, who spoke at great length on the new Master's program being initiated in the Engineering Department of the University. When a student, in conversation with a business learns of a desire to develop a certain way of doing things, the student then uses all of the resources available to him, and in conjunction with other students doing the same thing, work out possible solutions to the business's desires. It is a give & take enterprise, but is making some wonderful results. Thank you Francis for bringing Dr. Jimenez to share these ideas with our club.
Everyone loves an Unexpected Gift.....
Well that's exactly what happened to Kelli Whigham last Thursday when before the meeting began, Pres. Tracy called Kelli Whigham up front and presented her with a bag full of goodies, and how deserving she was. She did a great job in being the overall coordinator for this year's October Dash 5K race back in October. A lot of hard work, a lot of coordinating, a lot of overseeing, and Kelli did a magnificent job of bringing different people into do the various tasks that are important for an event like this. You are so deserving Kelli. Congratulations.
We had a brand new visitor at our Noon meeting last week. Her name was Stephanie Nelson. She was somewhat familiar with what Kiwanis was about. She was given an Informational Book, and invited her back.

"The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful years and heartful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the Source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they not fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.
In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and to provoke their aggression, peach has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theater of military conflict, while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.
Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the field of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship, the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than theretofore. Population has steadily increased notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battlefield, and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.
No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.
It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens, in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father, who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions just due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, the , to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union."

"Kiwanis Is A Verb"...No.19.
"Committees in Kiwanis!
In all but the smallest Kiwanis clubs, the real service activity is committee-centered. Committees submit annual budget proposals to the club's Board and, once their proposed programs and budgets are approved, the committees may then function with only periodic progress reports to the Board. They may spend their allotted funds and undertake projects without further approvals. That's the theory!
Every club member is assigned to one or more committees and every committee meets regularly to carry out its program. Each month, every committee reports its progress to the club's President and Secretary, and each newly inducted club member is promptly assigned to served on a committee, whose chairperson enthusiastically invites the new member to attend the next committee meeting. That's the theory!
Practically every issue that comes before the Board passes through a committee first and it arrives at the club's Board meeting with a committee recommendation. That's the theory.
The committee chairperson speaks for the committee at Club Board meetings and he or she (or an assigned substitute) attends every club board meeting to answer questions and represent the interests of the committee there. That's the theory.
In very small clubs, where there simply aren't enough members to make up the standing committees found in most Kiwanis clubs, the Board, or the entire club, constitutes a de facto "Committee of the Whole." Every Board or club member participates in every decision.
As a new member of your Kiwanis Club, your president has probably already assigned you to a committee and introduced you to your committee chairman. Every club's service and administrative committees have their own personalities but the following thumb nail descriptions of the most common Kiwanis club committees will give you a general idea of what to expect of your committee.
First an important distinction. Most Kiwanis committees are Service Committees , the idea of doing community service (local or global) is at least part of what motivates most people to join Kiwanis. At least two common club committees are Administrative Committees. Their function is to support the basic operation of the club. The President tries to take each Kiwanian's talents and interests into account in making committee assignments. (Next week, we will look at some Service Committees)

A pulpit committee went to hear a prospective minister preach. The best thing they liked about his sermon is that it was only ten minutes long. They immediately called him as their new pastor. His first week in the new church he preached a 30 minute sermon. The next week his sermon was almost 2 hours. The deacons met with him and asked him to explain. His response was. that the first time the committee heard him preach, he had a new set of dentures in his mouth that hurt him terribly so he could hardly preach 10 minutes and had to stop talking because of the pain. The second time he preached, he said his dentures felt fine so he preached a normal 30 minute sermon. They said that explains those two sermons, but please explain to us this last sermon that was two hours long. He said that's easy. I got up that particular morning and accidentally put my wife's dentures in my mouth, and when I started talking, I couldn't shut up!"

The real-life Uncle Sam was Samuel Wilson, born in Troy, New York in 1766. Well liked by those around him, he became known as ''Uncle Sam". While working as a governmental inspector of military supplies during the War of 1812, he stamped the initials "U.S." on inspected items. When asked what it meant, he chided "Uncle Sam", rather than the obvious "United States". He gained fame as "that fellow from the government, Uncle Sam." Years later, Thomas Nast. a famous political cartoonist, immortalized the Uncle Sam figure we know today in a drawing that has become a permanent symbol for our government.
