We had several guests at this meeting: Susie's son Sebastian, Jesse's guest Albert, Glen's son Darren and Kristi's husband Chase. Welcome! Chase has come a number of times I think probably for the chicken fried steak. Andrew, one of our honorary members, also attended.

 

Rick had a list of announcements:

Feb. 20th will be the celebraion of birthdays' meeting. Penny, James, Willie and Luanne all have February birthdays.

 

Flag Day is Feb. 17th. We seem to have lost one of the Flag Captains for a route.  Glen will do a check on James. We need someone to pick up his route.

 

Rick brought the approval of the new Bylaws up for a vote by the general membership. It passed unanimously by those who attended this meeting. They will be submitted to the IRS in order to get 501(c)3 status.

 

Lon is having a McBride Wilson campground work day this Saturday, Feb.8th from 9:00-1:00.

 

Looking ahead:

April 27th is our scheduled Kiwanis Cornhole Tournament at the Southern Star Event Center. Jesse said the goal is 60 teams. See if you can get family members and friends together for teams so we can reach that goal. He put together a committee with Veronica, Kelli and Susie, so far. 

 

March 21st is the Chamber Cornhole Tournament at the Pauline Espinosa Community Hall. If possible, try to go to see how it is run.

 

The Kyle 4-H Fancy Feathers Poultry and Rabbit Show is at the Dripping Springs Ranch Park Event Center this Saturday, Feb. 8th from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is a fancy chicken coop that I understand looks like a house being raffled off. Tickets for that are $2 each or 3 for $5.

 

Susie and Veronica are interested in being on the Board. Many thanks to both of them for volunteering. This will be voted on at our next board meeting on Feb. 19th.

 

Even though it is just February, Glen will head up coordination between our club and the San Marcos Library Summer Reading Program.

 

Update on School Fuel:

Luanne, Rick and Penny have been volunteering to help with packing the food on Thursdays. There are many different organizations now volunteering which is good to hear for the program. School Fuel has moved to a new location at 1331 SH. 123.

 

Sophia, Associate Director of the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State and Lauren talked about what this facility and program covers. Although it could seem somewhat ghoulish dealing with dead bodies and decomposition, it is a vital program for quality scientific research benefiting medical, legal and anthropological communities. They have a large outdoor decomposition facility located at Freeman Ranch and a documented human skeleton collection housed at the "Grady Early Forensic Anthropology Research Laboratory." The bodies come via donations by a person prior to death and are kept in perpetuity. The bodies have to be less than 500 lbs. for safety purposes. A little over 900 bodies have been donated so far. There is a CSI effect which caused an increase in interest in the forensic science program.

 

One of the main ways they pay for the program is through workshops which are offered 30-40 times a year. Law enforcement and the military take training on how to identify bodies. Workshop topics include expanding  knowledge of forensic anthropological methods for developing a biological profile, establishing positive identification, and interpreting bone trauma.
