REPORTS:
Although the Flag Committee did not have a report, Jeanne shared some photos of their assembling more flags to add to their collection. This committee does quite an intensive amount of work behind the scenes to keep flags and their accessories and parts in good order plus make new ones along with the putting up and taking down the flags on appointed days and routes in a variety of weather. Be sure to let them know how much you appreciate this major contribution they make year round for our club and the community.
Lon:
Lon reminded us about the Townhall meeting concerning Human Trafficking happening next Thursday, April 18th, at Goodnight Jr. High School on Hwy 123 starting at 7:00 p.m.
He also thanked Moe for writing the newsletter last week. I add my "thanks," as well. Moe creates some good stories.
Beverly:
She did a short report on the Clay Shoot. They still need teams, sponsors, and raffle items to make this a success.
Kelli:
The next dinner social is on Wed., the 17th, at Kerbey Lane at 6:00 p.m. Please RSVP to Kelli if you plan on going.
Kristin:
Kristin brought hard copies of the latest itemization of balance numbers for the Service and Administrative accounts plus briefly went over the budget.
PROGRAM:
Moe introduced our speaker Amy Yarbrough who is a Pickleball Professional. Moe had given some background for the evolving popularity of related sports from tennis to racketball to pickleball. Amy took it from there to give us how this is now a most popular sport of this time. Any age can play and it is especially favored by older people who may have some physical limitations. She said it is very social, addictive and great exercise. Amy originally was a basketball coach and player but after two ACL injuries she needed to make a change in sports activity. She is proof of the additive nature of it by progressing and practicing hard so she is able to play in the Pro Circuits. There are also Senior Circuits. And, yes, there is money to be made by playing pickleball competitively.
The equipment consists of a lightweight paddle and a wiffle ball. Amy described many of the rules and scoring which is different from tennis. The court is about half the size of a tennis court. She offers training and said someone can be playing after 1 hour of training. Her enthusiasm for this sport is very evident. Amy generously offered to teach a pickleball lesson for a raffle item at the San Marcos Kiwanis Club Clay Shoot. This could be a great opportunity to get started with playing.
