Welcome to our Guest last Thursday.
Our visitor last Thursday, July 14 was Cynthia Bentley, originally from Pontehartrain Kiwanis Club in New Orleans, but has moved to Kyle, Tx. She has held several offices in Kiwanis, and has indicated a desire to join a hopefully new Kiwanis Club in Kyle. This is currently being explored by Frederick Case. We welcome Cynthia to our club, and feel she will be an wonderful addition to our Kiwanis Division. In fact she is responsible for getting our program for this coming Thursday, Mr Sylvester Neal, former Kiwanis International President.
A great Program was shared by Lon Shell last Thursday.
Of all of the many activities that our fellow Kiwanian, Lon Shell is involved in, his participation in the annual Junior Agricultural Mechanics (JAM) Project Show is probably one of his favorites. Lon has been involved in this annual show, which is in conjunction with the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo, for many years, and is very well acquainted with what goes on behind the scenes of the hard, arduous work which applicants, who bring their projects to the show, well aware of the very stiff and meticulous requirements that they must meet in order to be qualified for a possible scholarship. Lon's power point presentation was very informative and revealed that those who took part in this year's show were extremely serious in what they were doing. Thanks Lon, for giving us an update on this year's show.
Well, there wasn't a winner last Thursday, but Gary Strunk's name was drawn, but he wasn't there to collect. Sorry Gary. There's always next week.
FORMER INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT VISITS OUR CLUB THIS THURSDAY.
Mr. Sylvester Neal, former Kiwanis International President (2010-2011) will be visiting our club this coming Thursday, July 21st and bring our program.
Sylvester Neal joined the Kiwanis Club of Fairbanks, Alaska in 1980, and has had a distinguished Kiwanis career during which he served as Club Secretary, Club President, Lt Governor and Governor. He has also served on numerous District and International Committees. His clubs recognized Sylvester as Kiwanis of the Year four times.
During his year as Governor, Sylvester motivated PNW Kiwanians with his theme, "Commitment Counts". As a District wide Governor's Project, he promoted the Kiwanis Family Against Drunk Driving (KFADD), including with Kiwanians all other members of the Kiwanis family (Aktion Clubs, K-Kids, Builder's Club, Key Club and Circle K. Clubs).
Sylvester also serves as the Honorary Chair for the Pacific Northwest District Kiwanis/SIGN project. SIGN stands for Surgical Implant Generating Network and addresses the need for neglected fracture care in more than 40 developing countries of the world. Through this project, he is inspiring Kiwanians Clubs and Divisions to help heal broken bones and restore broken families with their funding support.
Sylvester's professional career includes 26 years of service in fire fighting, airport security, and industrial safety. His career includes service as Fire & Security Chief of the Fairbanks International Airport and two appointed terms as the State Fire Marshal for Alaska.
When Sylvester and his wife Doris relocated from Anchorage, Alaska to Auburn, Washington in September 2001, he transferred his membership to the Kiwanis Club of (The) Valley Auburn. Sylvester has five children and six grandchildren.
Sylvester has the unusual hobby of collecting pennies and had collected more than one million of them before his relocation from Alaska. He attracted nationwide publicity when he cashed in eight hundred thousand pennies before his move. His immediate goal is to replace them, as quickly as possible! For good reason, Sylvester is known by many as "the Penny Man." His supporters say. It just made good 'Cents' to elect Sylvester to the position of International Trustee."
NEW OFFICERS ELECTION THIS COMING THURSDAY, JULY 21.
Last Thursday, July 14th, President Moe Johnson read off the new officers to be elected for the year 2016-2017. They are: President: Tracy Herman, Vice President Doug Balkman, Secretary:Glen Rydl, Treasurer: Charles Johnson, Board Members: Gary Strunk, Francis Mendez..
Please make every effort to be present this coming Thursday, July 21 where you will have an opportunity to vote on these new officers that have been nominated. You may also submit your own nomination if you like, but PLEASE ATTEND.
If you haven't been attending for several weeks, we want you to know we miss you. Your attendance is vital to our club and keeping everyone updated with what is going on. Remember, when you became a member of our club, you made a pledge to attend as many meetings as possible as well as participating in our annual projects.
"Kiwanis Is A Verb"
"Kiwanis Is A Verb!"....This is a little green book that explains Kiwanis better than any book I have read. Every member of our club should have a copy of it, but until we all do, let me put in some ideas that this little book conveys. Let me know if you have a copy of it, and I will stop putting in articles from it, but for our new members, these pages in this little green book are very worthwhile. Here's my first input right from the beginning.
"Kiwanis is a Verb. It is something you do. Lots of Kiwanians do it a couple of hours a week --some a lot more. But in all of the doing there is a single purpose in Kiwanis----service to our communities, especially to benefit the most needy members of our communities.......
New Kiwanians sometimes find Kiwanis traditions strange or even bewildering. Many clubs, for example, open their meetings with a patriotic song.....New Kiwanians may be more baffled by attendance "requirements" than any other aspect of Kiwanis. The words, "Perfect Attendance" especially, are a source of anxiety when, every few weeks new members see one or another of their fellow Kiwanians receive little numbered tabs to attach to their lapel pins proclaiming that they have 1,5,10,20, and occasionally many more, years of "perfect attendance".
Everyone applauds as the tiny tab declaring what may seem like an impossible number of years of perfect attendance is presented to another dedicated Kiwanian. It can seem overwhelming to new Kiwanians that anyone could attend every single meeting, week in and week-out year after year.
Well....they don't. Kiwanians have lives outside of Kiwanis too: they go on business trips; take vacations, have business and personal crises; get sick; visit parents, children and grandkids.......all the things that mark everyone's lives......so......there are 'make ups'. Kiwanians may make up missed meetings. One of the common ways of making up missed meetings is through attending other clubs in our division (Interclubs).....Participation in a planned Kiwanis projects also makes up for a missed club meeting although the 'Official Attendance Rules', limit members to credit for one such make up per month. Our club secretary (Glen Rydl) and our President, (Moe Johnson) have copies of the Official Attendance Rules in his or her Club Leadership Guidebook or Administrative Manual for Kiwanis Leaders and will gladly show them to you. You will find there are all sorts of interesting ways to earn make up credit for missed meeting. 'Nuff for now.

Texas Oklahoma Kiwanis News.
Hill Country Region (Divisions 23, 24, 38) will have 'Club Leadership Education' on July 23, 2016, from 9-4 at First United Methodist Church in Round Rock. Seems like this is about the most central and accessible place to hold these things.
This is for new Presidents, Secretaries, (and there will be a break out session for them) and any other leaders in your club. There is an extensive agenda, as evidenced by the long time scheduled. This would also be great for Membership Chairs as well.
EVERY CLUB should plan to have someone attend this!
AND THEN....... Texas Oklahoma Convention in Allen, Texas, August 12-14, details and registration online. Make sure your delegates are registered! (We did a great job of having clubs represented at the Called Convention in Garland last month!
There will be a Board Meeting this coming Thursday Evening, July 21st at 5:30pm, held at Brookdale Senior Living Solutions.
