New member joins our Club
Last Thursday, Tim Tippett, who has been visiting our club for several weeks now, was approved as a new member by our Board of Directors and installed into full membership last Thursday. Pam Cook officially installed him, while Jeanne Balkman, who brought him stood with him. Tim has eagerly jumped right into the activities of our club, and is involved in just about every phase of our club as of this time. We welcome Tim and know that he will be a very energetic addition to our club.
Kiwanis Camp Cleanup huge success.
Our camp cleanup last Saturday was a big success. You can see the ones that came out to help mow, weed cut, rake, and whatever else needed to be done, not to mention the wonderful BBQ lunch (with all the trimmings). This picture was taken after the work was done and they were grateful for those benches to just relax. We had 12 members there, including some wives and children. Thanks to all who brought food and to Lon for bringing his BB Grill, for those who cooked the hamburgers and hot dogs, and those who brought all of the condiments that went with a fantastic cleanup lunch and cleanup.
Our Program for this coming Thursday
Randy Cook will be bringing the program this coming week. He will be bringing Scott Yarbrough. He owns the Yarbrough Agency Insurance and is an active member of the San Marcos community. Besides what he does at CTMC, he is also on the San Marcos Baptist Academy's Board of Trustees. He also serves on the board of the San Marcos Youth Baseball and Softball Association. This will be the topic of his program this week. To quote Scott, "My dad instilled in me the importance of giving back to our community through some kind of service. Our community gives a lot to us, and being involved in these organizations is one way I feel like I can give back."
His main topic will be dealing with the Youth Baseball and Softball Association, so let's have a great turnout for this coming Thursday.
Terrific Kids Award Ceremony
Remember the last award ceremony that DeZavala Elementary School had for their Terrific Kids, well another event is being planned for Friday, May 24th 2019, from 2-2:45pm. Randy & Pam Cook are hoping that 10-12 of our club members will participate in this important Kiwanis event. There will be parents and grandparents there, watching with great pride their son or daughter or grandchild receive a small token of appreciation donated by different businesses in San Marcos. Let's put it on our calendar and make a date to be there. The picture shows the last event that was held.

April 26, 1944 - - Federal troops seized the Chicago offices of Montgomery Ward and removed its chairman after his refusal to obey President Roosevelt's order to recognize a CIO union. The seizure ended when unions won an election to represent the company's workers.
April 27, 1865 - - On the Mississippi River, the worst steamship disaster in U.S. history occurred as an explosion aboard the Sultana killed nearly 2,000 passengers, mostly Union soldiers who had been prisoners of war and were returning home.
April 28, 1789 - - On board the British ship Bounty, Fletcher Christian led a mutiny against Captain William Bligh, setting him and 18 loyal crew members adrift in a 23-foot open boat. Bligh survived a 47 day voyage sailing over 3,600 miles before landing on a small island. Christian sailed the Bounty back to Tahiti, eventually settling on Pitcairn Island and burning the ship.
April 28, 1945 - - Twenty-three years of Fascist rule in Italy ended abruptly as Italian partisans shot former Dictator Benito Mussolini. Other leaders of the Fascist Party and friends off Mussolini were also killed along with his mistress, Clara Petacci. Their bodies were then hung upside down and pelted with stones by jeering crowds in Milan.
April 29, 1992 - - Riots erupted in Los Angeles following the announcement that a jury in Simi Valley California, had failed to convict four Los Angeles police officers accused in the videotaped beating of an African American man.
April 30, 1789 - - George Washington became the first U.S. President as he was administered the oath of office on the balcony of Federal Hall at the corner of Wall and Broad Streets in New York City.
May 1, 1707 - - Great Britain was formed from a union between England and Scotland. The union included Wales which had already been part of England since the 1500's. The United Kingdom today consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
May 2, 2001 - - U.S. Special Operations Forces killed Osama bin Laden during a raid on his secret compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The raid marked the culmination of a decade-long manhunt for the elusive leader of the al-Qaeda terrorist organization based in the Middle east. Bin Laden had ordered the coordinated aerial attacks of September 11, 2001, in which four American passenger jets were hijacked then crashed, killing nearly 3,000 persons. Two jets had struck and subsequently collapsed the 110 story Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York, while another struck the Pentagon building in Washington, D.C. A fourth jet also headed toward Washington had crashed into a field in Pennsylvania as passengers attempted to overpower the hijackers on board.
Have You Ever Heard the Phrase, "Drunk as a Fiddler"!
"Highly intoxicated; three sheets in the wind; squiffy; spifficated; tanked. It would be quite an achievement to be able to prove that the 'fiddler' in the case was Nero, who, somewhat shellacked himself at the time presumably, fiddled while Rome burned, during his reign back in the first century, but alas, this is just one of a variety of men of trades or position who, proverbially, or in fact, have been guzzlers. History of the Maryland State Flag
The state flag of Maryland was officially adopted in 1904. It is the only US state flag based on British heraldry (the coats off arms of noble families) The flag's design was based on the coat of arms adopted by George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore. The alternating yellow and black are from Lord Calvert's family shield, the red and white design is either from Calvert's maternal family, the Crosslands, or his wife's family, the Mynnes."
