"Round Table last Thursday morning, Sept 27, 2018"
There weren't too many at Roundtable Luncheon last Thursday morning, but we had a lot of fun and talked about all sorts of things - just like you do at Roundtable. Those present were Lon Shell, Doug Balkman, Randy Cook, Glen Rydl, Del Brown, Kelli Whigham, John Polk and Mary Polk. The picture was taken by our good & faithful waitress, Ashley at Grin's Restaurant.
The Installation was a huge success. We had over 40 there, the meal was delicious, the fellowship was tremendous, and as we have done for many years, we said 'well done and God Bless to one President, and said, Welcome and Good Luck to a new President.
Doug Balkman has done a great job over the past year as President, and Kelli Whigham is looking forward to a very productive new year as President.
Jimmie Scott, our banquet speaker kept us in high spirits as he told us about his life winding up with being President Emeritus of the San Marcos Academy.
Thanks to all who attended this year's Banquet - 42 including many spouses. It was truly a marvelous time together as a Kiwanis family should enjoy.
There were several who could not make the banquet and we missed. One such person was Gary Strunk, who was awarded 'Kiwanian of the Year' for all the hard work that he has done at our camp, with Ramp building, and as club sponsor of our High School Key Club. His award will be given to him at the next meeting

Charles Johnson will again be bringing a very interesting program - - Major Chris Baker, head of the Civil Air Patrol cadet program will be coming and tell about the CAP cadet training program. Civil Air Patrol, the longtime all volunteer U.S. Air Force auxilliary, is the newest member of the Air Force's Total Force, which consists of regular Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, along with Air Force retired military and civilian employees. CAP, in its Total Force role, operates of some 550 aircraft and performs about 90% of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 78 lives annually. CAP's 56,000 members nationwide also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. It's members additionally play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to more than 24,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet program.
What Do we Know about the History of our 52 state flags. Bear with me, I think it will be enlightening!....."Virginia"
"Virginia's official state flag was adopted in 1861. The flag has a deep blue background with a white circle in the center. In the center are the words 'VIRGINIA' and 'SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS' (Latin for 'thus always to tyrants').
Depicting the state's motto on the flag is the goddess Virtue (who is holding a sword and a spear), who has defeated a tyrant, who is lying on the ground, and is holding a chain and a scourge (a whip). Nearby is the tyrant's fallen crown. Virtue symbolizes Virginia and the tyrant symbolizes Britain. Red Virginia creepers and green leaves surround the scene. A white silk fringe is on the edge farthest from the flagstaff."
Big Events Coming Up in October and November!
Ok Kiwanians, and Friends of Kiwanis, hear up! The 5K October Dash Run is right on us. October 13, that's a week from this coming Saturday. It's not too late to sign up for it, By now, donations from sponsors should have come in. Remember the time to be out at San Marcos Toyota Parking Lot. If you want to wear costumes, that's OK. The race starts at 9:00am Kiwanians should be there early enough to get everything ready to go by that time.
The other big event that is just around the corner in November is the Veteran's Day Parade. Since Veteran's Day falls on a Sunday, the parade will be held on Saturday, November 10th, beginning at 10am. Remember we need help in putting together our float. More information later on.

September 29, 1789 - - Congress created the United States Army, consisting of 1,000 enlisted men and officers.
September 30, 1938 - - British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain returned to England declaring there would be 'peace in our time,' after signing the Munich Pact with Adolf Hitler. The Pact ceded the Czechoslovakian Sudetenland to the Nazis. Chamberlain claimed the agreement meant peace, however, Hitler seized all of Czechoslovakia in March of 1939.
October 1, 1949 - - The People's Republic of China was founded with Mao Zedong as Chairman.
October 2, 1975 - - Japanese Emperor Hirohito made his first-ever visit to the White House.
October 3, 1932 - - Iraq gained independence from Britain and joined the League of Nations.
October 4, 1957 - - The Space Age began as the Russians launched the first satellite into orbit. Sputnik I weighed just 184 lbs, and transmitted a beeping radio signal for 21 days. The remarkable accomplishment by Soviet Russia sent a shockwave through the American political leadership resulting in U.S. efforts to be the first on the moon.
