 Our club is blessed by the willingness of each of our members to furnish a program to bring to our club each week. Programs dealing with all aspects of our community, our schools, our kids. There is a lot going on in our community and bringing special iprograms to our club meetings is one way in which we can keep in touch with what is going on. We have agreed for each club member to sign up and bring a program of their choice. Programs are very important for our club, but it also let's the community know that our Kiwanis club is alive and well. In order for the editor of your bulletin to put information regarding your program, please try and get him the information at least two weeks in advance, so that he can secure a picture and research information about the program. Our readers want to know what program is going on week by week. The Home page of our bulletin on the right side will list the names of those who have programs coming, and if possible what that program will be. |

Any time anyone goes into the hospital, we should always remember that person in prayer. John Polk, one of our very faithful Kiwanis member is needing to get some revision done on his hip. As you know, John is our new Division Lt. Governor and will be making many trips around the district. He has already had one operation on his hip, but more is needed. He will be going in for this revision on October 19, just 3 days before he is to bring a program to our club. Don't think he's going to make it, so another member has volunteered to introduce his program. Let's keep John in our prayers, and make it prayers for healing.

 Chad Burns, who is not only our faculty advisor for a Kiwanis Builder's Club at Doris Miller Middle School, but he is
also a member of our Noon Kiwanis Club. He is extending an invitation for all Veterans to come to Doris Miller Middle School on Wednesday, morning, November 11th, for a special celebration of Veteran's day. It will start at 9:30 am. We know there are quite a few veterans of past
wars, and if you are proud to be a veteran as I am, then you will want to attend this special event. Chad has a very successful Builder's Club going in the school, with the Administration behind him. So tell your friends who are veterans and really have a great turn out. Thanks Chad and the staff of Miller.

 Thank you Beverly Crumley for bringing our Hays County Judge, Bert Cobb to be our speaker last Thursday, Oct. 8th. He gave our club a whole lot of facts and figures, as to what is going on in Hays County, not just at the present time, but in the future. Judge Cobb was very emphatic about the fact that San Marcos has to be visionaires and look to the future, whether it be in roads, buildings, water conservation or what. He was very emphatic about the fact that we must plan for the future if our city is to survive. Things have definitly changed since he came to the county in 1979, specifically with regards to the roads. What was good back in the 50's just isn't going to cut it today. As far as the future is concerned, he said that we must plan not just for the future of our generation, bnut plan for the next generation. He sees the future of San Marcos as being bright, but it is going to take forward thinking and forward planning today. Many questions were asked of Judge Cobb and he fielded each of them with emphatic statements. He knows whereof he speaks. He has a great staff surrounded him and they are all of the same mind about being visionaries. Thank you Judge, and thank you Beverly for an excellent program.

These board meetings are very important. If we don't have a quorum, we can't get anything done, so please put the third Thursday of each month on your calendar and lets be able to do the work that our Board is supposed to do. The members of our new board is as follows:

  Only about 13 days left before the Great Pumpkin Dash. Do you know friends that are runners. Pass this information on to them. The Entry Fees are $25 for the 5K race through 10/23/15, then it's $35. There will be long sleeve T-shirts. There will be a Kids Fun Run for $10. You will not want to miss this coming program, Thursday, October 15.
This coming Thursday, McBride Wilson will be bringing Donald Lee, who has been with the San Marcos Police Department for 20 years. He is currently assigned as a Police K-9 Handler where he assists Patrol, Narcotics Task Force, and other agencies with K-9 related calls. The K-9 Units (officer + dog) have prove n to be a valuable asset in the daily operations of the department. The K-9 teams work 8 hour shifts during peak hours of service throughout the week, but they are available 24/7 by call out if necessary. The K-9 officers and their counterparts are frequently called upon to complete a variety of tasks, primarily during in-progress incidents encountered by patrol officers. Their services include criminal apprehension, building searches, area searches evidence detection, narcotics detection, tracking missing persons, tracking fleeing suspects, crowd control and for protecting the lives of their handlers and other law enforcement officers.
Donald has also been a Crisis Negotiator on the Hays County/SMPD Crisis Negotiation Team for approximately 12 years. He is also a Police firearm instructor, defensive tactics and force on force instructor. Outside of work, he is involved in a mentoring program at Phoenix Learning Center with high school students and serves on the Board of Directors for HCWC

HISTORICAL FACTS DURING THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 9TH TO OCTOBER 12TH.
October 9, 1970........Cambodia declared itself the Khmer Republic following the abolishment of the monarchy by the legislature.
October 10, 1973.......Spiro R. Agnew resigned the office of Vice President amid charges of income tax evasion on illegal payments allegedly received while he was governor of Maryland and after be became Vice President. He was later given a $10,000 fine and sentenced to serve three years probation. He was succeeded as Vice President by Gerald Ford, who went on to become President after the resignation of Richard M. Nixon.
October 11, 1521........King Henry VIII of England was given the title "Defender of the Faith" by Pope Leo X following the publication of the King's book against Martin Luther.
October 12, 1492........After a 33 day voyage, Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in the New World in the Bahamas. He named his first land signted as El Salvador, claiming it in the name of the Spanish Crown. Columbus was seeking a western sea route from Europe to Asia and believed he had found an island of the Indies. He thus called the first island natives he met, "Indians".
October 13, 1792........The cornerstone of the White house was laid by George Washington. the building located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, is three stories tall with over 100 rooms, and was designed by James Hoban. In November of 1800, President John Adams and his family moved in. the building was first known as the "Presidential Palace," but acquired the name "White House" about 10 years after its completion. It was burned by British troops in 1814, then reconstructed, refurbished and reoccupied in 1817.
October 14, 1912........Former President Theodore Roosevelt was shot by a fanatic while campaigning in Milwaukee. Roosevelt was saved by his thick overcoat, a glasses case and a folded speech in his breast pocket, all of which slowed the bullet. Although wounded, he insisted on making the speech with the bullet lodged in his chest, and did not go to hospital until the meeting ended. Roosevelt, a rugged outdoorsman, fully recovered in two weeks.
October 15, 1815.........Napoleon Bonaparte arrived on the Island of St. Helena beginning a British-imposed exile following his defeat at the battle of Waterloo.
