A NAVY MASTER CHIEF QUESTIONS A NEW SEAMAN
"The crusty Navy Master Chief noticed a new face and barked art him, 'Get over here! What's your name, sailor?' 'John,' the new seaman replied.
The crusty Master Chief barked back at the seaman, 'Look, I don't know what kind of bleeding-heart pansy stuff they're teaching sailors in boot camp these days, but I don't call anyone by his first name,' The chief scowled. 'It breeds familiarity, and that leads to a breakdown in authority. I refer to my sailors by their last names only; Smith, Jones, Baker, Jackson, whatever. And you are to refer to me as 'Master Chief.' 'Do I make myself clear?'
'Aye, Aye, Master Chief?' 'Now that we've got that straight, what's your last name?' The seaman sighed. 'Darling, My name is John Darling, Master Chief.'
'Okay, John, here's what I want you to do......'"

 Here are some Friendly Reminders of what's coming up in the future. Put these on your calendars, and remember every member of our club is expected to participate./
COMING UP!
1. Take note of when you are scheduled to bring a program. Your names are on the home page of the bulletin. Our Program Chairman, Doug Balkman has assigned each person a day during the months of January, February, and March. Take a look of when you are scheduled, and make follow up on your program prior to your date.
2. MARK FEBRUARY 25TH on your calendar.....THAT IS PANCAKE DAY AND SILENT AUCTION. Let's start getting ready with collecting auction items, and remember, every member is expected to be a part of this important event.
3. Another important date coming up is Moe's Better Half Race. Usually that falls on the first Sunday of March. Again, every member should take part in preparing for this club function.

WHAT IS GOING ON THIS COMING THURSDAY, JANUARY 7TH, 2016
Charles Johnson will be bringing David Smith, who since its inception in August of 1998, has been a part of the South Hays Volunteer Fire Department and served as the first paid full time chief since 2004.
But as of June of last year, he moved into the position of chief and executive director of the San Marcos Hays County EMS. He says that "EMS has made a lot of great advancements the last few years, and since David considers himself as a team player, he wanted to get involved and help move the department down the road.
At South Hays, David managed 72 to 76 mostly volunteer firefighters, while at EMS he will supervise 58 full time paid employees.
When David moved from a department whose primary responsibility was fighting fires to one that "is in many cases a person's first contact with healthcare in an emergency."
This will be our first program of the new year. Let's start the new year off right by having a full house this coming Thursday, January 7, 2016.

 What do we know about Numbers?
The number ONE implies that there exists but a single reality. It suggests absolute conformity. The number TWO represents separation, division and disunity. Two represents right & left, giving versus restraint, This reveals that the fundamental "two-ness" in the universe is male and female. When we thin k of the power of two we think of two things close enough to be counted together, but not so identical as to be duplicates. Our spouses are incredibly close to us, we can often complete their sentences. But they are also sufficiently different to make the connection meaningful. Ex: I might consult two books for guidance in repairing a plumbing problem. They will both be about the problem, and might both be helpful, but each book might tackle the project in a different way.
When we think about the power of TWO, it speaks to the fundamental duality which is so much a party of life, DAY/NIGHT, GOOD/EVIL, MAN/WOMAN, LIGHT/DARKNESS, PLUS/MINUS, HOT COLD.
If you look at the way our own human bodies are constructed, on each side of the torso is an arm and leg. Two arms, and two hands, and two legs, with two feet. Even internally, most of the organs come on doubles. The lungs, kidneys, and the inner chambers of the heart and the brain spread out on two sides. The head has two eyes, ears, and nostrils. Yet, all are rooted in the one, which brings us back to the FIRST LETTER...1. (Editor note: These articles hopefully will add a little something different to our bulletin, but if they don't appear to be going anywhere, we will stop them.

Glen Rydl, our club secretary is urging all members of our club to renew their Criminal Background Status. Every member must do this themselves, the club is not going to do it. CBI request is now online ONLY!

Click on Forms and Reports and scroll down to Background Checks The top two listings are for CBI's Click on the online button to access the form. Do not use any other form than this one.We must renew these checks every two years. They are no longer printing CBI cards. DON'T NEGLECT TO DO THIS! EVERY KIWANIS MEMBER MUST HAVE THIS DONE!

HISTORICAL FACTS FROM JANUARY 1 TO JANUARY 7
January 1, 1892..........Ellis Island in New York Harbor opened. Over 20 million new arrivals to America were processed until its closing in 1954.
January 2, ............The Russians surrendered to the Japanese after the Battle of Port Arthur during the Russian-Japanese War. A peace conference was later held in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with President Theodore Roosevelt serving as a mediator. In September of 1905, the Russians agreed to the Treaty of Portsmouth yielding Port Arthur and the Liaondong Peninsula to Japan. Russia also agreed to evacuate Manchuria and recognize Japan's interest in Korea.
January 3, 1946...........An Englishman known during World War II as "Lord Haw Haw" (William Joyce) was hanged for treason in London. Joyce had broadcast Nazi propaganda via radio from Germany to Britain during the war.
January 4, 1974..........President Richard Nixon rejected subpoenas from the Senate Watergate Committee seeking audio tapes and related documents.
January 5, 1925............Nellie Taylor Ross of Wyoming became the first female governor inaugurated in the United States.
January 6, 1066.............Harold, Earl of Wesson, was crowned King of England following the death of his brother-in law, Edward the Confessor. Harold II was England's last Anmglo Saxon king. In October of 1056, Harold met the invading army of William the Conqueror at Hastings and died on the field of battle.
January 7, 1989............Emperor Hirohihito of Japan died after a long illness. He had ruled for 62 years and was succeeded by his son, Crown Prince Akihito
