Greg Wurzbach, Wurstfest speaker
Rodney, Kristi and Kaycee in Steinholding Contest
Rodney, Wurstfest speaker

Rick started the meeting asking Glen to introduce his guest who was Kaycee from Angels for Elders. She helped Glen with getting to the meeting and was brave enough to enter the Steinholding contest during today's program.

REPORTS:
Rhonda reported on Butter Braid progress. It looks like sales brought a good profit to help out the Admin. account. Delivery is Nov. 14th. Please be sure to bring a cooler that day as the items are frozen and need to be kept frozen until baked.

Rick Reports:
He received good feedback on the Pumpkin Dash held Oct. 19th. Participants liked the race and the t-shirts designed specifically for the event. There were lots of volunteers both from Kiwanis, Key Club and Medical Explorers. Rick thanked Moe for setting up the course. There is not a final tally, yet.

October 29th is the Kissing Tree Vendor Fair. So far, Cheryl, Jesse and Billy have volunteered to help.

K Kids meets on Oct. 25th. Rick will be attending. Lon asked Rick to check on whether the teacher advisor received a flyer about the Veteran's Parade and Bicycle Brigade as the children in K Kids are the right age group to participate in the parade.

Rick reminded everyone to bring treats to the next meeting, if possible, for Trunk or Treat happening on Oct. 31st. Kristi will take them to the event.

Rick needs to locate decorations and pictures of Kiwanis veterans for the Veteran's Day float. Kelli said she knows where they are.

He reminded everyone about the Kiwanis Interclub lunch in Nov. Be sure to RSVP. More info is in the "Events" section.

On Nov. 11, there is a free Human Trafficking workshop at the Owen Goodnight Middle School from 7:00 -8:30 sponsored by the Rotary Club and Texas State U. Rotoract Club.

Planning for the annual Pancake Day happening on Dec. 21st is moving along well. Veronica designed a flyer; Kristin is doing the ad placements; Marilyn is working on banners and Penny is working on inventory to know what we need to order.

Kristi reported on the Key Club. She said they enjoyed helping with the Pumpkin Dash race and are planning on being at "Trunk of Treat" on Halloween. The club wants to collect old Halloween costumes to give to children who cannot afford one. If you have any children, grandchildren or great grandchildren who have outgrown a costume that needs a new home, please consider donating it.
Key Club members are interested in being in the Veteran's Day parade. So good to see these club members getting so involved in Kiwanis and community events. Kristi is doing a great job with promoting their participation.

PROGRAM:
Greg Wurzbach and Rodney, both dressed in traditional lederhosen, gave a very lively and fun presentation about Wurstfest in New Braunfels. He gave a brief history of the original Oktoberfest which started in Munich, Germany in 1810. It was a celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria, who later became King Louis I and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Over the years besides much beer drinking and food, there are parades, horseracing, games, dancing and music. Although it began in October, due to the weather in the Munich area, it was moved to September. There are Oktoberfests held around the world with Brazil having the second largest one.

Fast forward to 1961 and changing locations. Wurtsfest was started by Ed Grist, a meat inspector in New Braunfels, who wanted to honor sausage with a festival. Just like Wurstfest the festival evolved into music, dancing including the beer barrel polka and lots and lots of beer and food. A great history can be found at https://wurstfest.com/history/

Greg showed the traditional men's Bavarian hat covered with hatpins and the chin hair of a goat as seen in the photo. They brought an assortment of stoneware steins with lids to keep the flies out of the beer.

A main contest at these events is called Steinholding. Kristi and Kaycee volunteered to compete by seeing who could hold a stein filled with water (beer at an actual fest) the longest. Kristi won. Kaycee was just happy to participate as she said her grandfather is German. She sent photos to him of her slightly grimacing while competing.
