Willie and Felicia's granddaughter Natalyn came to the meeting today. She did some most impressive singing leading our opening patriotic song with Luanne.
Rick read a "Thank you" note from Penny who thanked the club for the floral arrangement that was given to her husband Steve's funeral.
He also reminded everyone that Pam Cook's viewing is Friday, May 30th, at the Pennington Funeral Home and funeral services for her are on Satuday at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with a reception at 11:30 a.m.
REPORTS:
Good Citizens Camp went well this week. The upcoming week for camp has been filling up with new campers. Hopefully there will be less rain so less mud although the river finally has water again. Try to get a visit in sometime this coming week. The kids are amazing, the speakers relate well with them and many of the topics covered can be helpful for anyone.
Many members brought diapers and wipes to contribute to the Hays County Child Protective Services organization to help out with their diaper drive. Thank you to all who participated.
Rick said June 1st is the election deadline for any new officers needed for the new year. Penny has agreed to be the new Secretary. Yay! She will be great. We still need a President and two board members. We have so much momentum going with new events. We need officers to keep the club going. Rick said he would consider continuing another year but he desperately needs to lighten the overall load. He needs someone to take over managing the Flag Program. Please be thinking how you can help out. If everyone volunteers in some capacity, we can keep all the good work going without it falling to a few and espcially to lighten the load for the president who already has much to do.
PROGRAM:
Debby Butler, the manager of the LBJ Museum on the San Marcos Square, gave an in-depth talk about Lady Bird Johnson. Although the museum is about LBJ, Debby focused on his wife Claudia Taylor. In infancy, her nursemaid Alice Tittle said she was "pretty as a ladybird." The name stayed with her the rest of her life. Although she was quite shy as a child, she went on to make campaign speeches for John F. Kennedy and LBJ and became an advocate for many causes. With part of her inheritance, she purchased Austin radio station KTBC in 1943 and a television station in 1952. She was president of the LBJ Holding Company which became worth $150 million. Her accomplishments were many not the least of which is the promotion of the "Highway Beautification Act." She was also a strong advocate of the "Head Start Program.
Lon shared a personal story about when he was still a professor at Texas State Univ. There was a display of antique tractors. Lon brought his 1935 John Deere and had the honor of pulling Ladybird, who sat on a haybale on a trailer, up a hill to the event. He worried the whole time about the tractor stalling out and having to figure out how to get this esteemed guest the rest of the way. Luckily, there were no problems.
After hearing Debby's talk, I did a little research on Ladybird. There is even more about her life and accomplishments that Debby was not able to tell due to time constraints. I highly recommend reading a biography about her if you are interested in knowing more.
