One of Our Club members issued a challenge to the editor that he was pretty good at guessing all sort of facts about movies, especially John Wayne Movies, so I took him up on the challenge, so here goes! (The answers will be hidden somewhere in this issue. Look carefully, the print will be small!

Our Program from last Week, May 4th, 2017
Lt. Jeri Skrocki , from the Hays County Sheriff's office, gave a very thorough runthrough of the Standard Response Protocol. She and Deputy Sheriff Steve Traeger are both instigational in carrying out the various procedures that can occur within our County School System. Some of her thoughts indicated that a critical ingredient in a safe school setting is the uniform classroom response to an incident in school. Weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by school and district administration and staff.
She said that SRP is Action based. The Standard Response Protocol is based not on individual scenarios but on the response to any given scenario.
Some responses she referred to were 'Lockout' (Secure the Perimeter in order to safeguard students and staff within the building. 'Lockdown' is followed by "Locks, Light Out of Sight" is followed by the protocol used to secure certain rooms and keep students quiet and in place.
'Evacuate' is always followed by a location, and is used to move students and staff from one location to a different location in or out of the building. 'Shelter' is always followed by a type and a method and is the protocol for group and self protection.
We are so encouraged about our school's safety by knowing that The Standard Response Protocol is in place and working in our County.
It's that time again and we need about 10 club members to come over to DeZavala Elementary School, this coming Friday, May 12, signing in at the office about 1:45pm and then going to the cafeteria by 2pm where we will see the new Terrific Kids and hand out 'goodies' that have been donated by our community. Your presence is very important! The picture is from the last time, and we had more than enough, better to have too many than not enough. Thanks to you who give that 'little extra' for our club and our Kids.

This is a real privilege and a real treat. President Tracy has set up all of the details, and our club will be doing the serving, and preparation of the meal. The main entrée will be 'Creamy Chicken Ritz Casserole', with salad, dessert, and drink. All for $8.00. If you have never eaten at the Cock House, at the corner of C.M. Allen and Hopkins, you are in for a real treat. Since we are not having a meeting this coming Thursday and you haven't had a chance to sign up to help, give Tracy a call.
May 5, 1893: The Wall Street Crash of 1893 began as stock prices fell dramatically. By the end of the year, 600 banks closed and several big railroads were in receivership. Another 15,000 businesses went bankrupt amid 20% unemployment. It was the worst economic crisis in U.S. history up to that time.
May 6,1527: The Renaissance ended with the Sack of Rome by German troops as part of an ongoing con conflict between the Hapsburg Empire and the French Monarchy. German troops killed over 4,000 Romans, imprisoned the Pope, and looted works of art and libraries. An entire year passed before could be restored in Rome.
May 7, 1954: The French Indochina War ended with the fall of Dien Bien Phu, in a stunning victory by the Vietnamese over French colonial forces in northern Vietnam. The country was then divided in half at the 17th parallel with South Vietnam created in 1955.
May 8, 1942; During World War II in the Pacific, the Battle of the Coral Sea began in which Japan would suffer its first defeat of the war. The battle fought off New Guinea, marked the first time in history that two opposing naval forces fought by only using aircraft without the opposing ships ever sighting each other.
May 9, 1862; During the American Civil War, General David Hunter, Union commander of the Department of the South, issued orders freeing the slaves in South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia. He did so without congressional or presidential approval. The orders were contramanded by President Abraham Lincoln ten days later.
May 10, 1994: A riot erupted outside the Astor Place Opera House in New York as British actor William Charles Macready performed inside. Angry crowds revolted against dress requirements for admission and against Macready's public statements on the vulgarity of American life. The mob then shattered theater windows. Troops were called out and ordered to fire, killing 22 and wounding 26.
May 11, 1862: To prevent its capture by Union forces advancing in Virginia, the Confederate Ironclad Merrimac was destroyed by the Confederate Navy. In March, the Merrimac had fought the Union Ironclad Monitor to a draw. Naval warfare was thus changed forever making making wooden ships obsolete.

Oneonta Gorge, on the American State of Oregon
The Oneonta Gorge is a scenic giorge located in the Columbia River Gorge area of the American state of Oregon. The U.S. Forest Service has designated it as a botanical area because of the ( #4.....Davy Crockett) unique aquatic and woodland plants that grow there. Exposed walls of 25 million year old basalt are home to a wide variety of ferns, mosses, hepatics and lichens. many of which grow only in the Columbia River Gorge.
Oneonta Gorge has been described as "one of the true dramatic chasms in the state".
There are four major waterfalls on the Oneonta Creek as it runs through the gorge. Middle Oneonta Falls can be seen clearly from a footpath and is very often mistaken for the upper or lower falls. The lower gorge has been preserved as a natural habitat, so there is no boardwalk or footpath through it as such. The Lower Oneonta Falls can only be seen by walking upstream from the creek's outlet at the Historic Columbia River Highway. To get to a vantage point where the entire lower falls is visible can require wading through water that in some places can be chest-deep, depending on the season and the relative amount of snow-melt. The upper falls are (,,,,No. 5....Fort Apache) about 1 mile upstream from the middle falls and require scrambling up the creek or climbing down a canyon wall to view. The fourth falls which is "Triple Falls" can be seen from a vantage point on the upper trails in the canyon.
