"Leadership in Kiwanis"
" Until about 2000, the catchphrase, A Magazine for Community Leaders appeared on the cover of Kiwanis magazine. The catchphrase meant that:
a.........Community leaders join Kiwanis.
b.........Kiwanis members become community leaders.
c..........The editors of Kiwanis magazine are trying to flatter their readers into a good frame of mind before they open the cover.
d..........All of the above.
Whatever it means, Kiwanis has long offered its members many opportunities for leadership.
Consider the following facts:
* The average Kiwanis Club has 34 members.
* Most clubs Bylaws specify a minimum of
5 Officers
5 Directors and 7 Standing Committees, each of which must have a Chairperson.
In addition:
*Most clubs have bulletin editors (a position of influence - - - a form of leadership)
* Most clubs have special committees (e.g. Fund Raising, Public Relations, Interclubs etc.)\
And Kiwanis has a tradition of changing its top club leadership every year.
Putting it all together, 60% or more of the members of the average Kiwanis club have an elected or assigned leadership role at any given time. That's roughly equal to most club's average weekly Kiwanis meeting attendance! In other words, if you're not a leader in Kiwanis now, you will get your chance soon.

We had a happy winner with our Big Bucks drawing. Our newly elected president, Tracy Herman had the honor of having her name drawn. But she put it back in the jar to grow. I think it is up to $10 now. Maybe, maybe, maybe, I might be lucky.
New Member Gets her pin and badge.
Last Thursday. our newest member, Rhonda White received her official Kiwanis pin and Kiwanis badge by President Tracy Herman. She is now an official member and has already mumped right in on some of our activities, such as the Veterans Day Parade last Saturday. Welcome officially Rhonda!
Veteran's Day Parade was a huge success!
This year's Veteran's Day was just about as perfect as you could have gotten it. The weather was absolutely wonderful - no indication of any rain, just beautiful sunshine, and a wonderful, enthusiastic crowd that lined both sides of the parade route. Our club had a wonderful turnout of Kiwanis members to help decorate the float with new decorations that Kelli and others bought for this year.
Kiwanis members that were there were: Ted Breihan, Doug Balkman, Gary Strunk, Del Brown, Gary Nelson, Francis Mendez, Kelli Whigham, Rhonda White, James Collier, Pam Cook, Randy Cook (he was riding in another part of the parade), Frederick Case, Beverly Crunley, McBride Wilson (drove the tractor), John Polk, Rob Martin , Lon Shell , Jude Prather and Tracy Herman (who was riding on another float) Others connected with our members were (Phyllis Shell, Darrel White, Steve Whigham, Jean Balkman. If I have left anyone out, I'm sorry.
As we have done in past years, we had our usual Kid's Brigade on their bicycles, scooters etc. This year there were 42 kids. Also as we have done in the past, Academy Sports has donated two children's bicycles and helmets to be give away after the parade is over. This year, two wonderful kid's names were drawn and given two new bicycles. The boy who won the boy's bike was 'Adrian Tello' and the girl's bike was given to 'Estrella Con' (See photo above.) Estrella was riding a scooter in the parade, so she was very pleased to get the bike. Thank you Academy. and thanks to all the parents and friends that walked alongside the Kid's Brigade, and thanks to Jennifer Mach and her Park's & Recreation staff for furnishing the decorations for the bicycles and helping the children decorate their bicycles.
Time to Put Our Flags on Election Day
Since 40 flags were put up around the square last Saturday, our flags for this coming Tuesday (Election Day), may be a bit jumbled, so get to Ted's early enough to re-sort your flags. Thanks to Francis Mendez, Gary Nelson, Del Brown (He drove the truck) for putting up the flags and taking them down around the square on Saturday. Also thanks for those who who bought a lot of new decorations, also those that assembled the float on Friday morning, and those who followed the float back to the warehouse and disassembled it there. This is what Kiwanis is all about - - everyone working together gertting the job done.

Ted Breihan will be bringing the program this coming Thursday centering on the Future Farmers of America here in San Marcos.
FFA is a national youth organization which focuses on fostering and building skills such as personal growth, communication, leadership, responsibility, time and business management, dedication, and so much more. It strives to accomplish this through allowing high school students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with all aspects of agriculture; this includes livestock husbandry, horticulture and basic veterinary procedures.
Students are encouraged to participate in projects which include raising and showing livestock, growing and selling crops, breeding livestock, and community service activities.
