You know there's a real joy when someone's name is drawn out of our Big Bucks jar, and Gary Nelson was the lucky winner last week. It looks like he received around $6. I think I'm jinxed! Still no name drawn that has my name on it....O well what can I say, except 'Better luck next week.
What a Wonderful Program we had last Thursday.
Thanks Randy for bringing Ruben Becerra to be our program last week. It was awesome. Here's a man who is deeply involved in our downtown business. Not only is an owner of several stores himself, but he is deeply concerned in not only the present condition of our downtown businesses, but the future of them. He sees some new additions, and the renovations of some old existing conditions. I won't go into detail, because I would be doing a disservice to him in leaving things out. But I can say that our downtown area is all of our concerns, and the better it can be made safer and more convenient, the more that people will do business there. Thanks again Randy for bringing Ruben.
"OK, all Kiwanis Members. You all must be at the Noon meeting this coming Thursday, October 6, 2016! It's Important!
Our new President Tracy will be bringing the program this coming week, and it will involve everyone in the club. She is going to lay out her plans for the year. It's a brand new year with new ideas, polishing up old ideas, trying new things, but she will discuss with all of you the direction she would like to see taken.
We have 34 members in our club, but are only managing to get at the most 22-23. During the summer, we averaged about 15-18. But we have a whole brand new slate of officers and Board members and they are going to need all of our support. I know that some are not going to make it each week, but please try to make it. Our speakers deserve the best crowd we can muster. After all, all of us should be eating lunch every day, so why not get back on the band wagon and plan to eat it with your fellow Kiwanians. Be sure and be there this Thursday, and hear what President Tracy has in mind for the coming year.

Christopher Columbus is often portrayed as the first European to sail to the Americas. He is sometimes portrayed as the discoverer of the New World. However, this is controversial on many counts. There is evidence that the first Europeans to sail across the Atlantic were Viking explorers from Scandinavia. In addition, the land was already populated by indigenous peoples, who had discovered the Americas thousands of years before.
Columbus Day originated as a celebration of Italian-American heritage and was first held in San Francisco in 1869. The first state-wide celebration was held in Colorado in 1907. In 1937, Columbus Day became a holiday across the United States. Since 1971, it has been celebrated on the second Monday in October. The date on which Columbus arrived in the Americas is also celebrated as 'Day of the Race' in Latin America and some Latino communities in the USA. However, it is a controversial holiday in some countries and been re-named in others.
Columbus Day celebrations are controversial because the settlement of Europeans in the Americas led to the deaths of a very large proportion of the native people. It has been argued that this was a direct result of Columbus' actions. It is clear that the arrival of the European settlers led to the demise of a large proportion of the history and culture of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, It has also been argued that Columbus should not be honored for discovering North America, as he only went as far as some islands in the Caribbvean and never got as far as mainland America.

"NOTE! New Kiwanians join a Kiwanis CLUB, not Kiwanis INTERNATIONAL.
Most new members couldn't care less that their club is one of several clubs administratively collected into a unit known as a Division. They occasionally see a Kiwanian, identified as The Lt, Governor, who is honored with standing applause but, except for the polite deference, he or she seems pretty much like all of the other Kiwanians they've met. The Lt. Governor heads the Division and is the local representative of The Governor.
Several divisions are collectively organized into Districts, each headed by a Governor, Districts are sometimes divided along state boundaries. New York, Florida, and Ohio are all Kiwanis Districts. (Our District is the Texas-Oklahoma District). In less popu9lous areas, two or more states up up a division (like ours).Nevada and Hawaii are combined with California in the Cal-Nev-HA District. Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, Alaska and the Yukon territory (and even a little of Idaho and sliver of California) form the Pacific Northwest District, one of the larger Kiwanis districts (geographically speaking).
Kiwanis International is headed by a Board of Trustees which sets the policies of the entire organization. An Executive Director, answering to the Board of Trustees, heads an administrative staff of about 100 persons who provide an amazing array of services to support the administrative and service efforts of Kiwanis clubs in gthe world.

The New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetville, West Virginia is the second highest steel arch bridge in the country. It is the longest steel arch bridge in the world, measuring 1,700 feet. Every October, the bridge is closed for traffic on Bridge Day and is available for parachuting and bungee jumping (a 876 foot drop). 100,000 people each year are attracted to this event
