Celebrating K-Kids!  Go DeZavala Elementary!

San Marcos Kiwanis Club Newsletter, Feb. 5, 2026
REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1.  Birthdays:  Willie Garza, Luanne Johns, Penny Slavik, and James Collier will be celebrating birthdays during the month of February.  There will be a tentative dessert celebration of these birthdays on Feb. 19th.

2. Cottage Kitchen Cock House:  Luncheons, coordinated by the Heritage Guild, and prepared by various organizations in San Marcos, are held each first Thursday of the month from Feb.-May, and Aug.-Nov.  Kristi and Chase Dame attended the luncheon, this past Thursday, as representatives of our club.  It was suggested, by our president, Jennifer Richmond, that club members might consider taking turns, attending the luncheons, during our meeting time, as this can be considered a great form of outreach for our club!  Let Jennifer know if you would like to go on a given Thursday, as we will count you present, since you are representing the club. Meals are $10.00 a person and includes dessert.  Serving time is from 11:00-1:00, and no reservations are required.

3.  Kiwanis Programs:  There is a shortage of programs that are scheduled for the next couple of months to accompany our meeting time.  Penny Slavik passed out a list of suggested programs, and several members have put out the word to potential speakers.  She will bring additional copies for the upcoming meeting, for any members that would like to take them home and join in on the search.  Several potential programs are in the planning stages, but there are still a lot of empty spots.

4.  Cornhole Tournament and Picnic:  Jesse Ramos gave an updated report on the Cornhole Tournament and Picnic. He shared that Chick-Fil-A has agreed to provide 300 sandwiches for the picnic part.

Jesse will be helping with the Chamber of Commerce's Cornhole Tournament and has requested help from members of the Kiwanis Club.  This tournament will be held on March 13, 2026, at the Chamber of Commerce office, from 11-4pm.  Let Jesse know if you can help.

5.  K-Kids Week:  This week is K-Kids recognition and awards week.  Rick has reached out to Amanda at DeZavala Elementary, asking her how we can help, but he has not received any answer back, yet.

6.  McBride Wilson Kiwanis Camp:  Lon Shell reported that he has needed to go out several times to turn the water back on, after winterizing the camp, as scout troops are regularly using the property, even braving below freezing weather conditions.  Kelli Whigham is doing a great job of managing reservations.  Thank you, Kelli!

7.  Pancakes with Santa:  Mark your calendars!  Pancakes with Santa has been scheduled for Dec. 5, 2026.
Marrisa Lopez with Greater San Marcos Youth Council
Our program, this week, was presented by Marrisa Lopez, on the Greater San Marcos Youth Council (GSMYC) is a local non-profit organizations with a mission to shelter children and strengthen families.  The GSMYC was created in 1986 to provide shelter to maltreated children, while providing support services to families.  The main services that they provide is a Children's Shelter and FAYS programs.

The Children's Shelter is a residential shelter designed to house children, ages 2-17, where children can feel safe.  While at the shelter, all of the children's needs are met to include medical and dental services, counseling services, and educational services in the San Marcos public schools.  Church services and field trips are provided regularly, and if the child has special needs, including educational needs, the staff at the shelter provide these as well.

Housing at the Children's Shelter must be applied for and admittance needs to be approved, to further ensure each individual's safety.  The shelter has 16 beds, with an average stay of 90 days (foster home reunification must be in place), and an average age level of 7years old.

The FAYS Program is set up to help strengthen families, so that removal of the child does not need to occur.  FAYS stands for Family and Youth Success, and this program addresses family conflict and everyday struggles that families must face.  This program is available, free of charge to youth under the age of 18 and their families, and can provide counseling, parenting classes, and other services.

There are many opportunities available to volunteer with the GSMYC.  Examples of volunteer activities include going with children on field trips, participating in holiday events, mentoring , and providing transportation.  Other ways to help include donating food, clothing, personal hygiene donations, and monetary donations.
