Rick's first order of business was to induct our newest member Valerie Delgado. Jesse did the honors. Valerie was born and raised in San Marcos. She owns the residential and commercial cleaning service "Queens of Clean" and is involved with her church. Her hobbies include thrifting and antiquing. She is very happy to be a part of the club. She has already shown her energy and enthusiasm to volunteer by helping out before she officially became a member. Welcome to the club, Valerie!
REPORTS:
Jesse passed out a packet of information concerning getting sponsors for the cornhole tournament. Options for donating include financial donations, registering to play in the tournament and contributing $100 towards a raffle item that will be raffled off at the tournament. A list of businesses to approach is provided and there is a flyer with Sponsorship Opportunities and a sign up form. The event is Sunday, April 27th so time is of the essence to get funding.
Rick reported that he has picked up only two scholarship applications so far. He talked with Dr. Cunningham to see if more have been submitted.
He passed out Flag route lists to those who have routes. If you were not at the meeting and have a flag route, touch base with Rick.
Rick also reported that there is no news yet on whether our application for a $1000 grant has been approved.
Cheryl and Penny had success at the Kissing Tree Vendor Fair. They passed out around twelve buttons to attendees who are interested in coming to one of our lunch meetings and also had some people who signed up for more information. Thank you, ladies, for volunteering your time to do this outreach.
PROGRAM:
Marian and Henry Oles, owners of The Old Mill in San Marcos, gave a most interesting history of this 100 year old historical landmark that they purchased and started renovating in 1988. They wanted it for the headquarters of their company EPS Photographic and also to lease out spaces for other businesses.
The original structure was started in 1924 with a full, concrete basement (unusual in Texas) and orginally was to be three stories high. The purpose of the building was to be a cotton mill. A drought in 1925 and 1929 put that to an end. The next major use in 1939 was as a Wool Mill which was successful. One downfall was wool is 50% grease and poop according to Marian. The smell was so bad that very little home development occurred during that time in the area.
The Oles' showed a PowerPoint of before and after pictures for the renovation, including vintage "The San Marcos Record" articles from 1924 and 1939 They even converted a train Club car into a meeting space that can be rented. The Old Mill now has the historic plaque designation "Cen-Tex Wool Mill Histotic District." Check out oldmillproperties.com for more information and history of this significant part of San Marcos's landmark history.
