Last week's roundtable photos are to the right, their names were in last week's bulletin, but I failed to put in their pictures.
This last week's Roundtable was well attended and the photo is to the left. The Roundtable for December 29 included: Chester Banks, Del Brown, Randy Cook, Veronique Hahn, Charles Johnson, Rob Martin (after a long bout following surgery), Gary Nelson, Kelli Whigham, Rhonda White, Ted Breihan, Tracy Herman, John Polk and Glen Rydl. Roundtables are a lot of fun, very relaxing, no program, just talking about whatever you want to talk about. Thanks to all who showed up.

John Polk brings the program!
David Chandler was to have the program for this week, but he is in California and will present a program at a later date. In the meantime, John Polk got ahold of Bill Taylor, Administrator for the Upper San Marcos Water Shed, Reclamation & Flood Control District, to come and bring us up to date regarding our water situation.
The Upper San Marcos Watershed and Flood Control District was formed in 1971 and acts as a liaison between the effected landowners and the other sponsors, including the Soil and Water Conservation District, Hays County, the city of San Marcos and the NRCS. They own and protect the easements and insure that maintenance of the access, dams and spillways is performed in a timely manner. They also make sure the public is kept aware of the conservation and safety functions of the five dam projects.
You will not want to miss this program. Come and bring a friend.

The First Ticker-Tape Parade in America!"
The first New York ticker-tape parade was held on October 28, 1866 to honor the dedication of the Statue of Liberty. A record 5,438 tons of tape and confetti were thrown in the parade after.....in the parade after V-J Day in 1945. The ticker-tape parade remains a unique American experience.

What Makes Kiwanians Tick?
Why do Kiwanians work on behalf of Young Children?
Some insight was given by Abraham Maslow, a Brooklyn-born visionary of Russian Jewish parentage, whose metoric rise to fam illuminated the mid-Twentieth Century world of psychology. He listed in order of importance, the five basic needs of all humans. His "Hierarchy of Human needs" remains as cogent today as it did when Maslow formulated it half a century ago.
The order of Maslow's list is significant because each Need in the heirarcy is meaningful to people only if all of the preceding needs are also met.
The first human need, Survival, if not met, renders the other needs of little or no importance: self esteem, for example, is not an important consideration to a person who has just mistakenly entered a Los Angeles Free way via the off-ramp.
When Survival seems assured, Safety from lesser harm takes won great importance: these needs include shelter and clothing for protection against the elements, sufficient food to eat, and freedom from disease.
Belonging becomes important to persons to whom both Survival and Safety are not a serious concern. Belonging is not a need strongly felt by most Kiwanians although Belonging is what many Kiwanis clubs offer (often unsuccessfully) as the reason for new members to sign a membership application. (It usually doesn't work. In modern society, most people are looking for ways to decrease commitments and increase their discretionary time.) (More next week)
