What a time we had this last Thursday, April 2, when Marcella Jean Burleson was inducted into our club by Steve Furney, our Membership Chairman. John Polk was Marcella's sponsor, and Kelli Whigham will be her mentor. Marcella is married and her husband's name is Kyle. They both are members of the First United Methodist Church where Marcella sings in the choir. Kyle works for the Fountain People.They both live in San Marcos and we are sure that she will be a great asset to our club. Welcome Marcella.

"New member enrollment fees are as follows:....Kiwanis International - $50.00.......Texas Oklahoma District New Member lFees - Graduated from $26.50 for members joining in October to $3.00 for members joining in Sepgtember. New members will be expected to pay $40.00 of the total New Member Fees, with the San Marcos Kiwanis Club paying the balance of the total New Member Fees."
Last Thursday, Randy made available Flag Renewal sheets, so let's not forget to get them signed and the money into Randy, or give it to the president if Randy is not there. Make as many copies as you wish. Remember this money goes toward the Children's Summer Reading program in the publiclibrary.
Our program this coming week, Thursday, April 9th will be brought by Tracy Herman. She is bringing Connie Ulmer who will come speak to us regarding Medicare. Wasn't last week's program awesome? Moe Johnson brought Dr. Michelle Hamilton from Texas State. She gave an exciting personal narrative as to her personal experiences, being the mother of an autistic child. She led us through her own personal dark corridors of successes and failures with her son, and ways in which autism can affect every member of the family . It was heart-rendering at times listening to her describe the difficult times she had with her child not speaking, and then after speaking, doing strange and mysterious actions, just because he wanted to. One out lf 68 kids is living with some form of Autism. It is a very complex disorder that effects the child's development, and one that is generally evaluated by or around age 3. It is vastly more common to be discovered in boys versus girls, and there are a few types of Autism categorized on the spectrum varying from severe cases, to some kids that are incredibly high functioning. Thank you Moe and Michelle for enlightening us further on this disabling disease.

April 6, 1917........Following a vote by Congress approving a declaration of war, the U.S. entered World War I.
April 6, 1994.........The beginning of genocide in Rwanda as a plane carrying the presidents of Rwanda and Burundi was shot down. They had been meeting to discuss ways of ending ethnic rivalries between the Hutu and Tutsi tribes. After their deaths, Rwanda descended into chaos, resulting in genocidal conflict between the tribes. Over 500,000 persons were killed with two million fleeing the country.
April 8, 1974...........Baseball's Hanry "Hank" Aaron hit his 715th home run against the Los Angeles Dodgers, breaking Babe Ruth's record.
April 9, 1865............After over 500,000 American deaths, the Civil War effectively ended as General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant in the village of Appomattox Court House. The surrender occurred in the home of Wilmer McLeon. Terms of the surrender, written by General Grant, allowed Confederates to keep their horses and return home. Officers were allowed to keep their swords and side arms.
April 9, 1866.........Despite a veto by President Andrew Johnson, the Civil Rights Bill of 1866 was passed by Congress granting Afirican Americans rights and privileges of U.S. citizenship.
