Lon opened the meeting with recognition of our guests. They were Penny's husband Steve, Marilyn Bostick, Jesse's guest Ruth, Kelli's guest Sandy and Leydi and Della Dame. (Holly is back in school.)
REPORTS:
Jesse reported that the Back 2 School Bash on Aug. 10 and the event at R.O.C.K. were successful. He said his photo booth was well liked and everyone who went was very involved.
Rhonda brought a yummy dessert combination of cream cheese, pudding, marshmallows and oreos to celebrate August birthdays for Pam, Beverly, and Glen who turned 93. Thank you, Rhonda, once again for donating your time to make another delicious treat.
Rick announced our new intern Daija Bee who will be helping the club in various areas such as social media. She should be starting on Aug. 26th and be with us for a couple of months. The secretary Jennifer will make up a list of things for her to do. If any committee chairpersons need any help, let Jennifer know. Per Daija's resume, some of her strengths are strong interpersonal and communication skills and engaging with community members by providing support and resources to various age groups through her work as a Child Care Worker, Home Health Aide, and Caregiver in a Nursing Home.
Rick passed out copies of the current list of Committees for all members to look over. If you were not at the meeting, he also emailed it. He would like all members to let him know if you want to make any changes. You may email him or bring changes to the next meeting. It would also be helpful to let him know if you plan to continue with the same assignments.
Lon clarified that "Room charge" on our lunch bills includes the tip. Apparently there has been some confusion over this due to the way the charge is labeled.
Lon mentioned that Legion of Honor recipients have been determined for the Installation Banquet in Sept. They are Glen Rdyl, Gary Nelson, and Randy Cook.
We are also honoring those with perfect attendance for the year. Please let Jennifer know if you believe you have this. She has kept attendance records for regular meetings and board meetings. Participation in club events also qualifies but attendance was not always taken for those. Let her know what you have attended so far as events the club has put on if you missed quite a few regular meetings so she can add those to your total as make ups.
PROGRAM: Rick introduced Eric Willis, the developer for La Cima and Melissa Jewett who is the Partnership Marketing Consultant. Rick noted that La Cima rents 48 flags from our Flag Program and is the new sponsor for our 5K Pumpkin Dash event.
Eric began his talk noting that they have been building homes at La Cima in San Marcos for 5-6 years now. Currently 496 families are living there. They are beginning a new phase due to the continuing demand for new homes. The demographics right now are a little over 1/2 are over 55. Surprisingly, despite hearing how so many people are moving to Texas from Californis, he rarely sees that at this development. It takes about four years to get to the building stage. The current amenities are two pools, a Community Center, Clubhouse, Fitness Center, park, hiking trails and playgrounds. No golf course, though.
Eric is very motivated about making things happen with nonprofit organizations and community involvement. They are in partnership with the San Marcos Academy by giving towards scholarships. He also mentioned donating to Kiwanis, the Austin Sunshine Club and sponsorship of the Lion's Bluebonnet Club to name a few. They are planning to hold their first Pumpkin Patch this year. We look forward to more involvement with La Cima as oppportunities arise.
