Terrific Kids Day......Thursday May 24th
Here we have another great opportunity to show the Terrific Kids located at DeZavala Elementary School that we are behind them 100%. We need about 8-10 Kiwanis members to hand out tokens donated by our community to all the wonderful kids who have been selected by their teachers to be Terrific Kids. It will be this Thursday, May 24th at 2pm. Just sign in at the office by about 1:30-1:45, and come on down to the cafeteria area. Let's have a good turnout for this. After all, this is what Kiwanis is all about - KIDS!

Last Week's Program, May 17th
Last Week's program was a special treat. Four out of the five High School Seniors who graduated this year were each given $1000 scholarships from our club to assist them in their further academic achievements. Each one was asked to tell something about themselves and what their plans were now that they have their high school education behind them. Surprising enough three of the girls awarded were all going to further their education in the field of biology. One was going into nursing, and one boy (not present) going into mathematics.
From left to right in the photo were: Sandra Tapia (Tx State University in the field of nursing); Zehra Tombul (University of Texas, field of biology); Brianna Flores (former Key Club president) (Texas Lutheran University, field of biology); and Julia Scobee (A&M University in the field of biology). Missing was Brandon Alvarado who will be going to University of Texas in Austin in the field of mathematics. We wish them all good wishes and God speed as they advance to the next ladder rung of their future educational goals.

You've seen her picture in the San Marcos Daily Record each week, and this coming Thursday, Glen Rydl will be bringing Susan Smith once again to our club to tell us all of the new and neat things that are going on at our City Library. Susan is always bumbling over with the many opportunities our library affords our community. Let's have a great turnout for Glen and Linda
Grand Opening of Children's Park.
On Saturday, May 19th from 9am - 12 noon, San Marcos officially opened the new playscape at Children's Park at 205 S. CM Allen. The grand opened celebrated the completion of the new playscape, an accessible and inclusive place for children to play and exercise.
Among the various rides , etc., there is a picket fence at the park with individual and business names on the individual pickets to show the enthusiasm from the community to donate funds to add to the playscape. Our Kiwanis Club was one of those who donated funds as you can see by the picture to the left.

May 18, 1804 - - Napoleon Bonaparte became Emperor of France, snatching the crown from the hands of Pope Pius VII during the actual coronation and then crowning himself.
May 19, 1943 - - During World War II in Europe, Royal Air Force bombers successfully attacked dams in the German Ruhr Valley using innovative ball-shaped bouncing bombs that skipped along the water and exploded against the dams. The dams had provided drinking water for 4 million persons and supplied 75% of the electrical power for industry in the area.
May 20, 1862 - - President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act opening millions of acres of government owned land in the West to "homesteaders" who could acquire up to 160 acres by living on the land and cultivating it for five years, paying just $1.25 per acre.
May 21, 1881 - - The American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton. The organization today provides volunteer disaster relief in the U.S. and abroad. Community services include collecting and distributing donated blood, and teaching health and safety classes.
May 22, 1947 - - Congress approved the Truman Doctrine, assuring U.S. support for Greece and Turkey to prevent the spread of Communism.
May 23, 1846 - - The first American female attorney Arabella Mansfield was born near Burlington, Iowa. She was certified in 1869 as an attorney and admitted to the Iowa bar, but never practiced ;aw. Instead she chose a career as a college educator and administrator. She was also instrumental in the founding of the Iowa Suffrage Society in 1870.
May 24, 1881 - - A boating disaster occurred in Canada when Victoria, a small double-decked stern-wheeler carrying over 600 passengers on the Thames River keeled over then sank, killing 182 persons.

"Rub the Wrong Way!"
This saying means to deal with someone insensitively, whether on purpose or by accident. The term goes back to colonial times and wide oak-board floors. Once a week, servants had to wet-rub and then dry-rub these floors. Seems simple?" Well, if it wasn't done with the grain, it looked awful because streaks were made. To the owner, this was worse than not doing it at all! And a real embarrassment to any company that came. So a servant was called clumsy or inept by their employer. Today, the term means anyone (floors or not) who irritates others by a clumsy word or action.
Another version: To "Rub (someone) the wrong way" also refers to animals. Take a cat for instance: if you rub it along the way its fur grows (head to tail), it's fine, but if you rub it the wrong way (from tail to head), it gets extraordinarily angry and irritated.

Shoshone Falls is a waterfall on the Snake River in southern Idaho, United States, approximately 3 miles northeast of the city of Twin Falls. Sometimes called the :Niagara of the West, Shoshone Falls is 212 feet - 45 feet higher than Niagara Falls - - and flows over a rim nearly 1,000 feet wide.
Formed by catastrophic outburst flooding during the Pleistocene ice age about 14,000 years ago, Shoshone Falls marks the historical upper limit of fish migration (including salmon) in the Snake River, and was an important fishing and trading place for Native Americans.
The city of Twin Falls owns and operates a park overlooking the waterfall.
