Lon opened the meeting with recognition of all guests. Kristi brought the three Dame's, Holly, Leydi and Della again who were not quite so giggly this time. One of our speakers Tiffany Williams brought three young guests: Olivia, Brayden, and Adalyn. All made for an unusually young crowd for our regular meetings. We spanned single digits to nonagenarians age-wise.
REPORTS:
Lon reported that Rick is at the Annual Kiwanis District Convention in Tahlequah, OK. We will be getting a report from him at our next meeting.
Lon said Jennifer has been doing a great job on the newsletters.
Meal costs at Grin's for our lunches did go up starting at this meeting. There is a $5 minimum charge if no lunch is ordered. All lunches ordered from the Kiwanis menu are $15 with tip included.
PROGRAM:
Kelli introduced Tiffany Williams and Eli Verver of the San Marcos Police Officers' Assn. They brought up an awareness of a group Mano Amiga which originally was created to help immigrants but became politically motivated to tout social justice in the form of civil service reform. Unfortunately, the group was not honest in its rhetoric. It proposed a ballot initiative to repeal the civil service guidelines already in place through Chapter 143 of the Texas Local government Code which provides the highest of professional standards. The activist group wanted to initiate their own idea of civil service oversight by distortion of facts with attempts to gain access to all officers' interactions with the public. This would have removed protection for our police officers and firefighters causing the probability of losing officers and having less applicants. That then leads to less protection for the community. There is already a due process in place to handle cases. Mano Amiga is the same group that tried to get more liberal marijuana laws which were voted down. These days, more than ever it seems, it is always best to get as well informed as possible before signing petitions or voting on proposals. This presentation provided a clear example of that need and many thanks to Tiffany and Eli for providing us with this information.
