Francis Mendez's name was drawn for Big Bucks on November 20, but unfortunately he was teaching classes at the University. Sorry. Francis. The amount will be $10 this coming Thursday.
Our program for this coming Thursday, December 4th will be brought by Gary Nelson. His speaker will be Dr. Anthony Cedrone, MD. Dr. Cedrone received his medical degree from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. He served his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at North Shore University Hospital and was active on the Resident Committee Faculty Advisory Committee and Medicine Continuity Clinic Committee. He completed his fellowship in Cardiology from North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System in Manhasset, NY. His areas of special interest include structural heart disease. He is Board certified in Cardiovascular Diseases, Echocardiography, Nuclear Cardiography, Internal Medicine. When he is not working, he enjoys time with his family and playing golf. (Answer to A. Our club will be having our annual Christmas Luncheon on Thursday, December 11th at the San Marcos BBQ, located at 2601 Hunter Road. It has just been refurbished and serves excellent food. . It has a separate meeting room with tables to seat at least 80 persons. We have invited other members of the clubs in our Division, to join us and make it an Interclub The cost will be $8.25 plus tax, and you can pay at the counter. Since this is our Christmas luncheon, we are working on having appropriate Christmas entertainment. Plan on coming. We will be passing around a sheet for you to sign up at our meeting on December 4th, and how many you are bringing with you.(Answer to Riddle D.......Soap)
We are in dire need of Kiwanians to sign up to ring bells for Salvation Army. It goes on all through December, up to Christmas. There are five shifts a day, Monday through Saturday (No Sunday), and we only ring bells at Hobby Lobby. You can either ring outside the building, weather permitting, or you can take the bucket inside( no ringing allowed inside). Gary Strunk is the coordinator for Salvation Army for this year, and he needs help. You can contact him at garylastnamestrunk@yahoo.com which will allow you to sign up online. This is something our club does each year in keeping with what we stand for. If you wish to call Gary, his phone number is on VolunteerSpot. It's so easy to sign up. Do it by yourself or get someone to help you. It truly is for the Greatest Good!
K-Kids Information. Let's have a great turnout on Thursday, December 18 when Randy & Pam will bring the K-Kids as our program. Along with them will be several K-Kids, along with Kayla Cook, the faculty Advisor, and the School principal, Mr. Maresch. Also there may be two other advisors as well. The K-Kids program is a very important one from De-Zavala school, and we need to get more involved with them. There are plenty of good service projects out there, but we as Kiwanians should take more of an interest in what they are doing. We need to attend some of their meetings , which are being planned for the first & third Wenesdaymorning from 7:30-8:00 am. We should try and make some of those meetings.
We have some important things coming up, and we thought we ought to talk about it now...This one has to do with celebrating our International Kiwanis' 100th Birthday. The date is January 23-24, 2015. We will try and put articles in each week to prepare for our celebration. Your ideas are valuable, come help us plan, Your attendance at club meetings are important. You are important!. See the next article for how we got started.
Kiwanis as an organization originated in August 1914 in Detroit, Michigan from a conversation between Allen S. Browne and Joseph G. Prance.(top row, center) Browne's idea was to solicit business and professional men asking them if they would be interested in organizing a fraternal organization with a health benefit feature. Browne was compensated five dollars per new member that joined for his operating budget. Browne and Prance set out and recruited enough members to apply to the state for a "not for profit" status. The state approved the application on January 21,1915 and the Supreme Lodge Benevolent Order Brotherswas formed. The name was changed to Kiwanis a year later. The Kiwanis Club of Detroit is the original local club in Kiwanis. By 1927, the organization had more than 100,000 members.
Typical Welfare Activities....Free milk was provided for needy youngsters in school.....One year's Christmas activities, providing food, clothing, shoes, toys, ($290)...The club furnished clothing and bus fare home for a pair of runaways from another state....Shared with a Hispanic club ($150 each) the expense of sending a delinquent boy to a Methodist school in Laredo for one year....A list of members' names who might serve as "Big Brothers" was furnished the county judge.
Support of School and Related Activities....An audiometer was purchased for schools of the county ($400)...($75) was contributed annually to the expenses of a Science Fair in the local high School.....Arrangements were made for "Play Nights" for high school youth; chaperones were Kiwanians and wives.....Shared in expenses of three students to National Music Festival.....Provided for summer lunches for kindergarten for the underprivileged....Helped send the college Strutters to Washington to participate in President Johnson's inauguration....Supported the Hays County Farm Youth Show ($45)....Provided flags for a new school....Sponsored a 4H Rifle Club....Sponsored an annual track meet, provided medals, helped run it off...(Answer to B.
