UPCOMING PROGRAM FOR THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2015.
Andrew Gary will be providing the program for this coming Thursday, November 12. His speaker will be Clay DeStefano, Executive Director of the Price Center. Clay has been with us before, but now he has a new title. He will be the director of the Greater San Marcos Area Seniors Association, Inc. Actually he assumed this role back in April, and he is coming back to give us some updates. He was extremely helpful just recently with our Installation Banquet, did a marvelous job of providing our club with all kinds of service.
Clay is an 8 year resident of San Marcos and currently is overseeing the overall activities of the Price Center. As the operational entity of the Seniors Association, the Price Center's mission is to facilitate opportunities for social, cultural and intellectual activities across the generations for organizations and individuals of the broader San Marcos area.
DeStefano's primary function will be to take charge of the organizations developmental and support functions. In his own words, he said: "This is an opportunity I have been waiting for, and I am eager to take on these responsibilities." Let's have a great turnout for Clay;s return visit to our club.

 A NEW MEMBER JOINED OUR CLUB LAST THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5TH.
Once again, our Membership chairman, Steve Furney inducted a new member into our club. His name is Dan Langan, Dan is retired and has already gotten into the swing of things in our club. He has already participated in the Pumpkin Patch, and is eager to be involved in other activities of our club. Randall Grizzle is his sponsor, and as yet, a mentor has not been assigned. He will wear his new badge #45 this coming Thursday. If you know Dan, greet him and welcome him for having made this decision.

"WAS THAT A GOOD TRADE?"
"Freya was driving her Chevrolet Vega home in New Mexico when she saw an elderly Apache woman walking along the side of the road. She stopped the car and asked the woman if she would like a lift?
With a silent nod, the woman climbed into the car. Freya tried in vain to make conversation with the Apache woman. The old Apache looked closely at everything she saw, studying every little detail, until she noticed a red gift bag on the seat next to Freya.
'What's in the bag?' asked the old woman. 'It's a bottle of gin that I got for my husband.' The Apache woman was silent for another minute or two. Then speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder, she said, 'Good trade.'"

  A BIG DAY FOR VETERAN'S DAY, NOVEMBER 11TH.
Wednesday, November 11th is a important day and a busy day for our club and our community. It is Veteran's Day, an official time to recognize all of those veterans, past, present and future of our country.
Our club begins the morning at 7am, meeting at Ted's place to put out flags, and picking them up again in the afternoon. Then, right after we put the flags out, DeZavala Elementary School has invited everyone, especially veterans to join them for a Veteran's Appreciation event in the cafeteria, beginning at 8am. Remember, we have K-Kids and Terrific Kids there. Then, following that celebration, Chad Burns, our fellow Kiwanian and faculty sponsor of The Builder's Club at Doris Miller Middle School has invited everyone, especially veterans for a Veteran's Celebration in their Cafeteria, for a breakfast, starting at 9:30am, following by a Tribute to our Veterans. Let's turn out in great numbers for all three of these events.

LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM WAS ANOTHER SMASHING SUCCESS.
Thank you Kelli for bringing Abigail Gillfillan , Permit manager of the Planning and Development Department of the City of San Marcos. She was extremely knowledgeable about her subject. She said that the city had to ask themselves some basic questions, such as 'how does the city want to grow', 'and how and where do we want to grow, and where do we want to live'. She said that our city is broken up into various corridors such as a corridor that envisions land uses and intensities of development along major transportation networks across the City. Then there is the Highway Corridor for regional commercial and employment uses. Then there is a Conservation Corridor, which is a low intensity autocentric corridor with limited development and access. Then, the Commercial corridor is a high intensity walkable corridor appropriate for a mix of local residential and commercial uses. Typical corridor elements include two to five story buildings close to the street, wide sidewalks, separated bike facilities, street trees, and sidewalk cafes.
The Neighborhood corridor is a lower intensity walkable corridor predominantly residential uses with limited commercial. Typical corridor elements include buildings 1 to 3 stories moderately set back from the street, sidewalks, bifke facilities, and street trees. Then the final corridor is the Greenway Corridor, which is a mixed intensity green corridor located along rivers and streams or as connections between different intensity zones. Typical corridor elements include a mixture of uses and intensities with buildings fronting bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

HISTORICAL FACTS DURING THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 6TH TO NOVEMBER 12.
November 6, 1429 .....Henry VI was crowned King of England at age eight. He had acceded to the throne at the age of nine months, following the death of Charles VI.
November 7, 1962.......Richard Nixon told news reporters in Los Angeles"....just think how much you're going to be missing. You won't have Nixon to kick around any more, because, gentlemen, this is my last press conference." Nixon's statement came the day after he lost the election for California governor to incumbent Edmund G. Brown. In 1968, Nixon re-entered politics and won the presidency, defeating Hubert h. Humphrey. Re-elected in 1972, he resigned in 1974 during impeachment proceedings resulting from the Watergate scandal.
November 8, 1895.......X-Rays (electromagnetic rays) were discovered by Wurertzburg Roentgen at the University of Wuerzbujrg in Germany.
November 9, 1872.......The Great Boston Fire started in a dry goods warehouse, then spread rapidly in windy weather, destroying nearly 800 buildings. Damage was estimated at more than $75 million. The fire's bright red glare could been in the sky for nearly 100 miles.
November 10, 1775 ......The US Marine Corps was established as part of the U.S. Navy. It became a separate unit on July 11, 1789.
