OUR UPCOMING PROGRAM, THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 2015
We have an unusual double treat in store for tus this coming Thursday, June 18. Doug Balkman will be bringing Adam Owen, who is the Operations Manager for HEB's Retail Support Center. That is the huge complex out on Hunter Road that also includes the Warehouse where HEB distributes their groceries all over Texas, and maybe beyond. It is a double treat, because Adam says that a tour can be set up, perhaps next week sometime or a day that is convenient for us. It should be an exciting progsram, because I doubt if too many people, at least in San Marcos shop anywhere else except HEB. Hope to see a great crowd this coming Thursday. Bring a friend. They are always welcome.

Last Thursday, our Treasurer, Randy told us at our club meeting that all of the "Happy Dollars" we collect each week, plus all of the Big Bucks that people win and give back to the Eliminate Project, plus all of the small change that our K-Kids collected in the Baby Bottles, since we began donating this money to the Eliminate project, we have sent into the project a total of $742.00. This may not seem like a lot of money, but in the long run, consider that all of this money was freely given by adults and children alike. I think it is a grand gesture toward achieving our Model Club goal. Let's keep it up. By the way, the elementary K-Kids collected $143.15. We can do it. We can and MUST eliminate MNT. |

Even though the Garage Sale was not as good as last year, there were some great miracles from the rest of the club, On Thursday, June 11, a 
mention was made that we should find some way of donating sufficient funds in order to make a meaningful contribution to the Flood Relief, and with willing minds, hearts and $$ donation, our club was able to present a check for $1000.00 payable to The Salvation Army to help the flood victims, channeled through Gary Strunk, who is on the SA board. Thank you one and all, for what you have done in the name of good will for those families, adults & children whose lives were completely changed because of the flood,

Even though rain was forecast for Flag Day display (Flag Day was actually on Sunday, June 14), we had our usual faithful flag displayers show up at Ted's Monday morning, and put out 78 flags at various locations. "AFTER THE DISASTEROUS ONSLAUGHT OF RAIN, OUR CAMP IS SLOWLY GETTING BACK TO NORMAL.
It's going to be a long time before our camp will be like it was before, but Gary Strunk, our new camp coordinator went out there on day one, assessed the situation, which was bad, did several days of mopping up with the help of one or two others, but last Saturday, June 13, about 9 club members (Pam Cook, Randy Cook, Doug Balkman,Andrew Gary, Charles Johnson,Del Brown, John Polk, Gary Strunk and Gary Nelson went out with chain saws, weed wackers, wire cutters and spent the whole morning cutting down low hanging branches, stacking stumps to later burn, fixing the small riding lawnmower (Gary Nelson), fixing the water pump that had been submerged in almost 6 feet of water, got it running again (Doug Balkman & Gary Nelson), so we have water, made sure both toilets were operational (Pam & others), and in general spent the morning doing whatever was necessary to get the camp operational again. A new gate was purchased and put up, 4 new picnic tables were put together to replace the ones that had been lost, in general doing clean up. Thanks to those who came out, but it's going to take several more club togetherness so be ready when the call comes.

 HISTORICAL EVENTS THAT HAPPENING DURING THE WEEK OF JUNE 12 - JUNE 19TH
June 12, 1898......The Phillipines declared their independence from Spain. The islands were named after King Philip II. Once freed from Spain, the islands were then invaded and occupied by U.S. Forces. They became an American colony and remained so until after World War II.
June 13, 1966......The U.S. Supreme Court ruled (5-4) in the case of Miranda v. Arizona that an accused person must be apprised of certain rights before police questioning including the right to remain silent, the right to know that anything said can be used against the individual in court, and the right to have a defense attorney present during interrogation. American police officers now routinely read prisoners their 'Miranda (constitutional;) rights before questioning.'
June 14, 1777.....John Adams introduced a resolution before Congress mandating a United States flag, stating "....that the flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternating red and white, that the union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation." This anniversary is celebrated each year in the U.S. as Flag Day.
June 15, 1215.......King John set his seal to Magna Carta, the first charter of British liberties, guaranteeing basic rights that have since become the foundation of modern democracies around the world.
June 16, 1963......Valentina Tereshkova, 26, became the first woman in space as her Soviet spacecraft, Vostok 6, took off from the Tyurantam launch site. She manually controlled the spacecraft completing 48 orbits in 71 hours before landing safely.
June 17, 1972......Following a seemingly routine burglary, five men were arrested at the National Democratic Headquarters in the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C.. However, subsequent investigations revealed the burglars were actually agents hired by the Committee for the Re-election of President Richard Nixon. A long chain 9f events then followed in which the president and top aides became involved in an extensive cover-up of this and other White House sanctioned illegal activities, eventually leading to the resignation of President Nixon on August 9, 1974.
June 18, 1812........After much debate, the U.S. Senate voted 19 to 13 in favor of a declaration of war against Great Britain, prompted by Britain's violation of America's rights on the high seas and British incitement of Indian warfare on the Western frontier. The next day, President James Madison officially proclaimed the U.S. to be in a state of war. The War of 1812 lasted over two years and ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent in Belgium on December 24, 1814.
