January 12, 1932 - - Hattie W. Caraway, a Democrat from Arkansas, was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill the term of her deceased husband. Later in the year, she became the first woman elected to the Senate.
January 13, 1935 - - The population of the Saar region bordering France and Germany voted to incorporation into Hitler's Reich. The 737 square-mile area with its valuable coal deposits had been under French control following Germany's defeat in World War I.
January 14-23 - - President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill met at Casablanca in Morocco to work on strategy during World War II. At the conclusion of the conference, Roosevelt and Churchill held a joint news conference at which Roosevelt surprisingly annou8nced that peace would come "by the total elimination of German -Japanese war power. That means the unconditional surrender of Germany, Italy and Japan."
January 15, 69 A.D. - - Roman Emperor Serviuis Sulpicus Galba was assassinated by the Praetorian guard in the Roman forum. He had succeeded Emperor Nero.
January 16, 1547 - - Ivan the Terrible had himself officially crowned as the first Russian Czar, although he had already ruled Russia since 1533. His reign lasted until 1584 and brought much needed reforms including a new legal code and cultural development. However, during reign he instituted a campaign of terror against the Russian nobility and had over 3,000 persons put to death. He also killed his own son during a fit of rage.
January 17, 1966 - - A Hydrogen bomb accident occurred over Palomares, Spain, as an American B-52 jet collided with its refueling plane. Eight crewmen were killed and the bomber released it's H-bomb into the Atlantic.
January 18, 1966 - - Robert Clifton Weaver was sworn in as the first African American cabinet member in U.S. History, becoming President Lyndon B. Johnson's Secretary of Housing and Rural Development.

Well we had a winner last Thursday, and it was a hefty one for Big Bucks, and McBride Wilson's name was drawn......but........he didn't have his pin on. Rotten luck McBride, but you've won before and you will win again!
Another Ramp was built.....!
And still our club is participating in building handicap ramps. This ramp was built on Friday, January 12, 2018 for Victoria Espinosa, 213 South Fork Rd, San Marcos, TX. It was a 40 ' ramp including the tail. It included a skirting of 32 feet and 4 gallons of non-skid/primer.
This was for a 47 year old lady who was being brought home in October after back surgery. Family was lifting her up the steps and she was dropped and had to return to the Hospital for another 90 days of rehab and medical treatments. She came home 2 weeks after Christmas and the ramp was completed in time for her follow-up doctor's visit.
Those on the building team (and they call themselves the Pacemakers) was Gary Nelson, Gary Strunk, Doug Balkman, Bill Stich and John Harrison.
Flags Displayed on Martin Luther King Day
Well the weather was super, no rain, a little cold, but 13 stalwart Kiwanians braved the weather and put up 8 routes of flags on Martin Luther King Day, this morning, Nov.15.
Those who put up and will take down this afternoon were Glen Rydl, Francis Mendez, Randy Cook, Randal Grizzle and Gary Nelson, Del Brown and Frederick Case, John kPolk and Lon Shell, Doug Balkman, James Collier, Charles Johnson and Ted Breihan."
Thanks to all of you. Keep in mind where the money goes for putting up flags - - the Children's Summer Reading Program at the Public Library.
Last Week's Program, .......Mike Jones, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for Hays County.
Charles Johnson brought a man that he has been trying to get for some time, and believe you me, he was worth waiting for. He began by asking our club if we were prepared for any kind of disaster in which we might have to leave the safety of our homes. He stated that preparation is Key to Success, He said that surviving a natural disaster, man-made hazard or any other emergency depends on us and our family to have a strategy to evaluate and a shelter-in-place plan. Each of us would have the tools and plans in place to take care of ourselves and our family for at least 72 hours.
He asked our club certain question as to whether we were prepared for such disasters, and I'm sorry to say, most of us were not.
Every family should put together an emergency kit, with such things as non-perishable foods, water, kradio, extra batteries, first aid kit, flares, whistle, clear trash bags, towelettes. Multi tool pliers, knife, can opener, important family documents, cell phone and charger, local area map, personal medications for a 30 day supply, toiletries, pet carrier if you have pets, food and water for them, Sleeping bag, blankets, space blanket, extra clothing and cash/travelers checks etc.
He also said that everyone should create a shelter-in-place, and to create an evacuation plan. Don't wait until a tragedy actually takes place, to get ready, but get ready to carry out your plan NOW? NOW THAT'S GOOD ADVICE!!

America the Beautiful....'Pewit's Nest State Natural Area, Wisconsin'
This beautiful portion of our state of Wisconsin is a nature reserve of gorgeous views and experiences that includes a deep gorge formed during the retreat of the last glacier. Pewit's Nest is outside Baraboo in Sauk County. At one time a waterwheel and mill were located on the site and an individual lived in the solid sandstone. The name of the site was a result of early settlers calling it "Peewit's Nest' after the abode, ten feet above a deep pool of water, resembling the nest of a 'phoebe' (or peewit, and earlier name for this bird).
When Glacial Lake Baraboo drained, 'Skillet Creek' cut a narrow canyon through the Cambrian sandstone, forming a number of potholes and waterfalls. The layers of Cambrian sandstone show that finer-grained sediment was laid down by the Cambian seas, Sandstones are found in layers. Forest cover includes red cedar, white pine, red pine, and yellow birch.
