Del Brown brought an excellent program last Thursday. He brought Deputy Sheriff Steve Traeger and Lt. Dennis Gutierrez to talk about the next Hays County Sheriff's Citizen's Academy. It will be held February 22, 2018 and it covers 13 weeks of classroom and hands on training for citizens to learn what our Sheriff's Department does for our community. Lt Gutierrez is also heading up this year's Brown Santa program which started on November 9th and will conclude on December 16 with the delivery of food and toys.
Deputy Traeger was very explicit in recommending the Citizen's Academy program. Several of our club members took application blanks after expressing a real interest in taking the course.
Randy Cook got a message from the K-Kids faculty sponsor, Brittany Bouzard Antonelli telling us that they will be holding a K-Kids meeting one Thursday a month usually in her classrooms at DeZavala Elementary School. Any Kiwanians that would like to sit in on these meetings are more than welcome.
The one for this month will be on Thursday afternoon, December 14 @ 1:30pm. We need to have 3-4 or more try to make these meeting.
This is your last announcement with regard to our annual Christmas Interclub. Don't forget that it is this coming Thursday, December 7, 2017 at Mamacita's on Aquarena Springs Road. We will begin eating at 12 noon, so come at least 15 minutes early to be seated. John Polk has worked hard at putting this annual festive get together, so bring you and your significant other with you and we will have a great time. You can order from the menu and each individual will be responsible for what they order. John has sent flyers out to all of the clubs in our Division, inviting them to come and be a part of this. San Marcos Kiwanis Board Notes.....November 30, 2017
President Balkman held this month's Board meeting with the following members in attendance: Doug Balkman,(President) Kelli Whigham,(President Elect) Glen Rydl,(Secretary) Charles Johnson, (Treasurer),Francis Mendez (Bd. Member), Gary Nelson (Board Member), Rhonda White (Board member), and Del Brown,(Bulletin Editor)
The minutes were read and approved. The Budget for 2017 was gone over, as well as the 2018 Budget. Both were approved. Also Charles gave a report on our investments. There was no new discussion on establishing a new club in Kyle. It was also announced that our current T/O Governor Patrick Schibi's visit to our area would occur on January 13, 2018 an will be held at Round Rock. There was discussion concerning possible future fundraisers. The subject of 'Bingo' was discussed, no decisions were made.
Since the next Board meeting falls on December 28th, it was decided to omit that meeting and hold the next board meeting on the 4th Thursday of January. The meeting was adjourned.

December 4, 1991 - - The last American hostasge held in Lebanon was released. Journalist Terry Anderson of the Associated Press had been kidnapped on March 16, 1985 and held for 2,454 days by Islamic Jihad (Hoilkty War) captors. He was one odf 15 Americans hweld hostage for periods ranging from two months to more than six years. Three of the hostages, William Bucklwey, Peter Kilburn and LTC William Higgins, were killed during their captivity. The others were released one or two at a time.
December 5, 1791 - - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died a pauper at age 35 in Vienna, Austria.. He had become seriously ill and rapidly declined, leading to speculation that he had been poisoned, although this was lately proved false. During his abvrief life, he created over 600 musical kcompositions and is widely considered one of the finest composers who ever lived.

America the Beautiful......Ave Marie Grotto, Alabama
The stone and concrete models are the work of Brother Joseph Zoetttl, a Benedictine monk of St. Bernard Abbey, who devoted some 50 years to the project, the last three decades (1932 -1961) almost without interruption. They incorporated discarded building supplies, bricks, marbles, tiles, pipes,sea shells, plastic animals, costume jewellery, toilet bowl floats and cold cream jars.
The display is strung out along a forested trail that winds down past several building clusters built into a steep hillside. Half of the hillside features buildings and scenes from the Holy Land. Also displayed are a number of secular buildings and the occasional pagan temple, including the Alamo Mission in San Antonio, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Spanish missions, German castles, South African shrines, Hansel and Gretel's Temple of the Fairies, and even the St. Bernard Abbey power station, where the monk worked shoveling coal.
Near the beginning of the path stands an imagined Tower of Babel, recalling the vainglorious attempt of humans to build a tower to the heavens.

"The smell in the dentist offices is a mixture of essential oils dentists frequently use in the course of treatment. The most prominent scent in the dentist's office, the one that makes you claim that all dentist offices smell alike, is probably eugenol, a colorless or pale liquid that is the essential chemical constituent of clove oil. Dentist combine solutions of clove oil or eugenol with a mixture of rosin and zinc oxide to prepare a protective pack after gum surgery or as a temporary cement. Eugenol is also used as an antiseptic, especially in root canal therapy, and as n anodyne (painkiller). This versatile liquid is also part of the mixture for temporary fillings, impression materials, and surgical dressings after periodontal work."
