Attention!!!! Since we didn't have a program on Thanksgiving, I just want to remind everyone that attends this coming Thursday, that in order for you to win at 'Big Bucks'. you must (1) Be present, (2) Be wearing your Kiwanis pin, not just your badge (3) Decide whether you are going to keep the amount in the jar, or put it back in to let it grow....maybe you will win it later on. It's fun! Oh, by the way, your editor has yet to win in his five years with the club, but I still try to attend every week, wear my pin or pins, and hope, hope, hope! This week may be the day!
Our Program for Thursday, November 30th.....Gary Nelson & Del Brown
Our program for November 30th (there's no meeting this coming Thursday due to Thanksgiving) will be Deputy Stephen Traeger from the Hay's County Sheriff's office who will be letting us all know about the Hays County Sheriff's Office Citizen's Sheriff's Academy. This program includes 13 weeks of instruction by the Sheriff's office. The next program will be starting in February.
The primary objective of the academy is to build a better understanding between citizen's and what our Sheriff Department does within our city and county.
"Another Handicap Ramp was Built!
Gary Nelson reports that another ramp was built for Ynosencia Camacho on November 18, 2017. It was a 40 foot ramp and there were a total of 20 persons making up the team. There were 10 members from Hearts-to-Heart Hospice, 2 members from San Marcos United Methodist Church; 3 members from the SMHS Key Club; San Marcos Kiwanis club, 2 members; 3 members from the Saw Marcos TxRamp Warehouse team.
Is It Almost Christmas Time Already...You bet it is, and that means that we are looking for volunteers to ring bells at Hobby Lobby. If you have done it before, you know the joy that comes from greeting people, thanking them for their donation, and handing out candy to the children. There are still spots on our calendar. We need you to sign up. Contact Gary & Nancy Strunk if you are able to help. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! Don't wait until the last minute, you'll be helping hundreds of needy families and you will also be representing our club. Call the Strunks and let them know that you are willing to fill a spot at Hobby Lobby.
"Thanksgiving Interclub Meets at Marble Falls"
Even though we didn't have as many attend this year's Thanksgiving Interclub over in Marble Falls, those of us who went enjoyed the trip over, the delicious Pork Loin meal with all of the trimmings, listen to the different clubs in attendance tell what's been happening in their clubs so far this year. President Doug Balkman share with about 5 other clubs present all the events that our Club has been involved in. Those from our club were John Polk, Kelli Whigham, Doug Balkman, Randy Cook and Del Brown. Del drove this time, squeezing four men into his Buick Encore. It wasn't bad at all.
One of the things we did was invite those present to our Christmas Interclub Party on December 7th.
"Christmas Interclub!
'Ho, Ho, Ho! You bet that season is coming up and will soon be on us! That means, among other things that our club is extending an invitation out to our other Division clubs to join us for our Christmas Interclub. It will be held this year over at Mamacita's on December 7th. The time will be verified in next week's bulletin. Be sure and give John Polk an accurate count of who is going and if you are bringing your significant other. It will be a joyous occasion, as all Christmas's should be. Put it on your calendar!

November 24, 1998 - - Britain's Queen Elizabeth opened a new session of Parliament by announcing a bill to do away with the centuries-old right of aristocrats to sit in the House of Lords. thereby taking membership and voting rights away from 759 Dukes, Earls and other hereditary nobles with titles dating as far back as the Middle Ages.
November 25, - - At the end of the Revolutionary War, the last British troops left New York City.
November 26, 1789 - - The first American holiday occurred, proclaimed by President George Washington to be Thanksgiving Day, a day of prayer and public thanksgiving in gratitude for the successful establishment of the new American republic.
November 27, 1701 - - Anders Celsius was born in Sweden. He invented the centigrade (Celsius) temperature scale commonly used in Europe.
November 28,_1520 - - Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan passed through the strait of Magellan located at the southern tip of South America, thus crossing from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific.
November 29. 1864 - - U.S. Army troops led by Colonel John Chivington attacked and killed at least 400 Cheyenne and Arapahoe Indians at Sand Creek, Colorado after they had already surrendered.
November 30, 1782 - - A provisional peace treaty was signed between Great Britain and the United States heralding the end of America's War of Independence. The final treaty was signed in Paris on September 3, 1783. It declared the U.S.".....to be free, sovereign and independent states...." and that the British Crown".....relinquishes all claims to the government propriety and territorial rights of the same, and every part thereof."
"Age of Imponderables"
1.......Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to do, write to them? Why don't they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the postmen can look for them while they deliver the mail?

"To Eat One's Hat!"
To eat crow; to eat humble pie; to assert one's readiness to consume such an unsavory mess if a certain event should not turn out as one predicts. The present form of the saying is first found in Charles Dickin's Pickwick Papers (1837): "If I knew as little of life as that, I'd eat my hat and swallow the buckle whole.'" Dickens could have coined the phrase, but it is more likely that it was merely his own adaptation of the older, 'I'll eat old Rowley's hat,' of the same general significance. Here 'old Rowley' referred to Charles II, a nickname given to him, it is said, from his favorite race horse, but cherished by his adherents from the long struggle against Oliver Cromwell, through punning connection with the familiar saying, 'a Rowley {Roland} for an Oliver.'"
"On the Road Again...."
"A guy driving a Yugo pulled up at a stop sign alongside a Rolls-Royce. The Yugo driver wound down his window and called across: 'Hey Buddy, that's nice car. You got a phone in your Rolls" I've got one in my Yugo.'
'As a matter of fact I do have a phone,' replied the Rolls driver nonchalantly.
The Yugo man went on, 'Have you got a fridge in your Rolls, because I've got one in the back seat of my Yugo?' 'Yes, I do have a refrigerator.'
'What about a TV"' Have you got a TV in your Rolls, because I've got one in the back of my Yugo.' 'Yes, of course I have a television set in my car,' replied the Rolls driver, irritated.
'How about a bed?' persisted the Yugo driver. 'Have you got a bed in your Rolls, because I've got one in the back of my Yugo?'
Annoyed that he didn't have a bed, the Rolls driver sped off and arranged to have one fitted that same day. The following morning, he sought out the Yugo, finally tracking it down to a side street where it was parked with all the windows steamed up. The Rolls driver stepped out of his car and banged on the door of the Yugo. There was no reply, so he banged again. Eventually the Yugo driver stuck his head out. His hair was soaking wet. The Rolls driver announced loftily: 'I now have a splendid bed in my Rolls.'
The Yugo driver glared back. 'You got me out of the shower to tell me that?'"
"How and Why Do Horses Sleep Standing Up?
"Horses have a unique system of interlocking ligaments and bones in their legs, which serves as a sling to suspend their body weight without strain while their muscles are completely relaxed. Thus, horses don't have to exert any energy consciously to remain standing - - their legs are locked in the proper position during sleep.
Most horses do most of their sleeping while standing, but patterns differ. Veterinarians say that it was not unusual for horses to stand continuously for as long as a month, or more. Because horses are heavy but have relatively fragile bones, lying in one position for a long time can cause muscle cramps.
While one can only speculate about why the horse's body evolved in this fashion, most experts believe that wild horses slept while standing for defensive purposes. They are much less vulnerable while stranding and much less apt to be caught by surprise than when lying down."

America the Beautiful.....Walt Disney World
The Walt Disney World Resort is an entertainment complex in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Florida, near Orlando and Kissimmee, Florida. It opened on October 1, 1971, the resort is owned and operated by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, a division of The Walt Disney Company. It was initially operated by Walt Disney World Company. The property covers 27,258 acres (43 suare miles) featuring four theme parks, two water parks, twenty seven themed resort hotels, nine nion-Disney hotels, several golf courses, a camping resort, and other entertainment venues, including the outdoor shopping center Disney Springs.
Designed to supplement Disneyland in Anaheim, California, which had opened in 1955, the complex was developed by W alt Disney in the 1960's. "The Florida Project", as it was known, was intended to present a distinct vision with its own diverse set of attractions. Walt Disney's original plans also called for the inclusion of an "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, a planned community intended to serve as a test bed for new city living innovations.
Toiday, Walt Disney World is the most visited vacation resosrt in the world, with an average annual attendance of over 52 million. The resort is the flagship destination of Disney's worldwide corporate enterprise, and has become a popular staple in American culture.
