Let us keep in our thoughts and prayers, the family of John Wesley Carson, age 86, who passed from this life to the next on June 13, 2017. He was a Kiwanis member and served as Secretary of our club. He was also very active in Gideon International for over 40 years. He was married to Barbara Darlene Webb for over 62 years. John had been a pharmacist for over 60 years, owned Hilburn's Pharmacy and B&J Pharmacy. He was a member of Calvary Baptist church, serving as a deacon, and Sunday School teacher.
Also let us keep in our prayers, the family of Michael (Mike) Edward Cowan, who passed from this life to the next on June 15, 2017. Mike was the father of our own club member, Beverly Crumley. Mike had many talents. He was an electrician, a cook, owner of Club 21 and Grumpy's Restaurant. He will be sorely missed.
Memorial Services will be held this coming Wednesday, June 21 at 10am at the Westover Baptist Church, 1310 Advance Street, San Marcos, TX.
LastWeek's Program!
Wow! Talk about keeping a crowd in suspense. Rob Martin did a absolutely splendid presentation titled, 'how to respond to unexpected opportunities', using his own life as a n example of expecting his life to go in one direction while in high school, only to wind up instead of being either a carpenter or a draftsman, to take opportunities as they came along, unexpected, but progressively. His life wound up first in AFROTC, getting a private pilot's license, and from that point on go from a small plane to a huge fuel tanker that provided fuel to other planes while still in the air.
Rob probably has piloted more different classes of aircraft than the average pilot. His presentation left a lasting impression on his fellow members that 'opportunities can come your way, and they can be positive or negative, and then the negative ones can turn around and be in your favor. In essence what he was saying, don't delete the negative opportunities, you never know where they may lead, namely to a lasting, positive opportunity. Thanks Rob, for sharing your life story with our club.

Lon Shell will bring the program this coming Thursday. Lon is quite knowledgeable about how our club got started, and he will be highlighting come events that maybe has been forgotten. We should have at our disposal and in our records as much of our history as possible, so come Thursday and add facts that you may know about our club, and share them along with Lon.
DON'T FORGET THAT THERE WILL BE A BOARD MEETING AT BROOKDALE SAN MARCOS NORTH, AT 5:30PM ON THIS THURSDAY EVENING, JUNE 22. ALL BOARD MEMBERS MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO BE PRESENT.
What's going on at Board Meeting?....(May 25, 2017)
1: Charles Johnson, Treasurer went over Financial Statement: Approved
2: Charles Handed out Final Report on Pancake Day and Silent Auction.
3: New Business:
a. Cottage Kitchen lunch was huge success.
b: Discussion on how the club could have some type of 'get together i.e. having evening meal at restaurant or some type cook out at our camp. Another suggestion having an early Sunday evening dinner at the Gris Mill in Gruen. Tracy will check on it.
c: Some discussion as to who should have access to member's information in Clubrunner.
d: Kelli mentioned that the 5K Pumpkin Dash is our next gig event.
e: Kiwanis Annual Awards Banquet was discussed. Board members present indicated that they would like to hold it again at Brookdale. Nothing final.
.Flag Day on Wednesday, June 14 was a great success.
Even though the day crept up on us, and with Randy's email to all the flag displayers, everything went very smoothly. Those who participated were: Frances Mendez, Glen Rydl, Randy Cook, Randal Grizzel, Gary Nelson, Del Brown, Frederick Case, Lon Shell, John Polk, Garry White, James Collier, Charles Johnson, Ted Breihan. If I have omitted anyone, please let me know.
Wylie United Methodist Youth build ramps for a Sr. Hi Youth Project
Gary Nelson has already told our club about the 10 ramps that were jointly built by Gary's team as well as the youth of Wylie United Methodist Church. Here is the letter that Wylie UMC sent back to Gary after completing the ramps.
"Gary: Many thanks to you and your Texas Ramp team for helping make our Sr. High youth mission trip a great experience! You did all the advance work that I normally have to do for these trips by visiting the sites, designing the ramps and creating a team packet for each ramp complete with directions to the site. As if that wasn't enough, your team stayed ahead of us by building the modules and stocking all of the lumber, blocks, hardware and other materials needed to complete each ramp. I believe I can speak for my whole group and say it was a great pleasure to work with you, Bill and the other members of your team who helped build the modules. Our Jr. High youth are looking forward to their upcoming trip to paint the ramps built last week by the older youth......"
June 16, 1963....Valentina Tereshkova, 26, became the first woman in space as her Soviet spacecraft, Vostok 6, took off from the Tyuratam launch site. She manually controlled the spacecraft completing 48 orbits in 71 hours before landing safely.
June 17, 1972....Following a seemingly routine burglary, five men were arrested at the National Democratic Headquarters in the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. However subsequent investigations revealed the burglars were actually agents hired by the Committee for the Re-election of President Richard Nixon. A long chain of events then followed in which the president and top aides became involved in an extensive cover-up of this and other White House sanctioned illegal activities, eventually leading to the resignation of President Nixon on August 9, 1974.
June 18, 1812.....After much debate, the U.S. Senate voted 19-13 in favor of a declaration of war against Great Britain, prompted buy Britain's violation of America's rights on the high seas and British incitement of Indian warfare on the Western frontier. The next day, President James Madison officially proclaimed the U.S. to be in a state of war. The war of 1812 lasted over two years and ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent in Belgium on December 24, 1814.
June 19, 1953....Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed by electrocution at Sing- Sing Prison in New York. They had been found guilty of providing information on the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union during 1944-45. They were the first U.S. civilians to be sentenced to death for espionage and were also the only married couple ever executed together in the U.S.
June 20, 1782....The U.S. Congress officially adopted the Great Seal of the United States of America.
June 21, 1964....Three white civil rights workers - James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner - left Meridian, Mississippi, at 9am, to investigate a church burning. They were expected back by 4pm. When they failed to return, a search was begun. Their murdered bodies were discovered on August 4th.
June 22, 1918....A Michigan Central Railroad troop train struck the rear of the Hagenbeck Wallace Circus train in Ivanhoe, Indiana. Fifty-three circus performers were killed. Of the circus animals not killed, most were maimed and had to be destroyed. The performers, of whom only three could be identified, were buried in a mass grave.

TO STRAIN AT A GNAT AND SWALLOW A CAMEL!
To make a fuss over trifles but accept great faults without complaint. This, as are many others, is a Biblical expression. It is found in Matthew 23: 24-26: "Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also."
But the translators of the King James Bible of 1611 were already familiar with this figure of speech. It had appeared in Lectures upon Jonas by Bishop John King, first printed in 1594, reprinted in 1599, in which the bishop himself said, "They have verified the olde proverb in stryning at gnats and swallowing downe camels."
"Listen a job is a job, we all need to find a way to put bread on the table don't we? To make a long story short I'm a telemarketer that's my job and that's what I do.

Whitaker Point in Arkansas!
It is the most photographed piece of rock in Arkansas. Whether you call it Hawksbill Crag, or, as most locals do, Whitaker Point, you've seen it on brochures, tour guides, advertisements and magazine covers.
Whitaker Point is accessible to almost anyone physically able to walk three miles and it's a very special place in southwestern Newton County that will enchant you no matter how many times you've seen the picture.
The walk under the canopy of a mature forest is significant because of huge old ash, walnut and oak trees and the rarer and impressive beech trees, which are interspersed with clouds of spring-blooming dogwood, autumn-bright black gums, and other smaller species. The forest floor has a carpet of mosses, ferns and wildflowers to identify and to enjoy. After making its way down a hill and across a creek, the trail winds along a bluff line with views of the headwaters area of the Buffalo National River and large boulders and bluffs. There is a high waterfall and, in wet weather, several smaller ones in places where the water pours down off the mountainside.
Unsurpassed in splendid beauty, this is the premier Ozarks hike. The surrounding mountains crowd close and the valleys are deep and narrow. There are lots of places with beautiful scenery but this squeezed-up, condensed, panoply of sights is intense in its grandeur.
