Program for this coming Thursday
The program for this coming Thursday will be presented by one of our own members, Veronique Hahn and Rebecca Bowman. As we know Veronique is quite well known for her sureallistic art, and book writings. She and Ms Bowman or going to share some of her art work and coordinating poetry. Veronique has exhibited her art work in several countries, such as France, Germany, Switzerland, Geneva and across the United States. Come to Kiwanis this week and get a most remarkable presentation.

--------John & Bonnie Ferguson, a long time member of our club, lost their oldest son, Keith from cancer. He was 57 years of age.
Displaying the Flag on the Fourth of July
Don't forget that this coming Wednesday is the 4th of July and time to get our flags distributed around the city. Be at Ted's at 7:00am to pick them up, and then pick them up by 5pm.

July 1st, 1863 - - Beginning of the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War!
July 2, 1964 - - President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race in public accommodations, publicly owned or operated facilities, employment and union membership and in voter registration. The Act allowed for cutoff of Federal funds in places where discrimination remained.
July 3, 1976 - - The raid on Entebbe airport in Uganda occurred as an Israeli commando unit rescued 103 hostages on a hijacked Air Force airliner. The jet had been on route from Tel Aviv to Paris when it was hijacked by pro-Palestinian guerrillas. Three hostages, seven hijackers and twenty Ugandan soldiers were killed during the rescue.
July 4, 1882 - - The 'Last Great Buffalo Hunt" began on Indian reservation lands near Hettinger, North Carolina as 2,000 Teton Sioux Indians in full hunting regalia killed about 5,000 buffalo. By this time, most of the estimated 60-75 million buffalo in America had been killed by white hunters who usually took the hides and left the meat to rot. By 1883, the last of the free-ranging buffalo were gone.
July 5, 1775 - - The Continental Congress adopted the Olive Branch expressing hope for a reconciliation with Britain, However, King George III refused even to look at the petition and instead issued a proclamation declaring the colonists to be in a state of open rebellion.

"Sweetheart"
In the old days the pumping action of the heart was considered to be the seat of a person's personality. Doctors knew little else about our circulatory system back then. So figurative words often were attached to the heart regarding people's personalities, like hard-hearted, soft hearted, heavy-hearted, light-hearted, and cold-hearted. Since love makes us all giddy, often our hearts beat faster. So the term 'swete hert' meant a fast beating heart. The term slowly grew into the term 'sweetheart' and is today referred to as someone who makes your heart throb."
America the Beautiful.....Alaska
1.....Outsiders first discovered Alaska in 1741 when Danish explorer Vitus Johassen Bering sighted it on a voyage from Siberia
2.....Russian whalers and fur traders on Kodiak Island established the first settlement in Alaska in 1784.
3.....In 1867 United States Secretary of State William H. Seward offered Russia $7,200,000, or two cents per acre for Alaska.
4.....On October 18, 1867 Alaska officially became the property of the United States. Many Americans called the purchase 'Seward's Folly'
5.....In 1943, Japan invaded the Aleutian Islands, which started the One Thousand Mile War, the first battle fought on American soil since the Civil War.
6.....Alaska officially became the 49th state on January 3, 1959.
7.....The state of Rhode Island could fit into Alaska 425 times.
8.....Most of America's salmon, crab, halibut and herring come from Alaska.
9.....Dog mushing is the official state sport. The Alaska Legislature adopted it in 1972.
10....Alaska is a geographical marvel. When a scale map of Alaska is superimposed on a map of the 48 lower states, Alaska extends from coast to coast.
11....Alaska is the United State's largest state and is over twice the size of Texas. Measuring from north to south, the state is approximately 1,400 miles long and measuring from east to west it is 2,700 miles wide.

America The Beautiful.... Ketchikan, Alaska
The southernmost city in Alaska is Ketchikan, a scenic destination known for being the first stop for many cruise ships that head north along the coast. Located at the foot of Deer Mountain, Ketchikan is home to a wide range of attractions. Visitors may want to stop in at the Totem Herit5age Center, the Tongass Historical Museum or the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center. The most scenic downtown stretch is historic Creek Street, which is only a short distance away from the cruise ship docks. Once a rowdy red-light district, these days Creek Street is home to a quieter class of establishment but still retains its delightful historic charm. Ketchikan is a hub for outdoor adventures, and there is no shortage of guided day tours to do things like salmon fishing, hiking through the Tongass National Forest or ziplining through the tree canopy.
