Our Program for this coming Thursday, December 5th
Kelly Layne will be bringing the program this coming Thursday. She will be bringing Jennifer Young from RED (Riding Equines for the Disabled) Arena. This program is a 501C3 non profit corporation that offers equine assisted activities and therapies. Their participants are individuals with various physical, social and emotional challenges such as Autism, Cancer, Cerebral Palsy, Developmental Delay, Down Syndrome, Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury. These conditions affect more than 500,000 people in the greater Austin/Texas Hill Country areas alone.
At RED Arena they strive to promote more inclusive opportunities for people with disabilities. There is nothing more amazing than the transformation of a rider as they are being physically strengthened, cognitively stimulated and emotionally empowered while on the back of one of these incredible therapy horses. Let's not miss this outstanding program this coming Thursday.

"It is with a great deal of sadness that one of our former members, Tracy Herman, who had been diagnosed with cancer has passed away at her home on November 19. 2019 Tracy was a fibrant member of our club, serving as president and was involved in a great deal of activities, both within our club and in our community. Our prayers go out to her husband, Gary and all of the residents of Brookdale North who thought of Tracy as one of their family members. November 29, 1864 - - U.S. Army troops led by Colonel John Chivington attacked and killed at least 400 Cheyenne and Arapahoe Indians at Sand Creek, Colorado after they had already surrendered.
November 30, 1700 - - The Battle of Narva occurred as eight thousand Swedish troops under King Charles XII invaded Norway, defeating a force of 50,000 Russians.
December 1, 1918 - - Iceland was granted independence by the Danish parliament.
December 2, 1804 - - Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned Emperor of France by Pope Pius VII in Paris.
December 3, 1931 - - British dominions gained complete legislative independence as the Statue of Westminster gave equal status to the dominions of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, and Newfoundland.
December 4, 1829 - - The British banned the practice of "suttee" in India in which Indian females traditionally burned themselves to death on their husband's funeral pyre.
December 5, 1933 - - The 18th Amendment (Prohibition Amendment) to the U.S. Constitution was repealed. For nearly 14 years, since January 29, 1920, it had outlawed the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages in the U.S.
Why Are Small Coins called Pennies.
"There has never been an official penny in the United States. The congressional act creating this coin refers to it as a cent, a name that comes from the Latin centum, or 'hundred'. But the English penny was widely used here until a law in 1787 banned all foreign currency from circulation. Thereafter the cent took on the name penny. Because it was the old English currency, the word penny appears in a number of folk sayings, such as 'A penny for your thoughts' and 'Penny wise and pound foolish.' The word penny itself probably comes the Latin pannus, or 'cloth'; in barbarian Europe, pieces or cloth were used as a means of exchanged."

Know Your Presidents . .Chester Arthur
"President Chester Arthur was the 21st U.S. President, serving from 1881 - 1885. Arthur was often called the First Gentleman of the Land and Prince Arthur, because he was such a well-dressed, handsome, charming man. He was also known as Chet by his friends and associates as an abbreviation of Chester. Along with other presidents who took office after their predecessor's death, Arthur is known as His Accidency because he became president after James Garfield died."

"The prairie chicken was often observed by early settlers dancing around at dawn with their fancy mating steps, making noises and strutting as part of their courtship with the females. Now, it happened that this tree was frequented by sparrows in great numbers. Before long the canary's song lost much of its sweetness and by the end of summer it couldn't sing like a canary any more at all. All it could do was twitter, twitter, twitter, like an English sparrow. It had spent the summer in bad company and it had become like them, losing its finest gift. With more free time on our hands, it is well for us to think about how we can best spend it. There are ever so many interesting and worthwhile things to do. To be busy with interesting things is the best way to keep out of bad company during vacation or leisure time.
