What a day we had at this year's Pancake Day/Silent Auction. Randy Cook, our Treasurer gave us a final figure, after everything was paid for, we had netted a total of 9,538.82. What a fantastic day it was. It was all possible when our entire club pitched in and each did their part. Thanks a million!

"Kiwanian of the Month of March 2018"
President Doug Balkman is here presenting, Randy Cook, with the Kiwanian of the Month certificate for March, 2018.
There hasn't been many things within the 40 years Randy has been with the club that he hasn't done. He has just once again, after 10 years as Treasurer, to pick it up again. He has held just about every office in the club, but none is quite as important as that of Treasurer.
Randy has always jumped at the chance to keep himself involved with kids, which is what Kiwanis is all about, and he has always done an outstanding job in whatever position he might find himself. Congratulations, Randy. You have certainly earned it!
Tracy Herman's name was drawn last week for Big Bucks, but she was not present. Sorry Tracy. Better luck next time.
Our Program from Last Week!
Glen Rydl brought a most remarkable person from "Vineyard Marketplace" ,a social enterprise of True Vineyard Ministries,located in the same area as the CenterPoint Station, 3946 W. IH 35, Suite 101. The Director of the Marketplace is Amy Brinkerhoff, and she gave a most enlightening presentation as to the source of their products and where the funds go to help with widows from Rwanda. Glen presented Amy with checks from our club and persons to assist them in this wonderful endeavor, The proceeds from the sale of items from the Marketplace all go to provide a fair wage so that the heads of households can provide for the many needs of themselves and their family members in Rwanda. Thank you Glen, for bringing this wonderful program.
Our Program for this coming Thursday
Lon Shell will be bringing our program for this coming Thursday. He is Mark Soto, Athletic Director at San Marcos High School.
Mark began his coaching career at Poteet High School in 1995, home of the Strawberry Festival. There, he helped turn around a 1-9 football team to a 4-6 team as a defensive coordinator in his second year of coaching, In 1997, he moved up to the 5A coaching ranks at Seguin High School. After Seguin, he left San Antonio to coach with one of the winning coaches in Texas High School football, Phil Danaher, at Calallen High School in Corpus Christi. At Calallen, Mark was an assistant coach with the 2000 4A Baseball Champions with a 38-3 record. Next stop, in 2000, was at Holmes High School, coaching linebackers and the Special Team's Coordinator, he helped Holmes reach the playoffs both years he was there. In 2002, he moved to take the Assistant Head Coach at Laredo United. At United, he helped change the climate of Longhorn Football. Resurrecting their program from a 254th ranked team to a top 50 team in 2 years and making the playoffs for the first time in 10 years.
Needless to say, Mark is an inspiration to his players and to the sports scene. Coaching to Change lives is his personal mission statement. BUILD CHARACTER FIRST! Let's have a great turnout for Mark.(Just a note from your bulletin Editor: While Mark was coaching at Poteet, I was the pastor at Poteet UMC.)
"Let's Be There for Our K-Kids!
We have a great opportunity to sit in on our K-Kids as they wrap special bags for the homeless. They have been planning this and it's going to take place on Thursday morning, April 5th at 8am over at De-Zavala Elementary School. They are also going to be discussing other ways to help our community. Also they will be selling childhood cancer awareness bracelets at this meeting, and the proceeds will be going to Camp Wapiyap, which is a summer camp for children facing pediatric cancer. Let's have 5 or six Kiwanians show up and give them a hand.
Planning another Club Social Get-Together
There are plans for another Kiwanis family eat-out at the GristMill. It will be at 6:30pm on April 19, 2018. This is for members and significant others of our Club.

March 30, 1981 - - Newly elected President Ronald Reagan was shot in the chest while walking toward his limousine in Washington, D.C., following a speech inside a hotel. The president was then rushed into surgery to remove a 22-caliber bullet from his left lung. "I should have ducked," Reagan joked. Three others were also hit including Reagan's Press Secretary, James Brady, who was shot in the forehead but survived. The president soon recovered from the surgery and returned to his duties.
March 31, 1968 - - President Lyndon Johnson made a surprise announcement that he would not seek re-election as a result of the Vietnam conflict.
April 1, 1865 - - During the American Civil War, Confederate troops of General George Pickett were defeated and cut off at Five Forks, Virginia. This sealed the fate of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's armies at Petersburg and Richmond and hastened the end of the war.
April 2, 1865 - - General Robert E. Lee informed Confederate President Jefferson Davis that he must evacuate the Confederate capital at Richmond, Virginia. Davis and his cabinet then fled by train.
April 3, 1944 - - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 8 to 1 that African Americans can not be barred from voting in the Texas Democratic primaries. the Court stated that discrimination against blacks violates the 15th Amendment and that political parties are not private associations!
April 4, 1968 - - Civil Rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was shot and killed by a sniper in Memphis, Tennessee. As head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, he had championed non-violent resistance to end racial oppression and had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He is best remembered for his I Have a Dream speech delivered at the 1963 Civil Rights March on Washington. That march and King's other efforts helped the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In 1986, Congress established the third Monday in January as a national holiday in his honor!
April 5, 1986 - - A bomb exploded at a popular discotheque frequented by American military personnel in West Berlin, killing two U.S. soldiers and a Turkish woman. American intelligence analysts attributed the attack to Muammar Qaddafi of Libya. Nine days later, President Ronald Reagan ordered a retaliatory air strike against Libya.

Having a Square Meal!
"The saying having a square meal comes from the English Royal Naving during the time of Nelson. In order to stop the plates/dishes slipping around on the table when the ship was at sea, four pieces of wood were nailed to the benches in the shape of a square to stop the plates from slipping....hence 'having a square meal'"

"America the Beautiful - 'Boot Hill Cemetery", Dodge City, KS
The Boot Hill graveyard - - one of America early Roadside wonders -- - has been lulled into a sleepy version of its former tootin'-tootin' self, with trimmed lawn, restrained natural wood headstones, and a conspicuous lack of upturned boots and dangling ropes. You can probably find more amusing Boot Hills almost anywhere else in the West.
However, the dangling corpse of public opinion swings both ways, and Boot Hill has proven harder to kill than the desperadoes of Dodge City. The museum features a rebuilt 1950's knotty pine Gunsmoke TV room that hints at something special, and has an exhibit of vintage, bawdy Boot Hill souvenirs that shows how the old boneyard inspired greatness when given a chance. It may never recapture all of its lurid glory, but one day a skeleton arm will push up a loose board in the museum floor. Dodge City folks should think twice before hammering that board back into place.
