It is estimated that over one third of people over the age of 65 fall at least once per year, and 25% of those who fall, result in serious injuries such as fractures and sprains, and could lead to a loss of mobility, confidence and independence. Even with our advantaged advance health care, 20% of hip fractures die within one year, where cause for 95% of hip fractures is fall. Losing sensitivity in the feet is a part of normal aging, but also a major cause of falls that are preventable.
Our program this coming Thursday, October 1st is Camille Phillips, who will share with us ways and means by which we can keep from falling.

 "The leader of the vegetarian society just couldn't control himself anymore. He just needed to try some pork, just to see what it tasted like. So one summer day he told his members he was going on a vacation. He packed out of town and headed for the nearest restaurant. After sitting down, he ordered a roasted pig, and impatiently waited for his delicacy. After just a few minutes, he heard someone call his name, and to his great chagrin he saw one of his fellow members walking towards him. Just at that same moment, the waiter walked over, with a huge platter holding a full roasted pig with an apple in it's mouth.
'Isn't that something,' says the leader after only a moments pause, '

  DON'T FORGET, 'OCTOBER DASH 2015 WILL BE ON US BEFORE WE KNOW IT.
The race committee is hard at work getting all of the details ironed out for our Second Annual October Dash 5K Race, held on Saturday morning, October 24th. Kelli Whigham is heading up the details, but this is not Kelli's race, it is our Kiwanis Club race, and we need every member to come out on Saturday morning, October 24th, around 5:30am (yes, it will still be dark), and help set up. The set up, making sure water, gator aid, registration packets, tables set up, awards to be sorted and set out, equipment, sound system, all have to be set up. The more members we have to help out, the better. And remember since it is near Halloween, wear whatever get-up you want to. There will be some new things added this, especially for the kids, so we hope there will be a lot of kids, because there will be a Kid's Race. NOW! .And this is important. How many of you have even approached a business, or restaurant or friends and offered them an opportunity to help sponsor this race. Not just the mega businesses, but small ones maybe just getting started, and would like the publicity, but members, you have the forms and the letters....take a few minutes of your busy day and check out some leads. Kelli has given a whole list of those that were contacted last year. What more do we need? The runners will come out as they usually do, but right now, we are behind where we were last year. Let's make this race successful, not just for our club, but we all know where the money goes that is raised and who they help....Kids!, Kids!, Kids!. Go!,Go!,Go!

 VETERAN'S DAY T-SHIRTS
This is the season in our club where the entire club membership is needed to be involved in two very important events....(1) October Dash Race which is coming up on October 24. It's a Saturday and we are in need of as many club members that can come and help set up, and tear down. There's another article dealing specifically with this race elsewhere in this week's bulletin. The second big event is the Veteran's Day Parade, November 7. Again, there is a lot of work to do to put the float together out at our warehouse on Stapler Road, helping decorate kids bikes. To all Kiwanis club members, these two events cannot succeed if just a few pitch in. We need all of you to pitch in. We are ordering new T-Shirts for the Parade. We have 20 members signed up and given their size. The logo is the same as last year (see picture), but the camouflage will be lighter, more like our service personnel are wearing in Afghanistan and Iraq. The following have signed up: Brown, Rydl, Balkman,Banks,Polk,Cook, (both Randy & Pam), Moe Johnson, Nelson, Mendez, Strunk, Hahn, Whigham (Both Kelli & Steve),Crumley,Chas. Johnson, Shell, Wilson, Burleson, Grizzle. Those we have not heard from are: Prather, Collier, Roppolo, Burns, Brannon, Breihan, Case, Andrew Gary, Furney, Herman, Martin, White. HISTORICAL EVENTS THAT HAPPENED DURING THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 25 TO OCTOBER 1ST.
September 25, 1690........The first American newspaper was published. A single edition of Publick Occurrences Both Foreign and Domestick appeared in Boston, Massachusetts. However, British authorities considered the newspaper offensive and ordered its immediate suppression.
September 26, 1918.......The last major battle of World War I, the Battle of the Argonne, began as a combined force of French and Americans attacked the Germans along a 40 mile front.
September 27, 1964.......After a 10 month investigation, the Warren Commission Report was issued stating a lone gunman had been responsible for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963.
September 28, 1978.........Pope John Paul I died after only 33 days in office. He was succeeded by John Paul II.
September 29, 1829.......Britain's "bobbies" made their first public appearance. Greater London's Metropolitan Police force was established by an act of Parliament at the request of Home Secretary, Sir Robert Peel, after whom they were nicknamed. The force later became known as Scotland Yard, the site of their first headquarters.
September 30, 1955......Actor James Dean was killed in a car crash in California at age 24. Although he made just three major films, Rebel without a Cause, East of Eden, and Giant, he remains one of the most influential actors.
October 1, 1908.........Henry Ford's Model T, a "universal car" designed for the masses, went on sale for the first time.

 CAMBODIA ELIMINATES MATERNAL NEONATAL TETANUS
After conducting a validation survey in Cambodia, the World Health Organization confirmed the country in Southeast Asia has eliminated maternal neonatal tetanus.
"One might wonder how a village in Cambodia hindered by poverty and filled with basic huts could be transformed into a vaccination campaign site. Yet UNICEF and its local supporters make it work, in Cambodia and villages around the world, says Europe 2 Region Coordinator Gabriele Neumayr-Stof, who visited Cambodia earlier this year. "Our donations help make these kinds of activities possible, protecting mothers and babies around the world."
Since 1999, UNICEF and its partners, Kiwanis, being one, have eliminated this dreaded disease in 39 countries, including India, Mauritania, Madagascar, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Sierra Leone. It is great progress, yet millions of women and babies in 21 countries are still at risk.
"Step by step, we are winning the battle against tetanus," adds Randy DeLay. "Let dig deep and do everything possible during the next three months to reach our fundraising goal - - and ensure no more babies die from tetanus."
