A Bit of a Different Program last Week.
Our program last week was a bit different than usual. Frederick Case was to have brought our speaker, but he was out of town, so we sort of did something that everyone thoroughly enjoy. We played Bingo! And the money that was raised when a winner was found, all went to help diminish the Eliminate Project. We played two rounds, and even though our club had fulfilled it's Eliminate giving quota, we just felt that this continues to be a good cause, so that's where the funds from last week's fun meeting went. Thanks Doug.
Program for this coming Thursday
Charles Walts will be bringing the program for this coming Thursday. He is bringing Amber Wakem, founder of $tart-Up Kids's Club. She is simply a mother who set out to change our ways of looking at education. She believes in shaping the world by cultivating entrepreurship to broaden youth perspective and enhance skills through community connection & experience.

June 22,1941 - - Starting at 3:15 am, some 3.2 millions German plunged headlong into Russia across an 1800-mile front, in a major turning point of World War II. At 7 am that morning, a proclamation from Hitler to the German people announced, "At this moment a march is taking place that, for its extent, compares with the greatest the world has ever seen...."
June 23, 1865 - - The last formal surrender of Confederate troops occurred as Cherokee leader and Confederate Brigadier General Watie surrendered his battalion comprised of American Indians in the Oklahoma Territory.
June 24, 2010 - - Labor Party deputy Julia Gillard became Australia's first female Prime Minister. She was born in Wales and had moved to Australia as a child. She worked as a lawyer before entering politics.
June 25, 1950 - - The Korean War began as North Korean troops, led by Russian-built tanks, crossed the 38th parallel and launched a full scale invasion of South Korea. Five days later, U.S. ground forces entered the conflict, which lasted until July 27, 1953, when an armistice was signed at Panmunjom, formally dividing the country at the 38th parallel into North & South Korea.
June 26, 1945 - - The United Nations Charter was signed in San Francisco by 50 nations. The Charter was ratified on October 24, 1945.
June 27, 1859 - - American musician Mildred J. Hill was born in Louisville, Kentucky. She composed the melody for what is now the world's most often sung song, Happy Birthday to You.
June 28, 1862 - - During the American Civil War, the siege of the Confederate city of Vicksburg began as Admiral David Farragut succeeded in taking a fleet past the Mississippi River stronghold. The siege continued over a year.

"Over a Barrel"
Punishment in the old days often meant that a person often deserved a public whipping. In order to prevent him from escaping during this whip lashing, he was tied to an overturned barrel (top body bent to the curve of the barrel while feet remained on the ground.) Thus there was no way this person could escape his punishment. Today the term "to have over a barrel" means that someone is in a position in which there is just no way for them to escape their punishment or whatever other dreadful outcome is coming to them."

America The Beautiful.... Mount Kilauea, Hawaii's Big Island
After you've hiked mountains and soaked in some sun and ooh-ed and ahh-ed at all the other beauty Hawaii has to offer, you will still be taken aback when you experience Mount Kilauea up close and personal. Though it is the youngest of the shield volcanos on Hawaii's Big Island, it is also one of the world's largest active volcanos today. Kilauea has been erupting continuously since 1983 and doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, which is great news for volcanologists and adventure-seeking tourists.
