"What a Fantastic Program Last Thursday!"
Charles Johnson, Boy Scout leader of Medical Explorers and Nicole Sawtell came and gave an absolutely fantastic program on what the Medical Explorers are doing in our area and beyond. With 145 members, associated with the Boy Scouts of America, these Explorers do so much to help our Emergency Medical Teams by assisting as First Responders..They have radios so they can be called at any time. They will be very visible at football games in their t-shirts with MEDIC scrolled across the back. These explorers range from 18 years old to 43 years of age, and it is absolutely amazing all that they do, from going on mission trips, to riding along with the EMT's, to becoming themselves certified as EMt. They meet every week. Some of the things that they do are: clean dental instruments, Dispense pharmaceuticals, remake wheel chairs, keep records on health issues,. help with Spanish translation, show love & compassion at all times, and most important, they learn from their experiences.
Nicole is one of the more advanced Explorers and she spoke of how enthusiastic she and the other Explorers go about helping people, even evangelizing and they love to teach. It was a wonderful program. Thanks Charles & Nicole for being with us.
Welcome to our Guests last Thursday, September 15th, 2016
We welcomed Nicole Sawtell to our club meeting last week. She came as a member of the Medical Explorers, and Charles gave her opportunity to express her views on how important the Medical Explorers are. She is one of the more experienced Explorers and plans to go into full time EMT work in the future. Rhonda White was back for her second visit and is contemplating joining in the very near future. The Board has approved her request for membership.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING NEWS
Here is a brief rundown of what our Board discussed last Thursday, September 15, 2016.
Old Business....1.....Letter that was sent out to those who are past due in their Membership Dues. These need to be paid. The club needs members to keep up with this obligation.
2.....Discussion about how well the Chamber Exposition went: Booth display, good; Handouts were good; Poster Board of pictures was good; Trifold informational was good;
3......There was an update given on the upcoming Pumpkin Dash, on October 29. Everyone needs to get out and get sponsors for this race.
4.......There was an update on the upcoming Installation Banquet at Brookdale, San Marcos North. At present, we have 35 who have signed up to attend. Kiwanian of the Year has been selected (to be announced at the Banquet; and President's Award done.
New Business....(1).Randy Cook proposed a draft to the Board of the 2017 Budget to consider.....(2)Lon Shell, together with Moe Johnson met and Documents were presented for discussion and club information regarding helping new officers and club members to know what responsibilities they can indicate their interests in with regards to our service projects, and other committees . More will be presented to the club. These documents will greatly enhance the understanding of our responsibilities of service within our club.....(3) The Board unanimously approved Rhonda White's request for membership in our club. ( Members present: Moe Johnson, Tracy Herman, Randy Cook, Glen Rydl, Del Brown, Ted Breihan, Lon Shell, and Doug Balkman)
"Our Program for Thursday, September 22nd, 2016
We will start next Thursday morning with a RoundTable at Grins. Come on out, eat and chat. Then at 6pm, you who have signed up for the Installation Banquet and Awards Ceremony, be at Brookdale, San Marcos North, 1720 Old Ranch Road 12, by 6:00pm or you can come a little early, like 5:45pm. Tracy Herman has gone to a lot of work to put this together and it will be worth it. Right now, we have 35 signed up. The menu will consist of Lasagna, garlic bread, green salad and for dessert, Banana pudding. There is no charge for this meal, but a $10 donation would be appreciated.
"Kiwanis Is A Verb"...No.10.
Honoring Our Leaders: "The leadership of Kiwanis changes every year in a remarkable upheaval that one would surely expect to fail.....unless one saw it work. Most club officers change every year although it is common for Kiwanians to "move through the chairs", on his or her way to the presidency. Club directors also change frequently although directors' terms of office, if permitted by club Bylaws, may last as long as three years.
An exception to the frequent turn-over of Kiwanis leadership is found in the offices of Secretary and Treasurer where, because of the scarcity of needed skills and the importance of continuity from year to year, Kiwanians may remain in the same office year after year.
In time, every Kiwanian is destined to have a leadership role. . . unless that role is steadfastly avoided. That the frequent change in Kiwanis leadership works as well as it does is a tribute to (1) the support that past leaders typically give new leaders, and (2) the excellent leadership materials and training that Kiwanis International provides for each year's crop of leaders.
Leadership, of course, requires greater than usual effort and Kiwanis clubs traditionally honor their leaders with respect and deference. Each year's club leadership team, especially the president, is honored at the beginning and ending of the term of office. It is not unusual to address the president as "President George", or President Susan", and the president is given the privilege of appointing committees and setting the club's focus for the year." During the 1890s, many tiny stone "fairy" crosses were found around Bull Mountain in northern Patrick County, Virginia, according to Harper's Weekly. Scientists said the geometrically precise objects were naturally occurring crystal formations. Others claimed they were flints that had once belonged to an extinct race of pygmies. Fairy Stone State Park in Virginia is the largest of the original six state parks that opened on June 15, 1936.
The park's land was donated in 1933 by Junius B. Fishburn, former president of the Southwest Virginia Trust Company, and former owner of the Roanoke Times. The park is 4, 868 acres, making it the largest of the six original parks and one of the largest to this day. There are also many legends also about this park, and these little crosses.
"A Proposal for reducing mandatory travel through Self-Evaluation by local clubs."(Written by Rob Martin, Regional Trustee for Region 1.)
This proposal is designed to relieve Lt. Governors of the reoccurring mandatory travel time needed to visit each Division's Clubs a minimum of three times annually. The new Trustee Management System includes a major emphasis on Lt. Governors' role as one of providing assistance to their clubs rather than evaluating their performance. I believe we might better served by utilizing a self-evaluating process for the clubs. The information gathered would be a better description of performance and a very valuable source to assist the Lt. Governors in identifying areas where assistance could be focused on weaknesses in growth and service.
When I was unable to travel after my heart surgery, I developed a proposal of self-evaluation for each of the clubs I served. Utilizing a modified form which I created, I asked each club to evaluate themselves as follows:
a. The official club meeting is to be self-evaluated by members of the club's governing Board. The results are forwarded to the Lt. Governor to be used as a basis for future assistance by the Lt. Governor.
b. Each clubs' governing Board self-evaluation would be accomplished by the individual Board members, forwarded to the President for consolidation and then forwarded to the division's Lt. Governor providing a second source for future assistance by the Lt. Governor.
c. This self-evaluation would replace the traditional Education and Contact meeting. I have revised the proposal under Club's policies, Procedures and service. The proposed evaluation would be prepared by the Club President (and perhaps the President Elect) providing a basis for future assistance by the Lt. Governor.
d. I believe this or a similar process may interest potential candidates for future Lt. Governor positions. A reduction in mandatory travel to accomplish the current duties of Lt. Governor might also prefer a more acceptable role of providing a mentoring link with local clubs. It would provide valuable information in preparation of a Five Year Plan as well as application of The Formula and the IPLAN.
e. This proposal would necessitate additional policy and procedure development and encourage future participation in other roles in the Texas Oklahoma District. Perhaps a sub-committee of the Long Range Planning Committee could study the issues involved and provide a recommendation for the full committee to consider.
