"Christmas Interclub!
Don't forget December 8th is our Christmas Interclub . It will be held at Black's BBQ, off of Guadalupe Street. It will be at 12:00, everyone will go through the line and get what you want and pay as you go. There will be some Christmas entertainment. If you haven't signed up for it yet, do so this coming Thursday, 1 December.
Terrific Kids Award Ceremony!
It's that time again when our Terrific Kids over at DeZavala Elementary School meets to hand out awards for being Terrific Kids. We will need about 10 Kiwanians to help with this on Thursday, December 8th at 2:00pm. You need to get to DeZavala school about 1:45, sign in at the office and then go to the Cafeteria. This is always a fun time for kids, teachers, and our club. Plan to help out.

"Committees in Kiwanis!
The most common Service Committees and their responsibilities are described below.
The Committee on Youth Services finds ways to help boys and girls adjust to their environment and meet the social, economic and moral demands they may encounter. Youth Services committees also work to help youth in their choice of vocations.
The Committee on Community Services finds ways for the Club to provide effective community service. It works to assist the Handicapped, support Cultural Activities, promotes Safety Education, Crime Control, and Health Education, encourage Community Beautification, improve the Environment, support Agriculture where appropriate and encourage Good Citizenship.
The Committee on Human and Spiritual Values cooperates on broad and non-denominational lines with religious leaders and groups in the community to create a greater individual and public consciousness of the importance of religious and spiritual values. (Note: In modern Kiwanis practice, the Committee on Human and Spiritual Values is broadly based with responsibilities that properly include any service activity that works to improve the human condition.)
The Committee on Sponsored Clubs coordinates the Kiwanis Club's activities with its sponsored clubs. Kiwanis is the only major service organization that sponsors service clubs in schools. K-Kids clubs in elementary schools, Builder's Clubs in middle schools, Key Clubs in high schools, and Circle K-Clubs in colleges. In recent years, Aktion Clubs (for developmentally-disabled adults) have also been included as a Sponsored Club for Kiwanis clubs. (Note: Every Kiwanis club is strongly encouraged to actively support at least one Sponsored club.
The Committee on Young Children - Priority One is the major service emphasis of Kiwanis, the aim of which is the reduction or elimination of problems that threaten children from before birth through age 5 - - the period of fastest and most critical human development.

"My cooking has always been the target of family jokes. One evening, I prepared dinner a bit too quickly, the kitchen filled with smoke, and the smoke detector went off. Although both of my children had received fire-safety training at school, they did not respond to the alarm. Annoyed, I stormed through the house in search of them. I found then in the bathroom, washing their hands. Over the loud buzzing of the smoke alarm, I asked them to identify the sound. 'It's the smoke detector,' they replied in union. 'Do you know what that sound means', I demanded. 'Sure,' my oldest replied. 'Dinner's ready.'"

"America the Beautiful"
In 1854 J. Sterling Morton moved his family to the treeless plains of Nebraska to build his now famous salt company - - When It Rains It Pours. Morton and his wife loved nature and their estate was soon planted with trees, shrubs and flowers. To promote planting even more trees, in 1872, Morton, along with friends and associates, organized "A Celebration of Trees." His idea gained momentum and, in 1874, March 12th was officially proclaimed Arbor Day in Nebraska. Soon other states followed and by 1882, schools throughout the country began celebrating trees. Today Arbor Day is the last Friday in April.
