organization is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and disabled veterans through fly fishing and associated activities including education and outings.
Project Healing Waters is a 501(C) (3) non-profit organization incorporated in the state of Maryland. PHWFF receives no government funding and is dependent on tax-deductible, charitable donations and the help of numerous volunteers to meet the educational, equipment, transportation and related needs of its participants. Project Healing Waters Fly fishing strives to effectively serve the deserving past and present members of our armed forces who have made great sacrifices in the service of our nation. You won't want to miss this program. Bring along guests with you.

"Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances."
During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty: The roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected and se need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up."
At that moment, the substitute organist played 'The Star spangled Banner.'
And that is how the substitute became the regular orgtanist!"

We had two special guests with us April 16,one was Nancy Strunk, wife of member Gary Strunk . Gary  was presented with a Walter Zeller award from the Eliminate project. The other guest was Laura Harvill, who used to be a member of the club about four years ago, but following her husbands death, she moved to Hondo. Thanks Laura and Nancy for visiting with us, it was a special time for you all and a special time for us as well.

 And the winner for Big Bucks last Thursday was none other than our Secretary, John Polk. Too bad, John, there was only $2.00 in the jar, and guess what! He gave it all back to the Eliminate Project.

 W hat an absolute surprise that came in Pres. Del Brown's mailbox the morning of Thursday, April 16.......Another Walter Zeller award for one of our newer member, Gary Strunk,bought this award, and it couldn't have come at a better time. It was presented to him last Thursday by former Lt. Governor John Polk in the absence of Rob Martin. This is the third award given during the month of April. How wonderful, and just think how many innoculations that will help provide for hundreds of mothers and babies affected by the dreaded disease, Maternal Neonatal Tetanus. Many mothers and babies will be spared the awful disease that has led to so many deaths in about 30 countries. Thanks so much Gary for making this possible. |

 Our club's club advisor, Chad Burns, tells us that the Builder's Club, located at  Miller Middle School is once again up and running. That is good news. They have already had a couple of projects underway, one which is gardening. The club was struggling for a bit, but thanks to Chad and others, it is getting a new start. Builder's Club is the largest service organization for middle school students (ages 12-14), and is student led. What exactly is service leadership. Kiwanis International empowers people at every stage of life to become competent, capable and compassionate leaders by helping them learn to help others. Service leadership is defined as the next step beyond service learning. Once a young person fully understands the concept of learning by helping others, he or she begins to grow personally as a leader. Good going Chad. |

 Our club wants to congratulate the Fredericksburg Kiwanis club for their decision to become a Model Club with regards to the Eliminate Project. 
It's a giant leap of faith, as our club made earlier this year, but considering what making that decision will do among the mothers and children of those countries faced with Maternal Neonatal Tetanus, it will be well worth it. Our club again wishes the Fredericksburg Club a grand "ATTA WAY TO GO"

  My, O My! Is it Garage Sale time already? It was brought up at last week's Board Meeting and a date has been set. It will be on SATURDAY, MAY 23rd. Unless otherwise changed, it will be out at the Warehouse like it was last year. Garage Sales are always a win-win situation. We get rid of things we no long need, and someone who feels they need for it, buys it. It's a win-win situation. So start looking in your garage or wherever you have things that you no longer want have stored. Watch for further announcements. You know what happened on Pancake Day, let's make the same thing happen on Garage Sale Day. I know that I am going to be looking for something that I know I can't live without, and I'm also going to be getting rid of some things that I just know someone out there really needs it. So put May 23rd on your calendar, and again, we are going to need your help, both in giving, but also in coming out and helping on the day of.....This is teamwork. That's what our club is all about....teamwork! |

Just like last time Garry White brought a program on 'teaching Germans in Germany' (English that is!), it was fascinating. Here he is standing in front of the map of Germany, with the state of Texas superimposed over the top of it, giving some idea of how big Germany is and in what proximity the areas he was traveling in compared to Texas. Garry had a sense of humor that made his presentation delightful. I have been to Germany while in the military, and the country is beautifuil as well as historical. Garry couldn't begin to tell us everything, but the things he did tell us, we thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks bunches, Garry......and thank you Francis Mendez for bringing him.

Remember our first Flag Day is Memorial Day, May 25. If those of you who have not dropped off your renewal slips, please do. A number of them have been done, but Randy needs them all done as soon as you can. There are new flag sites that must be assigned to routes, so the quicker we get them all in, either with a check in hand or have them mail them in, everything else can be put in order. And don't forget to make sure the Kiwanis banners are on all your flags.

 HISTORICAL EVENTS FOR THE COMING WEEK...APRIL 17 - 23, 2015
April 17, 1961.......A U.S. backed attempt to overthrow Premier Fidel Castro of Cuba failed disastrously in what became known as the Bay of Pigs fiasco.The failed invasion heightened Cold War tensions between Cuba's pollitical ally, Soviet Russia, and the fledgling administration of President John F. Kennedy. The folllowing year, the Russians brazenly installed nuclear missiles in Cuba resulting in the Cuban Missile Crisis.
April 18, 1775.......The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere and William Dawes occurred as the two men rode out of Boston about 10pm to warn patriots at Lexington and Concord of the approaching British.
April 19, 1775........At dawn in Massachusetts, about 70 armed militiamen stood face to face on Lexington Green with a British advance guard unit. An unordered 'shot hear around the world' began the American Revolution. A volley of British rifle fire was followed by a charge with bayonets leaving eight Americans dead and ten wounded.
April 20, 1999.........The deadliest school shooting in U.S. history occurred in Littleton, Colorado, as two students armed with guns and explosives stormed into Columbine High School at lunch time then killed 12 classmates and a teacher and wounded more than 20 other persons before killing themselves.
April 21, 1836........The Battle of San Jacinto between Texans led by Sam Houston and Mexican forces led by Santa Anna took place near present day Houston. The Texans decisively defeated the Mexican forces thereby achieving independence.
April 22, 1889.......The Oklahoma land rush began at noon with a single gunshot signaling the start of a mad dash by thousands of settlers. They were seeking to claim part of nearly two million acres made available by the federal government. The land originally belonged to Creek and Seminole Indian tribes.
April 23, 1998.........Established by Israel's Knesset as Holocaust Day in remembrance of the estimated six million Jews killed by Nazis.

A good suggestion was brought up at our last Board meeting about sharing our newsletter (or bulletin) with the other clubs in our Division, as well as sending one on to TX/OK District. So, with this issue, we are going to try it. We would appreciate any comments from the other clubs about whether you are getting the bulletin or not. We may not have your correct email.
