Last Weeks Program
Last Week's program was brought by Lon Shell, and it was Coach Jake Spavital, head coach at Texas State University. He is Texas State's 20th head coach sine the program began in 1904. Coach Spavital came to Texas State after serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from West Virginia and featured one of the most potent offenses in all of college football. In 2018, WVU ranked No. 8 nationally in total offense during the regular season after accumulating 5,724 yards including 3,939 passing yards and 38 touchdowns. West Virginia ended the regular season ranked No. 15 in the AP poll after spending the entire season nationally ranked for the first time since 2007.
Prior to his return to West Virginia, Coach Spavital served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under head coach Sonny Dykes at California during the 2016 season. He guided the Golden Bears to a top-25 national ranking in eight different categories, including No. 4 in passing offense (358.8 yards per game, No 8 in first down offense (335), No. 10 in total offense (518.3 yards per game) and No. 22 in scoring offense (37.1 points per game.
Coach Spavital is a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a two year letterman as a quarterback and punter for Missouri State from 2004-o7. He earned his bachaelor's degree in business administration in 2008.
He was a Consensus First-Team All State Quarterback at Tulsa Union High School, posting a 26-1 career record as the starting quarterback and leading Union to the Class 6A state title in 2002.
He is married to the former Mehgan Morris, one of the top Mountaineer gymnasts in school history. His father is a former high school football coach, while his brother Zac is the defensive coordinator at Texas State.
It truly was a joy to listen to Coach Spavital, and I think he fielded every question that was thrown at him. Thanks Lon for bringing him.

"Two Big Flag Days Coming Up!
We have flags to be put out in November, as well as to get ready for the Veteran's Day Parade. The first flag day is on Election Day, Tuesday (November 5th) and the second is on Veteran's Day, Monday, November 11. We also will be decorating our Kiwanis float for Saturday, November 9, as well as putting flags around the square on that day. We will need all our club member's involvement in that parade, riding the float or walking with our Children's Bike Brigade.\
The Program for this coming Week
Ronda Young will be bringing the program this coming Thursday, November 7th. She will be bringing two representatives of 'Leadership, San Marcos' She will be bringing Chelsea Roberts and Joanna Gilland.
'leadership San Marcos began under the wings of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce. In 1985, the Education Committee of the Chamber developed and sponsored the first class. Graduates of the class of 1986 were Paul Nielson, Ron Hart, Patsy Greiner, Chuck Misenheimer, Jim Burn, William Hague, and Cheryl Carr. Since then, over two hundred in the community have graduated from this prestigious program.
As the program grew, it became independent of the Chamber of Commerce in the early 90's. Leadership San Marcos became self governing with the formation of its own Board of Directors. Let's all be there this Thursday for this most informative civic involvement for tomorrow's leaders. Bring a guest with you!

"Why Is It Called a ROUND ROBIN?
"A Round Robin is a tournament in which each contestant plays every other contestant. Its name has nothing to do with the bird, but comes from ruban, French for "ribbon". The first round robin was devised in eighteenth-century France, where the king, if angered by a petition, was likely to have the first signer beheaded. Naturally, nobody wanted to be first. Finally someone came up with the idea of having all the petitioners sign a ribbon and then joining the ribbon in a circle. Thus, nobody's name was first on the list! A similar device originated in the British navy, where the ship's captain could order hanged the first signer of a petition of grievance, who was assumed to be the leader. The signatures of the petitioners were thus arranged in a circle, like the spokes of a ship's wheel."

November 1, 1700 - - Charles II of Spain died and was succeeded by Philip V, resulting in the War of Spanish Succession.
November 2, 1947 - - The first and only flight of Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose" flying boat occurred in Long Beach Harbor, California. It flew about a mile at an altitude of 70 feet. Costing $25 million, the 200 ton plywood eight-engine Hercules was the world's largest airplane, designed, built and flown by Hughes. It later became a tourist attraction alongside the Queen Mary ship at Long Beach and has since been moved to Oregon.
November 3, 1957 - - The first Opium War between China and Britain began after British frigates blew up several Chinese junks.
November 4, 1842 - - Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd in Springfield, Illinois.
November 5, 1911 - - Aviator C.P. Snow completed the first transcontinental flight across America, landing at Pasadena, California. He had taken off from Sheepshead Bay, New York, on September 17th and flew a distance of 3,417 miles.
November 6, 1860 - - Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th U.S. President and the first Republican. He received 180 of 303 possible electoral vortes and 40 percent of the popular vote.
November 7, 1944 - - President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to an unprecedent fourth term, defeating Thomas E. Dewey. Roosevelt died less than a year later on April 12, 1945

There is only one place for petty irritations, festering feuds and burning grudges. That place is the wastebasket!"
