This past Thursday, our club was privileged to have four of the five high school recipients, who received Kiwanis scholarships this year. They were accompanied by their parents. The four that were present were (left to right), Nayan Patel, Joshua Scully, Madison Gish & Hannah McComb. Each one of them took about 5 minutes to thank the club for their being selected and also what were their plans for furthering their college education. Sarah Mock was unable to attend. Each of the five were granted a $1,000 scholarship from our club which were handed out at the San Marcos High School by our club president, Moe Johnson.
We are very proud of each of these student, all of which have excelled in their high school activities. Their destinations are all different, from Trinity University, to UCLA, to UT Texas, and their aspirations are just as varied. Good Luck to each and every one of them as they begin to climb the next ladder of knowledge to prepare themselves for their future work.
Great Program!
Andrew Gary brought a very different type of program last Thursday, to the delight of everyone that was present. It was all about taking a stump of a tree, or some ordinary driftwood and with knife and Dremel tool, turn that hunk of wood into a beautiful work of art. At the end of his program, a drawing was done for one of Andrew's pieces of wood carving, and guess who got it...Yep, our Treasuer, Randy Cook. Being a wood worker myself, although mine is in scrollsawing, I can appreciate the hard earned sweat, determination and imagination that goes into an art piece that Andrew starting when he turned 65. Thank y8ou Andrew for sharing a favorite part of your live with us.
We had a goodly number of guests at our noon meeting on the 19th of May. We always enjoy having folks interested in what our club stands for. Most of the guests were high school recipients and their parents who received scholarships from our club. Francis Breihan was there with her husband Ted .
Other guests were Karen Gish, mother of Madison Gish; Susan McComb & John McComb, parents of Hannah McComb; Dr. Pulin Patel, father of Nayan Patel, and Mimi Davis, mother of Joshua Scally.
Sorry! Randal Grizzle had his name drawn out of the old "Big Bucks Jar", and unfortunately he was not there. Sorry Randal. I'm still waiting for my name to be drawn!
A very successful Terrific Kids Ceremony.was held last Friday, May 20th over at DeZavala Elementary School. About 90 very special kids, selected by their teachers went down the line of Kiwanis members and received little 'things' all donated by the local business for just this occasion. We had 12 Kiwanis members show up to help distribute these gifts to these very special kids. Those who showed up were: Randy Cook, Frederick Case, Moe Johnson, Del Brown, Gary Nelson, Chester Banks, Doug Balkman & wife Jeanne, Pam Cook, Kelli Whigham, Francis Mendez and Garry White. Great turnout. Thanks to all of you who helped and thanks to the businesses that donated the 'freebies".
Our Program for this coming Thursday, May 26th, 2016
Francis Mendez will be presenting our program for this Thursday, May 26th. He is bringing Dr. David Wierschem, Associate Professor of Computer Information Systems. He received his B.S. from Texas A&M at Dallas; MBA from Georgia State University; M.S. from University of Texas at Dallas and his Ph,D from University of Texas at
Dallas.
His research interests center around IT certifications, cultural impacts on web designs, data mining and avid supporter of AITP. He co-hosted a national and regional conference, served as the database competition coordinator and been a judge on several competitions.
Let's welcome Dr Wierschem and have a great turnout.
Our U.S. Constitution!
1.......The median age in America by the end of the 18th century was 16 years of age (today, it is around 34 years of age), 19 of every 20 citizens lived on the land, and 70% of the land was worked by its owners (30% by tenants).
2........The national government spent $4.3 million during the first session of Congress from 1789-1791. During the last year that George Washington was President of the United States (1796-1797) the entire cost of running the federal government was $5, 727,000.
3...........James Madison of Virginia was responsible for proposing the resolution to create the various Cabinet positions within the Executive Branch of our government and twelve amendments to the Constitution of which ten became the Bill of Rights.
4...........Although the United States Treasury Department stopped distributing currency denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 in 1969, for all intents and purposes the production of each stopped after World War II. , these notes are still legal tender and may be found on rare occasions in circulation. James Madison, the 'Father of the Constitution is on the $5,000 bill.
5...........At the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin observed the symbol of a half-sun on George Washington's chair and remarked, "I have the happiness to know that it is a rising and not a setting sun".
6...........Benjamin Franklin made a suggestion at the Constitutional Convention that the sessions be opened with a prayer. The delegates refused to accept the motion stating that there was not enough money to hire a chaplain.
7...........Of the fifty-five delegates who attended the convention, 34 were lawyers, 8 had signed the Declaration of Independence, and almost half were Revolutionary veterans. The remaining members were planters, educators, ministers, physicians, financiers, judges and merchants. About a quarter of them were large land owners and all of them held some type of public office (39 were former Congressmen and 8 were present or past governors).
8...........William Few of Georgia was the only member to represent the yeoman farmer class which comprised the majority of the population of the country. Nineteen of the members who were chosen to represent their state never attended a meeting.
9...........Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania was known as the "Sage of the Constitutional Convention" He was also the mediator at the convention and often counseled that "we are here to consult, not to contend."
10..........George Washington and James Madison were the only Presidents to sign the Constitution.
(A Day In May!)
May is one of the most beautiful months of the year in the North Temperate Zone. Usually the snow and ice are gone and the hot temperature haven't arrived. The first garden begins to sprout in May. The wild flowers are blooming, and the trees and grasses have turned green.
Mother's Day was first observed in 1908. It was designated by Presidential proclamation, and was recognized officially by Congress & the President in 1914. It honors mothers on the second Sunday in May.

Builder's Club Receives Support Check
Randy Cook & Del Brown presented an annual support check last Thursday, May 19th, to Chad Burns, teacher at Miller Middle School and faculty sponsor of their Kiwanis Builder's Club. Last year the Builder's Club with almost 25 Middle School students under the leadership of Chad and other faculty members, started a rather large garden project, including a rain barrel creation as their contribution to our Kiwanis organization. We are in a new year now and Chad is again formulating projects at the school, to include continuing with the garden project. We are very proud of the work that Chad has done and will continue to do throughout this new year. Thanks Chad for your loyal support and those in Miller who are supporting you.
No Offense Officer!!
"Did you hear about the guy who called the police because he saw some people stealing things out of the shed in his back yard? The police asked him if they were in his house and he said, "No." Then the police said that all units were busy and he should lock his doors. They would send someone as soon as they could.
The guy hung up, waited 30 seconds and called back. "I just called you about the people stealing things out of my shed. Well, don't worry about it, I shot them."
In less than five minutes, police cars screeched into his driveway, sirens blaring, and caught the thieves red-handed.
"I thought you said you shot them," said the officer. "Thought you said no one was available," he replied!"
Salvation Army Clothing Closet is now open!
This is a somewhat belated message from Gary Strunk, who beside being a great Kiwanis member, but also works at the Salvation Army. He says: "The Salvation Army Clothing Closet is finally fully functional. It will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm. If anyone needs clothing, it would b e best to call for an appointment. If it is an emergency, other arrangements can be made.
The facility will have clothing, some food, and items such as wheelchairs, canes, and walkers. Most of these items are donated, but some items can be purchased if the need arises. They will not have diapers since so many other organizations are meeting this need.
Volunteers will take in clothing, organize it on racks for display, distribute the clothing along with food and other items as needed. Also a record of what is taken in and distributed will need to be kept. If you think you would be interested in volunteering for this project, call the Salvation Army at 512-754-8541, or go to the office at 300 South C.M. Allen Parkway, Suite 100."
