Thanks to Charles Johnson for the program last week.
Charles Johnson gave our club a very vivid and I would say scary update on the danger involving the Zika mosquito.
The Zika mosquito craves human blood , feeds during the day and lives under beds and inside closets.
Until now, the best weapon against disease-carrying mosquitoes in the United States has been outdoor pesticide fog sprayed by truck and airplane. But health experts fear the typical approach will do little to eradicate the Aedes aegypti mosquito that carries Zika.
Though there could be localized U.S. outbreaks, most likely along the Gulf Coast, federal officials said they hope the wide use of air conditioning, window screens and regular garbage collection will mitigate the risk
The World Health Organization declared the Zika outbreak an International health emergency after evidence linking the virus to microcephaly, a devastating birth defect that can cause unusually small heads and permanent brain damage.
More than 30 people in the United States have been confirmed to have Zika after traveling to an affected country. There has been one report of transmission within the United States, but experts believe that will increase as the weather warms up, the local mosquito population multiplies and many more travelers return to the country.
"All it takes is one of those individuals who arrives back in the United States at the stage where they have virus in their blood, says Scott Weaver, an expert in mosquito borne viral diseases at the University Texas Medical Branch's Galveston National Laboratory. At that point, he said, a single mosquito biting the affected person could spread the disease to others.
Zika thrives in impoverished areas, spreading widely in garbage filled neighborhoods and in homes and apartments with no screens on the windows, .
Charles gave a very graphic presentation, stating that this epidemic could very easily become monumental in the U.S. unless we find a way to combat it before it becomes an epidemic. Thanks Charles for making us all aware of this crisis.

Moe Johnson will be bringing the program to our club this coming Thursday. Her name is Ashley Prewitt, connected with the newly constructed Orange Theory Fitness Center.
Orange Theory Fitness, a fast growing group fitness concept that uses 60 minute classes broken into intervals of high-energy training.

Ramp Building Updates....
On March 6th, volunteers from Kiwanis Club of San Marcos and Texas State Young Christians Group finished up a ramp for Cathy Harris. The ramp had to be started on one day and completed on another due to the weather. Once again we want to thank those members of our Kiwanis Club that are giving extra time voluntarily to make it easier for handicapped persons to live a more productive life.
Those from our club who build this ramp for Ms Harris were Gary Strunk, Gary Nelson, Lucky Bovo and Bill Stich.
TX/OK Governor Visits Region Ten
On February 11, 2017 Region Ten (Divisions 23, 24,& 38) conducted our annual Governor's visit at First United Methodist Church, Round Rock, TX. There was a significant increase in
Attendance this year with 44 members attending. A very informative Program was led by Region Ten's Trustee, John Clifford. Francine Eikner presented a very, very personal testimony about her relationship with the Eliminate Project. Our own Frederick Case's presentation followed with sharing his experiences on the value of a membership committee in helping our Clubs grow. Next was a presentation by our Governor-Elect Patrick Shibi's discussion of "The I-Plan"
The afternoon sessions consisted of Governor John Sheridan's emphasis on 'Strengthening our Club's Future' as his keynote theme. The meeting was concluded by a round table led by Trustee John Clifford and Lt. Gov. John Polk, Division 38, highlighting major accomplishments of those clubs that were in attendance.

After first trying to defend himself against the murderous onslaught, Caesar saw Brutus with a knife and asked "Et tu, Brute?" (You too Brutus?) Caesar then gave up the struggle and was stabbed to death.
March 16, 1968 - - During the Vietnam War, the My Lai Massacre occurred as American soldiers of Charlie Company murdered 504 Vietnamese men, women and children. Twenty-five U.S. Army officers were later charged with complicity in the massacre and subsequent cover-up, but only one was convicted, and later pardoned by President Richard Nixon.

"Monahans Sandhill State Park, Texas.
Monahans Sandhill State Park is noted for the presence of sand dunes up to 70 feet high. Although desert-like, the Monahans Sandhills are not a desert; they are a part of a semi-arid ecosystem characterized by the presence of both groundwater and relatively nutrient-poor windblown sand. The Shinoak is a local climax shrub, an unusual type of oak tree which because of local conditions often achieves full growth of only 4 feet in height. Most of a Shinoak's biomass exists in the form of a lengthy root system reaching down to groundwater. If a Monahans sand dune has become stabilized and has stopped blowing about in the wind, that is often because a small grove of Shinoaks have stabilized the dune with their extensive root systems. Despite the sterility of the landscape, various rodents are relatively common, and several packs of Sandhills coyotes feed upon them.
The Monahans Sandhills consist of sand deposits 70 miles long and 20 miles wide from Crane County, Texas to Andrews County, Texas. The sand probably reached its greatest areal extent in the Late Pleistocene, 16,000 years before the present, with an earlier period of dune building 25,000 years before the present. The dunes consist of almost pure quartz grains with an average diameter of less than 0.22 mm.
