"To go to destruction; go to pot; go haywire; go to the dogs. In the sixteenth century, and later, men spelled by ear, rather than through knowledge of the historical background of words. In fact, many of our present-day spellings are still affected by that custom. Rack, in this phrase, is one of them. It should have been, and should now be, wrack, which in turn was another spelling of wreck and with the same meaning. But we have had 'rack and ruin' almost four hundred years and in the works of the best writers, even to the present day, and a change would be a slow process."

December 21, - - Winter begins in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere today is the beginning of summer.

December 22, 1912 - - "Lady Bird" Johnson was born in Karnack, Texas (as Claudia Alta Taylor). She was beside her husband Lyndon Johnson on board Air Force One when he was sworn in as the 36th U.S. President following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. She proved to be a gracious First Lady. remembered for her anti-litter campaign, asking citizens to help 'Beautify America'

December 23, 1987 - - Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager set a new world record of 216 hours of continuous flight around the world without refueling. Their aircraft Voyager traveled 24,986 miles at a speed of about 115 miles per hour.

December 24, 1992 - - Caspar Weinberger and five other Reagan aides involved in the Iran-Contra scandal were pardoned by President George Bush.

December 25, - - Christmas Day, commemorating the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. Although the exact date of his birth is not known, it has been celebrated on December 25th by the Western (Roman Catholic) Church since 336 A.D.

December 26, 2004 - - An estimated 230,000 persons were killed and 1.5 million left homeless when a magnitude 9.3 earthquake on the seafloor of the Indian Ocean set off a series of giant tsunami waves that smashed into the shorelines of a dozen countries including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India and Somalia.

December 27, 1831 - - Charles Darwin set out from Plymouth, England, aboard the ship HMS Beagle on his five-year global scientific expedition. Darwin collected fossils and studied plants and animals, gradually beginning to doubt that many diverse species of living things had sprung into existence at one moment (creationism). In 1859, he published 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.

"A couple of extras in the play were talking backstage at the end of the performance. 'What's the matter with our leading lady?' one actress asked. 'She seems really mad about something.'

'Oh, she's upset because she only received nine bouquets of flowers over the footlights,' the other woman answered.

'Nine!' exclaimed the first actress. 'That's pretty good, isn't it?' 'Yes,' her friend replied, but 'she paid for 10.'"

What About the Indiana State Flag?

The official state flag of Indiana was adopted in 1917. It was designed by Paul Hadley of Mooresville, Indiana; he won a flag design contest sponsored by the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) for Indiana's 100th anniversary of statehood in 1916. There are 19 golden stars on a blue field. The thirteen stars in the outer circle represent the 13 original colonies of the United States of America; the 5 stars in a half circle represent the states admitted prior to Indiana (but after the original 13), and the larger star atop the flame of the torch of Liberty represents Indiana.

"A Parting Anecdote"

"When Woodrow Wilson was President of Princeton University he deplored the promiscuous giving of honorary degrees. 'Our universities have learned of late,' he said, 'to distribute honorary degrees judiciously. But in the past-----well, in the past I met an uncouth person at a dinner, and, being told by an acquaintance that he had three degrees, I asked why it was. 'Well' said my friend, 'the third was given because he had two, the second because he had one, and the first because he had none.'"
