 Just a reminder to all veterans (it doesn't matter which branch of service or what time frame you served), to attend the special 
celebration which Doris Miller Middle School is planning for all veterans to attend on November 11th beginning at 9:30am. If you haven't let Chad Burns know or the school itself, please do. This is a very proud time, not only for veterans, but also for the generations that will follow us.

  Now here is the value of having programs every week in our club. McBride Wilson brought a tremendous program last Thursday....Patrolman Donald Lee and his wife, Pam. Donald is one of two K-9 Dog handlers with our San Marcos Police Department. Donald brought one of his dogs and put on a fantastic demonstration showing how his dogs can zero in on an odor, possibly drugs, and then having such control over the dog, apprehend the offender. Our club was absolutely on the edge of their seats listening to his description of how keen a dog's ability to smell, so acute that even when the scent is mixed in with other scents, they can single out the odor they have been trained to look forward and ignore the other odors. It was truly an impressive program. Their dogs are trained to restrain an offender passively, to include biting and hanging on until the offender is apprehended. Thank you McBride and thank you Donald for sharing this with our club. Even though there are only two K-9 handlers, they are very qualified and on call 24-7 if the need arises.

WHAT WOULD OUR LIFESTYLE BE WITHOUT A DENTIST? 
We will be having Dr. Corey Carothers, D.D.S. as our program. The subject....Fluoride, only from the standpoint of the dental perspective.
Perhaps Dr. Carothers is your dentist, he is mine, and to me, he is a good one. John Polk was going to be bringing this program, but unfortunately, he is recuperating from hip surgery, so Del Brown will be introducing Dr. Carothers.
Dr. Carothers grew up in Corpus Christi, TX. After high school, he attended Texas A&M University and graduated in 2002 with a degree in Biomedical Science. Dr. Carothers received his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 2006 from University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where he received the Clinical Excellence Award.
Following graduation from dental school, Dr. Carothers was accepted to a post-doctoral residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, TX. His advanced training had a strong clinical focus in aesthetics, dental materials, treatment planning and the clinical applications dealing with the medically compromised patient. Additionally, he holds a certification in Enteral Sedation.
Dr. Carothers is an active member of the Academy of General Dentistry, American Dental Association. the Texas Dental Association, San Marcos Chamber of
Commerce and is currently an officer in the River District Dental Society.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Catherine, (who is also a dentist), their little girl Cate, their son, Christopher, and doing anything that involves the outdoors. Let's have a great showing this coming Thursday, October 22.

.jpg) SPECIAL TOUR OF THE H.E.B. DISTRIBUTION CENTER
When Adam Olsen came to our club meeting and gave us a wonderful presentation on the HEB Distribution Center, said he would be glad to set up a tour of the Distribution Center sometime around this time. There is a tour being set up this coming week....OCTOBER 20TH, Tuesday from 9 - 11am. All Kiwanis members and wives and other interested persons are to meet at Dick's Classic Garage on Hunter Road at 8:20am. We will leave from there to where the tour begins. Thanks to Doug Balkman for setting this up.

John Polk went in for surgery on his hip (third time), Monday morning, October 19th. He is in St. David's hospital and probably will be there for about 3 days. Let's pray for a grand slam successful surgery.

 It's always a great moment in anyone's life when they can move up to new responsibilities and provide a greater span of leadership. This has happened to our own Rob Martin. Rob has been officially inducted into the leadership role of Trustee over three regions of Kiwanian clubs. Congrats. Rob. You will do a wonderful job. |

 We had a Board meeting last Thursday, and our President Moe brought up the subject of things relating to "40", so I decided to investigate and here are a few things I found out about "40". Bear with me!
1. -40 is the unique temperature at which the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales correspond.
2. In horse racing, the maximum permitted number of runners in the grand national is 40.
3. In ancient Israel 40 lashes is one of the punishments meted out by the Sanhedrin, though in actual practice only 39 lashes were administered.
4. 40 is the atomic number for zirconium.
5. The planet Venus forms a pentagram in the night sky every eight years with it returning to is original point every 40 years with a 40 day regression.
6. The Hebrew people lived in the Sinai desert for 40 years.
7. 40 is the number of spaces in a standard Monopoly game board.
8. Ronald Reagan was the 40th president.
9. 40 is the highest number ever counted to on Sesame Street.
10. In tennis, the number 40 represents the third point gained in a game.

  FOR ANYONE THAT HAS EVER EXPERIENCED THIS ON AN AIRPLANE
"Hi! My name is Gertrude, " said the lady next to this man on the airplane. "It's so nice to meet you! I'm flying to New York for my grandson's third birthday. I'm so excited! I remember when he was just a little thumbkin and now he's already three! It's really hard to believe. He's the most adorable thing you've ever seen! You know what? Hold on, I think I might have a picture on me. Let me take a look in my purse, yes, here it is, just look at him, isn't he adorable. Do you see his dimple on his left cheek" Simply adorable! I could stare at his picture all day.
Oh my, and you should hear him on the phone! He is just the cutest, he says to me in the cutest voice "Hi Grandma!" It just gets me all teary eyed."
After what seemed like two hours for the poor man sitting next to her. Gertrude seemed to realize that perhaps she was talking a bit too much. "You know, I feel terrible! Here I am just talking and talking without letting you get in a word edgewise!

HISTORICAL FACTS DURING THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 16 - 22
1.October 16th, 1793.......Queen Marie Antoinette was beheaded during the Reign of Terror following the French Revolution. She was the wife of King Louis XVI and had become the symbol of the people's hatred for the old regime due to her extravagance and frivolity. According to legend, she responded, "Let them eat cake," when told poor people had no bread.
October 17,1944 ......The Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle in history, took place off the Phillipine Islands, during World War II in the Pacific. The battle involved 216 U.S. warships and 64 Japanese ships and resulted in the destruction of the Japanese Navy, including the Japanese Battleship Musashi, one of the largest ever built.
October 18, 1945.......The Nuremburg War Crimes Trail began with indictments against 24 former Nazi leaders, including Hermann Goering and Albert Speer. The trail lasted 10 months, with delivery of the judgment completed on October 1, 1946. Twelve Nazis were sentenced to death by hanging, three to life imprisonment, four to lesser prison terms, and three were acquitted.
October 19, 1987....."Black Monday" occurred on Wall Street as stocks plunged a record 508 points or 22.6 per cent, the largest one-day drop in stock market history.
October 20, 1973.......The "Saturday Night Massacre" occurred during the Watergate scandal as President Richard M. Nixon fired Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox and Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus. Attorney General Elliot Richardson resigned. A firestorm of political protest erupted over the firings leading to widespread demands for Nixon's impeachment.
October 21, 1879......Thomas Edison successfully tested an electric incandescent lamp with a carbonized filament at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, keeping it lit for over 13 hours.
October 22, 1962........President John F. Kennedy appeared on television to inform Americans of the existence of Russian missiles in Cuba. The President demanded their removal and announced a naval "quarantine" of Cuba. Six days later, the Russians announced they would remove the weapons. In return, the U.S. later removed missiles from Turkey.
