John Wilbur Hopson, age 97, of San Marcos, Texasw, passed away on Friday, January 16, 2015.
Visitation will be Pennington Funeral Home, 6:00P.M. to 8:00PM, Thursday, January 22, 2015. Funeral services to be held 10:00 AM, Friday,
January 23, 2015 at the First United methodist Church of San Marcos. Burial to be held 12:30PM at the San Marcos City Cemetery, San Marcos, Texas. As many members of our club are encouraged to attend the services.

 Wow! Happy Dollars were flowing last Thursday. It's good to be grateful and express it by offering Happy Dollars. Remember none of the Happy Dollars stay with the club, they go directly to the Eliminate Project. One happy guy was Rob Martin, who just went through some serious heart surgery, but you can't keep a good man down. He was at club meeting last Thursday and was so happy he gave a personal check of $50.00 to the Eliminate Project. Whooooeeee!!!! Rob, glad you are on the mend. |

Thanks Lon Shell and John Polk for bringing a program last Thursday stressing that all clubs in Kiwanis are supposed to undergo each year, and that is "Youth Protection Guidelines. " John did a great job of stressing the importance of this for every Kiwanian who has any connection with children and youth. Some of the areas John touched on were what it means to be a chaperone, the importance of everyone to have a Criminal History Background Check, what are the guidelines regarding overnight stays, transportation of children & youth, the importance of knowing about dispensing medication, Use of Alcoholic beverages and Tobacco, when to report an incident involving children & youth, be sensible when it comes to using the social media. There are definitive policies and guidelines that are applicable to all Kiwanians, and these policies can be found in Kiwanis Internation Policies and Procedures as Procedure #432.

PANCAKE COMMITTEE MEETING
Pancake Day and Silent Auction is a little over a month away. It's not too late to get our committee together. Tickets have been handed out, Flyers have been made up, Silent Auction Letters and Forms have been made available. All we have to do is get out there and contact those you did last year and any new ones that you can think of. We are going to have a Committee Meeting of both the Pancake Day and The silent Auction this coming W
ednesday, January 21st at the office of Dr. Geibel, 5:00pm, in the office of Dr. Geibel, 2003 Medical Parkway, Suite A in San Marcos. Those commitee members for the Pancake Day are Doug Balkman, Kelli Whigham, Gary Nelson, Beverly Crumley, Lon Shell; and those for the Silent Auction are: Kelli Whigham and Pam Cook, Veronique Hahn, Gary Strunk, Beverly Crumley and David Chandler. We'll try to keep it short.

 Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Hear Ye!......We are looking for someone that would like to do a very special job....that is to write articles about what our club is doing in the community. We have many activities that involve the community, but we don't seem to be able to get what we are doing in the newspaper. We need more visibility. We need someone who can feed news releases on an occasional basis to our local media as to what we are doing. For example, we have Pancake Day coming up on Feb 26, followed by Moe's Better half Marathon. These need to be put in the paper. Do you like to write? We can use you. If you are a member already, great! If you are not a member, we invite you to attend one of our noon meetings at Grin's Restaurant, 12:00pm, every Thursday, and get acquainted. We are a great bunch of people. |

  We've been hearing a lot about Maternal & Neonatal Tetanus and how it is a cruel killer. It marks an infected baby's short life with excruciating pain, preventing even the comfort of a mother's touch. The Kiwanis family has partnered with UNICEF to eliminate this highly preventable disease. It's an ambitious goal, but it is achievable. Here are some familiar facts: 1 baby dies every 9 minutes from tetanus....MNT has been eliminated from more than 30 countries since 2000.....US$1.80 protects 1 woman and her future babies.....A series of 3 doses of tetanus vaccine=immunity from tetanus. Our club has done very well in doing it's share, what with personal donations, fundraising portions, club treasury, matching gifts from foundation, or gifts from businesses. But what we are asking of you this coming Thursday, January 22, at our noon meeting is to vote on whether our club is willing to go a step further, and become a Model Club, by our club as a whole, either personally or collectively, take personal ownership in seriously to do our best in eliminating this dreaded disease. More will be discussed this Thursday.....please as many of our members as can be, please attend this meeting this Thursday. A video will be shown, questions will be answered and then you will have an opportunity to vote on whether our club wants to be a Model Club and seriously help to rid our world of MNT. |

 We had a good Board Meeting last Thursday evening at CTMC. One of the actions that came out was a project which Moe Johnson was working on, and that was to provide identification banners to place on our flags, so that the public will be able to tell who is furnishing the flags that we put up throughout the year. They will be made of vinyl, and will be 9"wide X 4" tall. The board approved the expenditure and authorized Moe to go ahead and procure them. Here is a picture of what they will look like. SOME MORE TRIVIA FROM YEARS PAST....When a group really believes in an idea, it is only natural that they like to share it with other individuals and with other communities. Thus it was that the San Marcos Club, during Dr. Joe Wilson's administration, took the initiative
in organizing and sponsoring the Seguin Kiwanis Club in 1956. Again in 1971, when it became clear that there was room for another club in the city, and many individuals whose duties kept them from attending a luncheon club, our club, under the leadership of Dr. Vernon Lunch, sponsored the Balcones Kiwanis Club, which is a breakfast club. We have also taken an interest in supporting other new and struggling clubs, even though we were not their sponsors........
