Well, we had a winner last Thursday in our Big Bucks drawing. Del Brown turned his back on the jar and drew out....Glen Rydl's name....Yaayyy! There was $8.00 and Glen gave it all to Eliminate.

   Didn't Andrew Gary do a magnificent job with his program last Thursday. You can tell by the looks on our member's face that what he was bringing to the club was information that many of them could easily relate to. Andrew had his facts correct as he led us all into the past and related incidents within our club that he remembered when he came into the club, back in the 70's. At that time our club had 70 members and he was president in 1978. Looking back through the years, noticing that everyone is getting older, it is important that we hang on to those facts that has made our club what it is today. Not too many of the old timers are still living, but the ones that are, like Wallace Dockall, Handler Smith, Vernon Lynch, Charles Ramsey and maybe a few others. Some of our members have been presidents several times like Andrew (1978 &2001)Moe Johnson (1982 & 2003) and he is President Elect for next year. Randy Cook (1984 & 2002), Lon Shell (1987 & 2004), Peggy Brunner was the first female president in our club (1992), Glen Rydl who was president in the Balcones morning club, but also was president of our noon club in 2009. Several club members who have been president have also gone on to become Lt. Governors - (Moe Johnson, Charles Johnson, Frederick Case, Glen Rydl (Balcones), John Polk who was president several times in the Balcones club and went on to be Lt. Gov, but he was never president of the noon club, and is currently our very efficient secretary. Rob Martin who was president in 2012, went on to be Lt Governor in 2013 & 2014. He is currently our Division 38 Lt. Governor. The past is not something to forget, but to remember. Thank you Andrew for your program. |

 Our program this coming Thursday, March 26 will be brought by Ted. Breihan. He is bringing Kirby Stewart,, who is the Nutritional and food Coordinator for the Hays County Food Bank. 
Kerby has her degree from Texas State in Nutrition and Foods and Mass Communication. She is also one of the Community Garden Managers at the San Marcos Community Garden. In addition, she is the Chair of the City of San Marcos Healthy City Task Force.
The Food Bank is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides food and grocery items to individuals, families and more that 40 partner agencies througout the county at no cost. As Kirby tells us, "The majority of what we give out is fresh." In Hays County, 24,790 residents face "food insecurity," meaning they do not have access to affordable and nutritious meals. According to Matt Barnes founder of a program called "Adopt-a-Farm", "I saw there was a need for more healthy food to be given...what better source than natural, local farms and gardens." Ms Stewart says the food bank serves over 4,000 people per month. About 20 pounds of food are provided per family twice a week. Every customer receives meat, bread, produce and a dessert. None of the items are canned." This program promises to be one of great interest. Let's have a great turnout. Invite your friends.

 A REAL ELIMINATE BOOST FROM THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. Last month, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and philanthropist Bill Gates led a meeting in Ottawa, Canada. Kiwanis International President Dr. John Button and UNICEF Canada President and CEO David Morley participated in the discussion. The topic was the health of mothers and children in developing nations
The discussion yielded a big result: the Canadian government will give to the Eliminate Project by matching every dollar (up to CAD $2.5 million) raised by UNICEF Canada and Kiwanis Canada. That's essentially a CAD$5 million commitment over the next two years. This makes Canada the largest government donor to The Eliminate Project.
"Canada's announcement is an unprecedent government commitment to join with Kiwanis and UNICEF to rid the world of maternal and neonatal tetanus," says Button.
Canada's commitment will support UNICEF Canada and Kiwanis Canada as they work to eliminate MNT in Chad, Kenya, Pakistan, Sudan, and South Sudan. In fact Morley says, it will save countless newborn babies.
"We're on the brink of eliminating this childhood killer," he adds, "and this funding is a critical step in making elimination a reality for five countries."

 IN CAMBODIA, KIWANIANS SEE IMPACT IN ACTION In February, a joint delegation from Kiwanis International and the U.F. Fund for UNICEF traveled to Cambodia for a memorable opportunity to see the Eliminate Project in action
The team observed UNICEF activities related to immunization and education - from the inspection of health facilities to the training that local health workers give to community leaders, volunteers, traditional midwives and mothers. Overall, the experience provided a fuller understanding of the progress the Kiwanis family is helping to make.
"Although I expected this trip to be about vaccinations, it was so much more," says Amy Zimmerman, Ohio District governor-elect and mult-division coordinator. "It was education in action from the very start to the very end."
In Cambodia, pronounced inequities have inhibited UNICEF;s efforts in many rural areas. However, education has played a key role in overcoming those obstacles and bringing measurable progress to the Southeast Asian country.
Our team left feeling very optimistic about the future for moms and babies in Cambodiea. "We can see that our work truly is changing how Cambodians live," says Maria Palazzolo, president of Key Club International. "I will never forget how this trip changed my outlook on life and happiness."
Cambodia hopes to declare victory over the disease later this year when it completes an MNT elimination validation survey.
